5 Develop Measurable Guidelines These are parameters that will be used to determine the effectiveness of potential boundary options. Examples include: Balance utilization among all schools while allowing for future growth or other demographic changes. Minimize student transportation and travel time. Utilize geographical boundaries (major roads, subdivisions, rivers, etc.). Attempt to assign entire neighborhoods to the same schools. Maintain diverse student populations (Socio-economics, race / ethnicity). Consideration of vertical alignment (Pathways from elementary to middle school to high school). 5

6 Develop Measurable Guidelines There is no prioritization of guidelines. Some may be in direct contradiction of others. The intent is to provide a measurable way to compare options to each other. 6

7 Assemble Steering Committee A steering committee, composed of parents and other community members, is critical to a successful process. Steering Committee Member Roles and Responsibilities: Be objective and consider the needs of ALL TVLSD students. Attend all steering committee meetings Share information with your neighbors and help get the word out about the process. What is not going to happen? A small segment of the community will stack the committee to push an agenda. 7

8 Assemble Steering Committee Steering Committee Composition parents and community members Geographically diverse Teachers and administrators may participate, but must adhere to roles and responsibilities. Steering Committee Selection Applications were submitted online Applicants from over-represented areas self selected to come to the appropriate number of members. 8
