3 Course Offerings Regents courses Algebra I Geometry (Honors) Algebra II (Honors) Each course commences with a NYS Regents examination. Elective courses Logic and Topics Functions & Trigonometry Statistics PreCalculus Each course commences with a departmental final. International Baccalaureate (IB) courses IB Math SL IB Math Studies SL Each course commences with the IB examination and a departmental final. Advanced Placement (AP) courses AP Statistics AP Calculus AB AP Calculus BC Each course commences with the AP examination and a departmental final. College credit course College Calculus 4 undergraduate Syracuse University credits Course commences in a departmental final.
4 NYS Regents Exams and Diplomas NYS Regents Exams Algebra I Geometry Algebra II NYS Diploma Requirements for Mathematics Regents Diploma: a passing score of 65 or higher on at least one Regents in Mathematics Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation: a passing score of 65 or higher on ALL Regents in Mathematics *3 credits of math are required for graduation*
5 Course Descriptions Algebra I: Students will take as their first high school math credit. This course meets for 1.5 periods. Geometry: Students formalize and extend geometric experiences from the middle grades. This course meets for 1.5 periods. Geometry Honors: It is strongly recommended that students going into this course have maintained 85 or better (mastery) in each quarter, midterm exam, and Algebra I Regents. This course meets for 1 period. Logic and Topics: This course allows students to build a stronger Algebra I knowledge base and begins the concepts taught in Geometry. This course meets for 1 period. Algebra II: This is the culmination of Regents-level courses. It is recommended students have a strong, conceptual algebra knowledge base. This course meets for 1.5 periods. Algebra II Honors: It is strongly recommended that students going into this course have maintained 85 or better (mastery) in each quarter, midterm exam, Algebra I Regents and Geometry Regents. This course meets for 1 period. Trigonometry & Functions: This course allows students gain a stronger knowledge base required for Algebra II. Students will begin working on topics taught in Algebra II. This course meets for 1 period. (NCAA approved)
6 Bridge Courses SUMMER 2018 BRIDGE COURSE INFORMATION Students self-selecting into Geometry, Geometry Honors, Algebra II, and Algebra II Honors who do not meet the requirements and/or were not recommended by their current math teacher will be required to attend a two-week Summer Bridge Course during July/August. Students who do not attend the required Summer Bridge Course will be required to complete a summer project. Students who do not complete the Bridge Course nor the Summer Project will be rescheduled for their originally recommended math course for the school year.
7 Course Descriptions continued PreCalculus: Students extend their work from Algebra II and begin to go more deeply into concepts. Students will be introduced to Calculus topics. This course meets for 1 period. Statistics: This is a senior-only course. Students will study topics related to prior coursework, along with probability and statistics. This course meets for 1 period. (NCAA approved) College Calculus: This course is offered for 4 undergraduate credits through Syracuse University, MAT 295. This course will teach a college Calculus course for the full year, as opposed to a semester. It is recommended that students have an final average of 80 or higher in PreCalculus. This course meets for 1 period. *Note: These courses do not lead to a Regents examination and will end in a departmental final.
8 Course Descriptions continued International Baccalaureate (IB) courses may be taken for the IB diploma or as a stand-alone course. Students will take the IB examination in May. During the length of the course, students will complete an internal assessment and external assessment. Both courses follow IB guidelines. IB Math SL: This course prepares students to take AP Calculus. Students extend prior concepts and begin to explore calculus. Students will continue to AP Calculus AB or BC. Students are required to take the IB examination in May. It is recommended that students have a final average of 85 or higher from Algebra II Honors. This course meets for 1.5 periods. IB Math Studies SL: Students are required to take the IB examination in May. This course follows IB guidelines. It is recommended that students pass the Algebra II Regents. This course meets for 1.5 periods.
9 Course Descriptions continued Advanced Placement (AP) courses allow students to earn college credit. This credit is dependent upon the score earned the AP examination (usually 3 or higher) and the college the student will be attending. Students taking an AP course in mathematics must sit for the examination in May. AP Statistics: Students are exposed to a college-level, non-calculus based course in statistics. This course explores data, planning/conducting surveys and experiments, probability, normal distribution, statistical inference, etc. This course meets for 1 period. AP Calculus AB: Students will study topics in Calculus I. This course studies limits, differentiation, integration, etc. This course meets for 1 period. AP Calculus BC: Students will study topics in Calculus II. This course includes limits, differentiation, integration, and sequence and series, etc. This course meets for 1 period.
