2 IB Mission Statement High quality international education for a better world The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

5 IB World School Characteristics The IB does not own or manage any schools. Instead, it works with schools that share a commitment to international education. 8 The IB Primary Years Programme
9 PYP Overview The IB Primary Years Programme, for students aged 3 to 12, focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The PYP is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.

12 The PYP Curriculum Framework As well as presenting schools with a philosophical perspective on what international education may be, the PYP prescribes a curriculum framework of essential elements knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action each of which is reflected in the IB learner profile and is a reference point for the construction of a school s curriculum.

18 PYP Assessment The PYP requires valid and varied assessment that: drives instruction; recognizes the importance of the process and product; utilizes differentiation ( through summative and formative models).
19 What does it mean to be a PYP school? A PYP school is a school which regardless of location, size or constitution, strives towards the development of international-mindedness. From the PYP s perspective, an internationally-minded student is one with the attributes and dispositions described in the IB learner profile.
20 Is it true? All students must be taught an additional language from the age of 7? The PYP is a school-wide programme for all students? The practice of departmentalization or single-subject teaching does NOT support the philosophy or pedagogy of the PYP? YES!

26 Required activities: Consideration Phase / Request for candidacy Submit School information form Investigate IB philosophy Analyze programme requirements and identify resources for implementation Gain support from teachers, head of school, school district/board and students Order IB publications Designate a coordinator Develop an action plan for successful implementation Head of school attends a category 1 workshop for Administrators Contact or visit IB World Schools offering the PYP Connect with a regional association of IB World Schools
27 Application For Candidacy Activities: ü obtaining the relevant publications by purchasing them from the IB store - ü examining the programme s philosophy and curriculum to determine whether these meet the needs of its students ü conducting a feasibility study on the possible consequences of implementing the programme ü beginning to send staff to category 1 workshops (the coordinator and the head of school) required for candidacy
28 Required Professional Development From Guide to school authorization: Primary Years Programme: The head of school or designee must attend an IB category 1 workshop before submission of Application for candidacy: Primary Years Programme. The pedagogical leadership and all faculty who work with PYP students full- or part-time must all be trained in IB category 1 workshops. It is expected that the professional development has taken place before the verification visit. Schools are encouraged to participate in IB professional development activities as early as possible to ensure that they make an informed decision regarding the future implementation of an IB programme.
29 Candidacy Phase Following acceptance of the Application for Candidacy, the school is designated an IB candidate school. Activities: ü Continuing attendance at IB-approved professional development ü Developing curriculum planning documentation ü Organizing teacher collaborative planning and teaming
30 Candidate Fees USD $4,000* application fee due with the Application for Candidacy USD $9,500* payable annually commencing from date of when candidacy is granted What you receive: ü Thorough review of the school s applications ü Ongoing counseling services by IB Americas ü Subscription to the online curriculum centre for all school staff ü A two-day on-site consultation visit ü The remote services of a consultant for up to 20 hours (year 1) ü The remote services of a consultant for up to 20 hours (year 2) ü The two-day on-site authorization visit *All fees are subject to change
31 Verification Visit Provided previous stages have been completed successfully, the school submits the Application for Authorization and the regional office arranges for the school to be visited by an IB team. The purpose of this visit is to: ü consult those who will be involved in the implementation of the programme ü evaluate the school s preparedness to implement the programme ü complete a report on the school s commitment and ability to deliver the programme.
32 Annual School Fee (authorized) USD $7,600* payable annually upon authorization What you receive: ü ü ü ü Creation and development of curriculum materials and teacher support guides Subscription to IB World magazine Subscription to the online curriculum centre for all teachers and school staff Ongoing counseling services *All fees are subject to change
