Department of Education in Science and Mathematics Department of Education in Science and Mathematics carries out research, development, training, evaluation and extension activities in Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education from the upper primary to the higher secondary stage. It is involved in the development of supplementary and complimentary teaching-learning materials in Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education for upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. The main functions of the Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM) are to undertake research, development, training, evaluation and extension activities related to Science, Mathematics and environmental education especially for the upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. A significant area of the department s work has been development of syllabi, textbooks and other instructional materials in Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education. The Instructional Material Centre (IMC) of the department undertakes collection and dissemination of information on all aspects of Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education. The other major extension activities of the department include organisation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition, promotion of state level Science Exhibitions, designing and development of Science and Mathematics laboratories and the science park and publication of a quarterly journal School Science. In order to strengthen Science and Mathematics education in the States and UTs, the department organises orientation programmes for teachers and master trainers. To facilitate quality of pupil evaluation in schools the department has also developed exemplar problems in Science and Mathematics. The department has also been engaged in the development of instructional materials for popularisation of science, promotion of innovative laboratory practices in Science and Mathematics and organisation of out of school activities in Science. Every year, the department organises the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC), which is the culmination of the series of Science exhibitions for children, organised at district, zonal and state levels. 2 Major Activities of the Department during RESEARCH The department carried out two research projects A Study on Classroom Transactions at Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages in the light of NCF-2005 and Improvisation and Development of the Laboratory Techniques in Biology for Higher Secondary Stage. NCERT DEVELOPMENT Based on the new textbooks, exemplar problems in Science and Mathematics for Class X and in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics for Class XII have been developed. Book of Exemplar Problems in Mathematics at Upper Primary Stage (Class VI) has also been developed. Department has developed Laboratory Manual in Mathematics at Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages. Hindi version of project books on Environmental Education for the Classes VI to X and teachers handbook on Environmental Education for higher secondary stage has been developed. In-service teacher training material through interactive audio-visual presentation in Chemistry for higher secondary stage has also been developed. TRAINING AND EXTENSION A series of face-to-face orientation programmes for teachers and Master Trainers have been organised for Science and Mathematics at upper primary and secondary stages and for Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics for higher secondary stage. Orientation programmes for Master Trainers in laboratory techniques for secondary and higher secondary stages were also conducted. Orientation of trained graduate teachers (TGTs) in Mathematics of CBSE affiliated schools was done through teleconferencing mode. 3 State Level Science Exhibitions (SLSE) The department provided the necessary guidelines for the preparation of exhibits and models and guidelines for organising the State Level Science Exhibitions (SLSE) to all States, UTs and other school systems. These exhibitions form the first phase of preparation for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children. The main theme for SLSE, has been Science and Technology for Global Sustainability. The organisation of science exhibitions at school, district and state level provides opportunities to all students and teachers to ponder over various sub-themes of the exhibition and to present their perceptions and ideas in the form of models and to make use of equipment, devices and techniques available to them as also to improvise them whichever desirable. The guidelines provided by the department enable the students and teachers to generate ideas for developing their exhibits. The identified sub-themes for the preparation of exhibits were Agriculture and Food Security, Harnessing Energy, Conservation of Natural Resources, Combating Climate Changes, Disaster Management and Mathematical Modelling. The NCERT also provided guidelines for evaluation of exhibits besides providing catalytic grant of nearly thirty lakhs to all states and UTs for organising the State Level Science Exhibitions. Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) 2008 The NCERT organised the 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) in collaboration with the Government of Himachal Pradesh at Solan from 25 to 30 November The main theme of JNNSEC-2008 was Science and Technology and Planet Earth. The exhibition was inaugurated by H.E. the Governor of Himachal Pradesh Smt. Prabha Rau on 25 November In her inaugural address the Hon ble Governor highlighted the role of Science Annual Report H.E. the Governor of Himachal Pradesh Smt. 4 and Technology in the development of mankind in the course of evolution of human being, society and culture. She also emphasised the need and relevance of Science and Technology in the development of the nation. The inaugural function was presided over by the Hon ble. Education Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sri Ishwar Dass Dhiman. Dr. O.P.Sharma, Director of Education, Himachal Pradesh, Prof. G. Ravindra, Joint Director, NCERT, Prof. Hukum Singh, Head, DESM, NCERT, Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Coordinator, JNNSEC, and many other dignitaries from the state of Himachal Pradesh addressed the participants. NCERT Hon'ble Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh observing a working model at 35th JNNSEC-08 The booklets titled List of Exhibits and Structure and Working of the Science Models and a publicity folder on the JNNSEC-2008 were distributed among the participants and visitors. Hon ble. Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Rajiv Bindal, presented an educational kit to each participants of the exhibition. Twenty exhibits of the 35 th JNNSEC 2008 were recommended for participation in the Rashtriya Kishore Vaigyanik Sammelan at NEHU, Shillong, which was organised alongwith the 96 th Indian Science Congress 2009 from 03 to 07 January Popularisation of Science Publication of the journal School Science is another on-going activity of the department. Under the project, Centre for Popularisation of Science, different measures have been taken for popularisation of Science amongst children. One of the very important features is the establishment of a Science Park and an Energy Park in the NIE Campus. Several exhibits have been installed in the Science Park. A number of teachers, teacher-educators and students from different schools, colleges visit the science park. They seek guidance for establishing the science parks in their organisations. Some of the schools have already established science parks. 56

5 Cultural performance by participating students at 35th JNNSEC-08 Group Arithmetic Group Arithmetic was constituted by NCERT in September 2007 for initiating steps for the qualitative improvement of teaching and learning of Mathematics at primary level. During the year , Group Arithmetic developed the Teachers Training Manual and Mathematics Kit for Classes I and II alongwith its User s Manual. Contribution of DESM in Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) A research and development programme of SSA Development of Indicators of Learning and Field Trial of Tools for Assessment for Class VIII in Science and Mathematics was completed by the department. The faculty of the department participated in the national workshop on Effective Strategies for Quality Improvement in Science and Mathematics Education at Upper Primary Level organised by MHRD, New Delhi, at Chandigarh from 24 to 26 November Major Contributions of the Faculty Professor Hukum Singh, Head, provided support in the completion of Exemplar Problems in Science and Mathematics for Class X and Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology for Class XII. He was one of the coordinators of the programme for the development of Laboratory Manuals in Mathematics at Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages. He was a member of the project for the development of Exemplar Problems in Mathematics for Class VI. Laboratory Manual in Science for Classes IX and X and Laboratory Manual in Chemistry for Class XI in English and Hindi versions were published under his overall supervision. He was one of the coordinators for organisation of National Conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education and delivered lecture on curriculum development in Mathematics in the conference. He provided guidance for establishment of Mathematics Laboratory in different schools of various states in the country. 6 NCERT at upper primary, secondary and higher secondary stages. He was a panelists in orientation of teachers/teacher-educators of SCERT/SIE s/diets in teaching of Mathematics through video conferencing organised by CIET and IGNOU. He participated in various national seminars, workshops organised by NCERT and other organisations. He also evaluated many theses of different universities for the award of Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. He attended meetings and provided inputs in Science and Mathematics before visiting delegates of different countries in NCERT. He worked as a member of the Committee of Courses for Mathematics and a member of Curriculum Committee of CBSE. He was engaged as a member of various committees constituted by the Council. He worked as a resource person in the national workshop on Effective Strategies for Quality Improvement in Science and Mathematics Education and delivered lecture on Math Lab Activities at upper primary level organised by MHRD from 24 to 26 November 2008 at Chandigarh in collaboration with SSA, Punjab. Professor Jaishree Sharma was looking after the implementation on Environmental Education in schools, as convenor of the Core Group on Environmental Education. She also contributed to the training of resource persons and teachers on How to Impart Environmental Education through Infusion Model as per the NCF The department developed Project Books for Classes VI to X and Teacher s Handbook for Environmental Education at Higher Secondary Stage for implementing the innovative project based syllabus. She presented a paper on Sustainable Development Education in India in the international seminar on Democratic and Secular Education organised at Kerala University from 4 to 6 December She delivered keynote address in the national seminar on Sustainable Development organised by IIPEM Chaudhary Charan Singh University. She helped different organisations for the implementation of Environmental Education. She was also the convenor of Environmental Orientation of School Education, a grants-in-aid programme of Government of India under Quality Improvement in Schools (QIS) Scheme. Professor R.S. Sindhu coordinated the programmes A Study on Classroom Transaction of Science and Mathematics Textbooks at Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages in light of NCF-2005 and Development of Indicators of Learning and Field Trial of Tools for Assessment for Class VIII in Science and Mathematics. He also coordinated a training programme Orientation of Master Trainers in Science for CBSE affiliated Schools and was a panelist in teleconferencing programme Orientation of Teachers of KVS/NVS/CBSE affiliated Schools regarding new textbooks. He worked as a resource person in the national workshop on Efficient Strategies for Quality Improvement in Science and Mathematics Education at Upper Primary Level organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy, MHRD in collaboration with SSA, Punjab at Chandigarh from 24 to 26 November He coordinated the National Conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education organised by the department and presented a paper Research in Science Education Retrospect and Prospect on January Professor B.K. Tripathi coordinated the programme for the development of Exemplar Problems in Biology for Class XII and also the Hindi version of Exemplar Problems in Biology for Class XI. He also contributed for development of Lab Manual in Biology for Classes XI and XII and Exemplar Problems in Science for Class X. He was associated with the training programmes for master trainers in 58

7 Biology at the higher secondary stage and in Science at the secondary stage. He was the coordinator of Science Park under Popularisation of Science. He was a resource person in the master training of teachers from North-Eastern Region and also in the orientation of PGT (Biology) of Army School at New Delhi. He was in the organising team of the National Conference on Assessment and improvement of Science and Mathematics Education held at NCERT and also presented a paper on Curriculum Development in Science. He contributed in the development of a textbook of Science and TLM at Upper Primary Stage developed by SISE, Allahabad, UP. He also contributed in the development of Teacher s Handbook for PGT (Biology), developed by RIE, Bhubaneswar. He chaired a session on Environment Education in the international conference on Environmental Ethics Education s at B.H.U. Varansi on November Dr. V.P. Srivastava, Reader, coordinated the development of Exemplar Problems in Physics for Class XII and Class XI (Hindi version). He coordinated Orientation of Master Trainers in Laboratory Techniques and Practical work in Physics for Higher Secondary Stage for CBSE affiliated schools from 18 to 20 February He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal School Science published by NCERT and the Courses Committee of CBSE for Secondary Science. He was a resource person of the orientation programme for the Physics teachers of primary schools organised at New Delhi from 14 to 16 June He published a paper communicating Science through Graphs, School Science Vol. 46 (2008). He presented two papers one on Practiced Work in School Science-Issues and Concerns and the other on Virtual Academy in the National Conference on Assessment and Improvement in Science and Mathematics Education held at NIE, New Delhi, on January Dr. R.P. Maurya, Reader, published a paper Student s Evaluation in Mathematics at Secondary Stage, School Science, Vol.46, No.3, September He presented a paper A Mathematical Model of Curriculum in Mathematics at Pre-ICM (International Congress of Mathematicians), International Convention on Mathematical Sciences, Department of Mathematics, University of Delhi, from 18 to 20 December He also presented a paper Issues and Concerns in Mathematics Education in the national conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education held at NIE, New Delhi, on January He coordinated the development of Exemplar Problems in Mathematics for Class IX published by NCERT, New Delhi, September He also coordinated the programmes for developing Exemplar Problems in Mathematics for Class IX (Hindi version) and Class X, and Laboratory Manual in Mathematics at Secondary Stage. Dr. V.P. Singh, Reader, coordinated the programme Development of Exemplar Problems in Mathematics for Class XII and Development of Laboratory Manual in Mathematics at Higher Secondary Stage. He was a resource person in the training programme for PGT in Mathematics through teleconferencing organised by CIET, teacher s training programme for TGT s in Mathematics organised by Army Welfare Education Society, New Delhi, orientation programme on the use of Mathematics textbooks Class VIII organised at RIE, Bhubaneswar, orientation programme for PGT s in Mathematics belonging to SC/ST category organised by the department held at SISE, Allahabad, UP and teacher s training programme held at NERIE, Shillong. He reviewed few articles for publication in the journal of School Science and was a member of the editorial team. He was also nominated Annual Report

8 NCERT by MHRD as an expert for the selection of teachers for the national award-2008 organised by Atomic Energy Society, Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai. He presented a paper on Mathematics Education in the National Conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics held at NIE, New Delhi. He reviewed the materials concerning Mathematics textbooks for Classes VI, VII and VIII and also edited the Teacher s Training Module developed by SISE, Allahabad, UP. Dr. Dinesh Kumar, Reader, coordinated the organisation of the 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC)-2008 held at Solan in collaboration with the Government of Himachal Pradesh. He also coordinated the programme Development of Laboratory Manual in Biology for Higher Secondary Stage (Hindi Version). In the research programme Improvisation and Development of Laboratory Techniques in Biology for Higher Secondary Stage he coordinated the laboratory activities related to Biology for bringing innovations in a number of experiments and practicals. Dr. Gagan Gupta, Reader, coordinated the programme Development of Content Enrichment Material in the Emerging Areas of Physics at the Higher Secondary Stage and Training of Physics Teachers of SC and ST category/schools at Higher Secondary Stage. He was a panelist in teleconferencing and also a resource person in several orientation programmes for teachers and master trainers on the use of textbooks and laboratory manuals of secondary science and higher secondary Physics organised by NCERT and by outside agencies. He contributed in the preparation of modules for teacher training, development of exemplar problems, development of laboratory manuals, popularisation of Science materials and organisation of National Conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education and also for the study on Classroom Transactions of Science and Mathematics Textbooks at Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages in the light of NCF Dr. Alka Mehrotra, Reader, coordinated the programme for the development of Exemplar Problems in Chemistry for Class XII based on NCF-2005 and development of in-service teacher training material through interactive audiovisual presentations in Chemistry for Higher Secondary Stage. She was a team member of the projects Development of Exemplar Problems in Science for Class X based on NCF-2005, Development of Hindi Version of Exemplar Problems in Chemistry for Class XI based on NCF-2005 and Orientation of Master Trainers in Laboratory Techniques and Practical Work Activities in Science at Secondary Stage for CBSE affiliated Schools. She coordinated the Orientation of Master Trainers in Laboratory Techniques and Practical Work in Chemistry at Higher Secondary Stage for CBSE affiliated Schools. She also contributed to the organisation of 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) She was a resource person in the orientation programme for PGTs (Chemistry) organised by AWES from 20 to 22 June 2008 in the Army Public School, New Delhi. She was one of the experts for the judgment of poster entries in the national seminar on Chemistry Education and Research in 21 st Century organised by Dayal Singh College, New Delhi, on 5-6 February She was also involved in the preparation of new re-conceptualised draft syllabus of Pedagogy Course in Science to be taught in two-year B.Ed. course designed for the Regional Institutes of Education, NCERT. Dr. A.K. Wazalwar, Reader, coordinated the programmes Development of Exemplar Problem Book in Mathematics for Class VI, English and Hindi versions 60

9 and Orientation Programme for Master Trainers in Mathematics for CBSE affiliated schools at Upper Primary Stage held at DESM, NCERT from 2 to 6 June He was a panelist for the teleconferencing programmes for the Mathematics teachers at upper primary stage regarding the Class VIII Mathematics textbook and Science and Mathematics through the Gender Lens organised by DWS at NIE, New Delhi, on 4 August He contributed in the development of Teacher s Manual prepared by Arithmetic Group in DESM. He was involved in the development of the Mathematics Kit for Upper Primary Stage prepared by NIE,Workshop, NCERT. He was the principal investigator of the research project Study on Classroom Transaction of Science and Mathematics Textbooks at Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages in light of NCF He was also involved in the project Development of Indicators of Learning and Field Trial of Tools of Assessment of Class VIII in Science and Mathematics. Shri R. Joshi, Senior Lecturer coordinated School Science A quarterly journal. As the Executive Editor of the journal, he was involved in editing of articles and contributed towards the regular feature Science News for all the issues of the journal. He was also assigned the editing and finalisation of the manuscript of the Laboratory Manual in Physics, English and Hindi for Class XI. He was a member of the Core Group for implementation and monitoring for implementation of Environmental Education. He monitored the implementation of Environmental Education in the schools of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. He was involved in the development of manuscripts and editing of five Project Books on Environmental Education, one each for Classes VI to X, and the Handbook for the Teachers of Higher Secondary Stage on Environmental Education. As a member of the teams for the development of Exemplar Problems in Science for Class X and in Physics for Class XII, he contributed in development of new problems and also in their refinement. He contributed as a member in organising 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) 2008 held at Solan (Himachal Pradesh). He was a resource person in the orientation programmes for the master trainers in Science for Class VIII. Ms. Anjni Koul, Senior Lecturer, was a resource person in Science for Central Tibetan Schools Administration, MHRD, organised by Curriculum Group on 29 May She was an expert in the programmes: EDUSAT facilitated Orientation of Practicing School Teachers on Gender Issues in Curricular Areas with reference to NCF-2005 organised by DWS on 4 August 2008; Training Programme in Educational Evaluation for State Boards Academic Officers organised by DEME and Orientation of Master Trainers in Laboratory Techniques and Practical Activities in Science and Secondary Stage for CBSE affiliated Schools from 5 to 7 January 2009 and for higher secondary Chemistry teachers from 10 to 20 March She is a member coordinator for the Development of Exemplar Problems in Science for Classes IX and X. she was a member of the programmes Development of Exemplar Problems in Chemistry for Classes XI and XII and Preparation of Course Book for Bridge Course for KGBV Girls and Training Package based on NCERT Textbooks, organised by DWS. She was involved in preparation of Laboratory Manual in Physics for Class XII, reformulation of Pedagogy of Science Education courses for M.Ed. syllabus and re-conceptualisation of Pedagogy of Science Education Courses for B.Ed. two-years of RIEs, development of content enrichment materials in the emerging areas of Physics at Higher Secondary Stage, development of materials for bridge course and teachers training package for Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas organised by DWS. She contributed in the development of Exemplar Problems in Physics for Class XII based on NCF-2005, development of indicators of learning and field trial of tools of Assessment of Class VII in Science and Mathematics. She was a resource person for the Orientation of Master Trainers in Laboratory Techniques and Practical Work in Physics at Secondary Stage and Higher Secondary Stage for CBSE affiliated schools. She was a team member of 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition for Children, a research programme A Study of Classroom Transactions of Science and Mathematics at Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Stages in the light of NCF- 2005, and the review team for finalisation of Science Textbooks at Upper Primary Stage (Classes VI, VII, VIII) for Uttar Pradesh. She presented a paper Curricular Changes and School Based Evaluation in National Conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education. Dr. Praveen Kumar Chaurasia, Lecturer, was the Mathematics coordinator for the development of customised teacher s training package for KGBV teachers and bridge course for KGBV students organised by DWS. He also contributed as a team member for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) He coordinated Orientation of TGTs (Mathematics) at Upper Primary Stage through Tele-conferencing. He published a paper Derived Space of L p (G.H) in Analysis Mathematics, Volume 35, Number 1, March He co-coordinated and edited the Special Issue of Bhartiya Adhunik Shiksha, January 2009 issue as Mathematics Special Edition. He also wrote an article Engineering in Mathematics Education Mathematical Engineering in this issue. He was a member for the development of Exemplar Problems in Mathematics for Class XII and Laboratory Manual of Mathematics at Higher Secondary Stage. He also contributed in the finalisation and designing of new two-year B.Ed syllabus under the reflection and reforms proposed under NCF 2005, especially twoyear B.Ed. courses Pedagogy Courses in Mathematics. He was a panelist in the Session Virtual Academy: A New Learning Environment for Science and Mathematics of the national conference on Assessment and Improvement of Science and Mathematics Education. He also contributed in the preparation of the Dictionary of Pedagogy developed by the Curriculum Group. He was a panelist of the tele-conferencing programme for the Mathematics teachers at Upper Primary Stage, for Class VIII Mathematics Textbook, held at NIE, New Delhi, from 7 to 28 July He was a resource person in Orientation of Teachers of Mathematics at Higher Secondary Stage in CBSE and State Board affiliated schools conducted by CIET from 11 to 26 February He contributed in the development of Teacher s Manual prepared by Group Arithmetic in DESM. He was involved in the development of Mathematics Kit for Upper Primary Stage prepared by NIE, Workshop. He was also involved in the project Development of Indicators of Learning and Field Trial of Tools of Assessment of Class VIII in Science and Mathematics. Dr. C.V. Shimray, Lecturer, coordinated for the development of Teacher s Handbook on Environmental Education for the Higher Secondary Stage as per 62

11 NCF-2005 (Hindi version) and the development of Project Books on Environmental Education for Classes VI to X (Hindi version). She coordinated and delivered lectures in the programme Orientation of Master Trainers in Biology belonging to ST category from the North Eastern Region for the Higher Secondary Stage held at Manipur University from 2 to 4 March She was a panelist in the orientation of teachers of KVS, NVS, CBSE affiliated schools in new textbooks developed by NCERT for Class VIII Science through teleconferencing. She was also member of the development team for the preparation of Bridge Course for KGBV Girls and Teacher Training Package based on NCERT Textbooks. She coordinated in the Development of Indicators of Learning and Field Trial of Tools for Assessment of Class VIII in Science. As a member of the team for monitoring the implementation of Environmental Education in schools as per the Hon ble. Supreme Court s Order, she assessed the status in Udaipur, (Rajasthan) and Agartala (Tripura). She contributed as a member in organising 35 th Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children (JNNSEC) 2008 held at Solan. She delivered a lecture on Environment and Curriculum in the National Conference for Environment Educators organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) from 13 to 15 November Ms. S.L. Varte, Lecturer, coordinated two orientation programmes for master trainers on Laboratory Techniques and Practical Work in Biology at the Higher Secondary Stage. One of the programmes was for Delhi-NCR region and the other for North-East India. She was also a member of the development team of Exemplar Problems in Biology for Class XII. She was involved in research programmes Study of Classroom Transactions in Science and Mathematics at the Upper Primary and Secondary Stage and Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths at the higher secondary stage.
