1 PARSONS VIKING NEWSLETTER VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR HIGH SCHOOL Apr/May 2018 Volume 6 No. 5 FINALS EXEMPTION POLICY Each semester, students who meet the following criteria may opt to be exempt from three final exams: an A in the class, no unexcused absences in that hour, 6 or fewer excused absences in that hour, and no OSS in any hour. Finals will not be given early. Absences during finals will be made up on May 18 th for 9 th -11 th grades, and May 11 th for 12 th grade. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS All scholarships seniors will be receiving must be turned in to the Guidance Office as soon as possible. Seniors will be recognized in a ceremony in the PHS Cafeteria on May 6 th at 5:30 p.m. in conjunction with the Parsons Education Foundation. PROM 2018 The Junior- Senior Prom will be held Saturday, April 7, from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. in the Parsons High School auxiliary gym. The theme this year is Enchanted Evening. Walk-In will be at 7:00 p.m. at PHS and everyone is welcome. Parents may view the decorated gym on April 7 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Please be thoughtful and observe this time because after 7:00, it will be devoted to the students. 2 FINALS Senior finals will be May 7, 8, and 9. Finals for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be May 15, 16, and 17. SENIOR INFORMATION Baccalaureate will be held May 9 th at 5:30 p.m. in the HS auditorium. The senior breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. in the high school community room on May 10. The senior class picture will be taken after breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the high school, and graduation practice will start at 9:00 a.m. in the high school gym. Graduation will be in the high school gym at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 13. No tickets will be required. LAST CHANCE FOR DRIVERS EDUCATION The last drivers ed classroom session of the school year will be May 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9. You may contact Mr. Krull for further information or pick up information at the high school office. 3 PROJECT PROM 2018 Saturday, April 7th 11:45 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. Parsons High School The 2018 Project Prom committee encourages all seniors, juniors, and their guests to attend this year s Project Prom. Students do not have to attend Prom to attend Project Prom. Tickets for Project Prom were on sale March 27 th at lunch through March 29 th in the commons area. Tickets were $10.00 each which included a t-shirt. As in the past, zero tolerance will be in effect to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. Stated rules and regulations will be as follows: at the discretion of a parent staff, students will be sent home for inappropriate behavior and/or drug or alcohol use. Parents will be contacted if their child wishes to leave Project Prom before 4:00 a.m. and will also be contacted if their child purchased a ticket but did not check in for the evening. All attendees must be checked in by 12:00 a.m. at which time the doors will be locked. Parent donations are still being accepted ($5, $10, $20 ). If you have not done so already, please send your donation to Project Prom, c/o David Keaton, 98 Main Street, Parsons, KS. Your continued support is appreciated. We need parent volunteers to help with Project Prom night at the high school. It takes at least two parents at each game to keep things running smoothly. We have some really fun games and inflatables again this year. We also need help on Sunday morning with clean up if this would be better for your schedule. Watch for updates on our Facebook page, Parsons High School Project Prom CALENDARS Please go the Parsons High School website to view the calendars. To view the regular calendar, go to the high school website, click on Go to Full Calendar, select the month you want to see from the drop down menu & then click Go. If you hover your mouse over the event, it will show you the location & time. Athletic events are now listed on the main calendar. MUSIC The Regional Music Festival for solos and small ensembles will be held on Saturday, April 14 th, at PSU. Participants who earn a 1 rating will advance to the state festival on April 28 th at Larned HS. The Orchestra Spring Concert will be held on April 30th, at 7:00 p.m. in the PHS Auditorium. The MS/HS Band Spring Concert will be held May 3 nd, at 7:00 p.m. in the PHS Auditorium. The Parsons Middle School and High School Pop Choir Concert will take place on Wednesday, May 9 th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.

4 FORENSICS NFL LD/PF/DUO April 6 th -7 th Fort Scott NFL District IEs April 20 th -21st Pittsburg State Forensics May 4 th -5th Washburn Rural Topeka GRADUATION POLICY The Parsons High School Graduation Ceremony Policy is as follows: In order to participate in the graduation ceremony, the following must be completed: units of credit must be achieved. 2. All fees and fines must be paid prior to May 1 st, unless prior arrangements have been made with the principal. 3. Disciplinary sanctions must be served and completed. Diplomas will be awarded after successful completion of the education program, and the educational program ends following the graduation ceremony. Diplomas and academic letters will be issued the day after the graduation ceremony. ACADEMIC LETTERS Seniors who have earned an academic letter for the school year will be recognized at graduation. They will receive their award with their diploma after graduation. Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 will receive their award at the beginning of the school year.

5 WORKING WITH THE SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD IS BULLIED Follow the chain of command: Contact the teacher responsible where your child is having problems or your child s classroom teacher or counselor. Let them know what is going on with your child. Only go up the chain of command if you feel that these staff members are not effectively addressing your child s physical and emotional safety. If there is a meeting: Present to the teacher relevant information about the bullying incidents and anti-bullying strategies already attempted. Be prepared with realistic strategies that can reasonably be implemented. Inform the school ahead of time if you would like certain staff members to attend the meeting. A good safety plan addresses which staff members are responsible for supervising your child and how they should react if your child is bullied. The plan should state how your child is expected to react if confronted by a bully. Practice assertiveness skills with your child to effectively respond to bullying. Make sure your child is involved with the plan. If the bullying doesn t stop, work with the school to develop a safety plan: For the plan to work, your child must have buy-in. Make sure your child feels good about the plan and believes the plan has a realistic chance of working. Give your child a day or two to consider the pros and cons and to become comfortable with the plan. To meet, develop and implement a safety plan may take 5-10 school days. Remember to evaluate the plan s effectiveness in about 3-4 weeks. You know if the plan is working by answering the question, Is my child safe?
