4 Class of 2020 Graduation Requirements (students who entered grade nine ) 24 total units required for all students 4 units of English Language Arts 4 units of Mathematics (Coordinate Algebra, Analytical Geometry, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus or Accelerated Sequence and AP Calculus/AP Statistics or MOWR) 4 units of Science 4 units of Social Studies 1 unit of Intro to Business Tech or Intro to Digital Tech ½ unit of Health & ½ unit of Personal Fitness (3 units of JROTC may be used to fulfill this requirement) 3 units from CTAE and/or Foreign Language and/or Fine Arts for all students (students planning to enter or transfer into University System of Georgia institution must take two units of the same foreign language). 3 additional elective units for all students Review Checklist in the TCHS Course Description Catalog (located on TCHS website)

5 Georgia Milestones EOC The GA Milestones End of Course exams (EOCs) will contribute 20% to the course grade (for those core courses in which an EOC is mandated). Students who entered grade nine in or afterwards are required to pass the course with the weight of the EOC applied to the course grade. Remind students to keep study materials throughout the semester so they will be prepared for exams.

8 Infinite Campus Information IC-Parent Portal is a web-based program which allows parental access to a student s attendance record, a list of grades along with the current average of each class recorded in the electronic grade book, and the current daily schedule of classes. 9 PSAT for 10th grade students What is it? - Preliminary SAT practice for the SAT. Why are we giving it? -Exposes students to the SAT early -Data can help identify students strengths and weaknesses Given Wednesday, Oct 11 th at TCHS (Free for Sophomores) Sign up in the Counseling office today! Deadline to sign up is September 22 nd.

10 SAT We normally recommend students take the SAT for the first time in the 11 th grade and then again in the 12 th grade. Students may take the SAT as many times as they like but may only qualify for 2 waivers. In order to participate in the Dual Enrollment Program, taking the SAT is the FIRST step. Most colleges require a SAT score before admittance. A schedule of tests can be found on and in the counseling office.

11 MOWR/Dual Enrollment Dual enrollment is the term used for students who are attending college for all or part of their day, while also enrolled in a high school. In order to participate in dual enrollment, a student must first take the SAT, apply to a college, then set up an appointment with their parent and counselor to take care of the necessary paperwork. On October 12 th, in our media center, we will hold on informational meeting at 5:30.

12 What is a Transcript? A transcript is a cumulative permanent record. It lists all courses taken in high school and the grades received. Colleges will use transcripts to help determine the type of college student you will be. A transcript includes cumulative numeric average. All grades earned during 9 th -12 th grade are part of the cumulative numeric average. By the end of this school year, a student can earn a total of 8 credits 4 per semester.

14 Honors & AP Courses Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in each academic subject area. We recommend that students challenge themselves by taking Honors and AP level courses in as many subject areas as possible. Research shows that students who are successful in college have typically taken rigorous and challenging coursework in high school (like the coursework offered in Honors and AP classes). If a student plans to take an AP course, they should be prepared for college-level coursework.

15 Honors & AP Courses It is highly recommended that students who wish to obtain admission to a selective college/university take Honors and AP level courses in high school. An AP course is the highest level course that a student can take while in high school. AP courses are taught at the college level. Students in AP courses have the opportunity to take an AP exam at the end of the course, which may allow them to earn college credit.

16 8 Reasons To Take A Foreign Language If a student plans to attend college, they need to take at least 2 units in the same foreign language. 1. Improves your thinking skills 2. Enhances your ability to communicate 3. Improves your reading & writing skills 4. Fosters an appreciation for different cultures and customs 5. Expands world view 6. Provides marketable skills 7. Improves preparedness for the global market 8. Opens more job and travel opportunities

17 Credit Recovery A student who previously failed a course during high school with a grade that is no lower than a 60 may be eligible for Credit Recovery. Priority is given to graduating seniors and then juniors and sophomores according to available space and on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must meet with their assigned guidance counselors to request Credit Recovery. Credit Recovery courses utilize on-line computer programs such as Edgenuity. Students should see their counselor for more information.

18 Credit Repair Students earning an average of for a course will be allowed to repair the credit in the semester that follows the one in which the failing grade was received. Students must contact their school counselor to discuss the requirements for Credit Repair and to receive a Credit Repair Contract. Students will have ten days at the beginning of the semester to complete the assignments and submit them to the teacher.

19 HOPE Scholarship Program Go to for the specific HOPE information for your graduation year. A preliminary eligibility requirement for HOPE is that a student must pass at least 4 HOPE rigor classes and have a 3.0 academic GPA. Go to Gafutures.org for all updates or changes.

21 Zell Miller Scholarship* (100% HOPE Scholarship) All students entering the scholarship program must earn at least a 3.7 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language coursework attempted between grades A minimum of a 1200 on the Math and Critical Reading portion on the SAT in one test administration or score at least a 26 composite on the ACT SAT or ACT must be taken before graduation date to qualify Or graduate as the Valedictorian or Salutatorian from an eligible high school and meet the eligibility requirements for the HOPE Scholarship. Note: There can only be one Valedictorian and one Salutatorian per eligible high school. Be sure to stay up to date of any HOPE Scholarship Program changes at HOPE is set yearly and can change from year to year

22 How to Convert to a 4.0 GPA This calculation may be used to calculate your GPA for scholarship and college applications. To calculate the GPA you will need a copy of your transcript from the Counseling Department. Each "A" is worth 4 points each, "B" 3 points each, "C" 2 points, and each "F" 0 points. A= B=89-80 C=79-70 F=69-0 Total # of A's Total # of B's Total # of C's Total # of F's x 4 = x 3 = x 2 = x 0 = Total number of points Total number of Core-Curriculum Classes Divide the total points by the total number of core-curriculum classes. This will be your core GPA. Core GPA

23 Attendance is Important Encourage your student to be here each day! Stress the importance of being on time to class! Remind students to bring an excuse when they are absent. Students have three days to bring in an excuse.

24 How students can meet with a School Counselor? See Mrs. Jackson in the Counseling Office for an appointment time and appointment pass. The appointment will be with the appropriate school counselor: A-C - Mrs. Wells D-I - Mr. Guzman J-P - Mrs. Devereaux Q-Z- Mrs. Parker Students should always have a pass when they arrive and will be provided a pass when they return to class.
