Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to analyze human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice. ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN CIVILIZATIONS This course is a survey of the evolution of society from the Fertile Crescent through Greek and Roman civilizations. Students examine the rise of civilizations in the Near East and their legacies. Greek civilization is studied from its historical roots through Alexander s empire, emphasizing forces of change and aspects that provide a basis for Western thought. The course concludes with a study of the Roman Era. COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT & POLITICS, A/B The course examines the governments, political systems and policy differences throughout the countries of the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Mexico, Nigeria and Iran. The course illustrates the rich diversity of political life, to show available institutional alternatives, to explain differences in policy outcomes, and to communicate to students the importance of global political and economic changes. MACROECONOMICS ECONOMICS SEMESTER A The macroeconomics course gives students a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination, and also develops students familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. MICROECONOMICS ECONOMICS SEMESTER B - The microeconomics course gives students a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to the functions of individual decision makers, both consumers and producers, within the economic system. The course begins with a study of fundamental economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, production possibilities, specialization, and comparative advantage. It places primary emphasis on the nature and functions of product markets, and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity in the economy. 13
