Skills Builder 1 Course in Science Course overview A course designed for students at the start of their KS3 studies, or for students hoping to access KS4 courses who have missed significant parts of their KS3 entitlement and need grounding in basic scientific concepts and content. A one year course Designed to introduce all the major content areas within the KS3 Science National Curriculum Allows students to progress to Science Skill Builder 2 if they remain with A21, or to progress to mainstream pre-gcse courses Also suitable for students who have missed most of their KS3 schooling and need grounding in basic ideas before moving on to GCSE courses targeted at grades 1-4 Biology, Chemistry and Physics units distributed throughout the year Emphasis on concepts and factual knowledge. Course content BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY PHYSICS Cells and bodies Reproduction Health and lifestyle Ecosystem processes Adaptation and inheritance Particles Elements reacting Acids, alkalis and metals Separation techniques Earth and complex materials Forces and space Sound and light Electricity and magnetism Energy Motion and pressure Assessment procedures Each unit is assessed using examination-style questions within class and in activities, and progress is reported with A21 levels, which can be translated to GCSE grade equivalent levels. 2

Skills Builder 2 Course in Science Course overview A course designed for students preparing to access KS4 courses, who have had some science education at KS3 but who need to consolidate learning before moving to examination pathways. A one year course Revisits the major content areas within the KS3 Science National Curriculum in sufficient depth and detail for students aiming to move on to GCSEs in science Prepares students for access to GCSE courses either with A21 or in mainstream provision Biology, Chemistry and Physics units distributed throughout the year Concepts and factual knowledge revisited from Skill Builder 1 in greater depth Development of the scientific skills of analysis, communication, enquiry and problem-solving embedded throughout the curriculum content. Course content BIOLOGY CHEMISTRY PHYSICS Cells and bodies Health and lifestyle Ecosystem processes Adaptation and inheritance Particles Elements reacting Acids, alkalis and metals Earth and complex materials Forces and space Sound and light Electricity and magnetism Energy Assessment procedures Each unit is assessed using examination-style questions within class and in activities, and progress is reported with A21 levels, which can be translated to GCSE grade equivalent levels. 3

GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy ( 8464) Two year course to deliver the full GCSE Dual Award curriculum The course is taught over two years, but timetabled to allow students in Year 11 who would benefit from covering Year 10 topics to attend both Y10 and Y11 sessions each day Delivered in separate Higher and Foundation tier courses and classes F tier provides access for grades 2-5 H tier provides access for grades 5-9 Required practical activities are embedded within the course and delivered via video, simulations, detailed study of methods and results analysis, complemented by practice examination material from courses which have previously assessed practical work in this way Fully accredited to receive DfE funding through Section 96 Ofqual approved and eligible for inclusion in school performance tables. Course overview and content The course prepares students for examinations in Combined Science at the end of Year 11. The course content will cover the following areas: YEAR 10 YEAR 11 4

Atoms and the Periodic Table Cell Biology Particle Model Bonding, Structure and the Properties of Matter Organisation Energy Chemical Changes Infection and Response Electricity Energy Changes Bioenergetics Atomic Structure Homeostasis and Response Forces Rate and Extent of Chemical Change Inheritance, Variation and Evolution Organic Chemistry Waves Ecology Analysis and Environmental Chemistry Magnetism and Electromagnetism Revision and Exam Preparation Assessment Regular review and assessment material throughout the course will allow for effective tracking of pupil progress supporting students in developing effective revision and exam technique. Examination procedures Assessment is entirely by written exam at the end of the course by papers at either F or H tier. These exams include questions designed to assess the skills and curriculum content formerly covered in controlled assessment or coursework, addressed within the context of the required practicals. There are six examinations in total (two for each strand of science), each exam lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, and each is equally weighted in the final award of two GCSE grades. Exam entry information Exam entries remain the responsibility of the referring school or local authority. This course is designed to meet the requirements of one specification, the details of which are in the table below: Specification number: 8464 QAN code: 601/8758/X 5

Entry codes: 8464F or 8464H GCSE Combined Science Rescue: Trilogy ( 8464) One year course delivering some of the more accessible topics in GCSE Combined Science F tier only A subset of the full Combined Science (F) course, adapted for less academically motivated students Suitable for Y11 who have missed significant periods of schooling but wish to work towards a GCSE grade Targeted for grades 1-3 Required practical activities are embedded within the course and delivered via video, simulations, detailed study of methods and results analysis, complemented by practice examination material from courses which have previously assessed practical work in this way Fully accredited to receive DfE funding through Section 96 Ofqual approved and eligible for inclusion in school performance tables. Course overview and content The course prepares students for examinations in Combined Science at the end of Year 11. The course content will cover selected and more straightforward topics only within the following subject areas: Atoms Cell Biology Particle Model Bonding and Properties Organisation Energy Chemical Changes Infection and Response Electricity Assessment Energy Changes Bioenergetics Nuclear Radiation Homeostasis and Response Forces Inheritance and Evolution Organic Chemistry Ecology Waves Regular review and assessment material throughout the course will allow for effective tracking of pupil progress supporting students in developing effective revision and exam technique. Examination procedures Assessment is entirely by written exam at the end of the course by six papers at either F or H tier, approximately 3 weeks apart. These exams include questions designed to assess the skills and 6

curriculum content formerly covered in controlled assessment or coursework, addressed within the context of the required practicals. Each exam lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, and each is equally weighted in the final award of two GCSE grades. Exam entry information Exam entries remain the responsibility of the referring school or local authority. This course is designed to meet the requirements of one specification, the details of which are in the table below: Specification number: 8464 QAN code: Entry code: 601/8758/X 8464F 7

GCSE Triple Top-Up ( 8461, 8462, 8463) One year course designed to deliver the additional content required to allow Combined Science students to access GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics and thus access three GCSE grades The course is timetabled so that incoming Year 11 students can opt to study Top-Up alongside both the Y10 and Y11 Combined Science content Students who choose this course would normally be expected to be studying at least the Year 11 Combined Science course with Academy21 Delivered at Higher tier only Recommended for students who wish to pursue STEM topics in post-16 education Additional required practical activities are covered in the same way as used for Combined Science Fully accredited to receive DfE funding through Section 96 Ofqual approved and eligible for inclusion in school performance tables. Course overview and content The course prepares students for examinations in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at the end of Year 11. Each of the topics listed in the Combined Science course are considered, but in greater depth and with additional extension material, augmenting the work covered in the standard Y10 and Y11 courses. As part of the Physics GCSE, a further short unit on Space Science is also studied. Examination procedures Assessment is entirely by written exam at the end of the course by six papers approximately 3 weeks apart. These exams include questions designed to assess the skills and curriculum content formerly covered in controlled assessment or coursework, addressed within the context of the required practicals. Each exam lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, so that both the Combined Science and the additional separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics content can be assessed. Three final GCSE grades are awarded, one each for the Biology, Chemistry and Physics qualifications. Each paper within the individual qualification is equally weighted
