Medical Schools Entry Requirements (April 2010) Until quite recently many medical schools would not allow both Mathematics and Further Mathematics qualifications to count towards meeting their offers. Fortunately this is changing and most medical schools will now count Further Mathematics, especially at AS level, alongside A level Mathematics. This document lists UK Medical Schools and their entry requirements, highlighting references to Further Mathematics. The document was prepared by the Further Mathematics Support Programme and is based on data collected in April If you have any queries relating to Further Mathematics and medical schools, please contact Charlie Stripp at charliestripp@furthermaths.org.uk. Name Link Requirement Comments Aberdeen Medical School To be considered: AAB* in three A-Levels taken together at first sitting over a maximum of two years of study: > Chemistry required to grade B minimum. > One subject from Biology/Human Biology, Maths & Physics required > One further A-Level in most other subjects. Check with Medical Admissions Office if in doubt about suitability of a subject. > Combinations of Chemistry, Biology plus a Non-Science subject are as acceptable as all-science combinations. General Studies not acceptable. * AAA required for all 2012 entrants (see above) Although we would advise applicants to study the broadest range of all topics as possible, as long as applicants meet our requirements as above we would consider Further Maths and Maths as two separate A-Levels. We cannot comment upon the requirements of other institutions. Please also note that all applicants for medicine must take the UK Clinical Aptitude Test prior to application. Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry Biology and Chemistry at AS-Level, and one or both of these subjects at A2 Level. If you are planning to drop either Biology or Chemistry before A2, you must attain a grade in that subject at AS-Level. You must have at least two science A2s, one of which is either Biology or Chemistry, as well as a third A2 which can be either another science or non science subjects. We also require an additional AS-Level in any academic subject at B grade. GCSE requirement: at least 6 B grades or above, including English Language, Maths and Science. Excluded A-Level subjects- General Studies and Critical Thinking. If A-Level Maths is offered, Further Maths is not counted as a separate A2 but acceptable as an additional AS Level only. Version 1.0 Page 1

Queens University Belfast Medical School Offers will be made on the basis of 3 A-Levels and 1 AS Level. For September 2010 the entry grades required will be AAA at A-Level plus A in a fourth different AS Level. For Medicine and Dentistry, A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics cannot be counted together but one would be acceptable at A-Level and the other at AS. Where we make offers, these would be conditional on obtaining AAA at A-Level (to include Chemistry and at least one from Mathematics, Biology and Physics) plus A in a fourth AS subject. Birmingham Medical School A-Level- ABB: A-Level students must have two sciences from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics Biology at AS Level minimum is advised We would not be able to consider Maths and Further Maths as 2 separate A-Levels for an offer for Medicine Bristol Medical School You will need to achieve AAB at A2 Level including an A in Chemistry and one other laboratory based science subject. General Studies is not an approved subject; from 2009, Critical Thinking will also be excluded; these should be certificated at the same sitting, at the first attempt and completed in two years. You should be aware that if you are offering three A2 Levels, t he choice of subjects should avoid undue overlap of content. For example Biology and Physical Education; Biology and Sports Science; Maths and Further Maths. Version 1.0 Page 2

Brighton and Sussex Medical School UCAS points for three A-Levels, following the study four subjects to AS Level. These may be achieved by obtaining AAA or A*AB at A-Level. Biology and Chemistry are the most important subjects for students who wish to study medicine. All prospective BSMS students will have studied both Biology and Chemistry at A-Level and gain an A grade. Maths and Further Maths if taken together are treated as two separate A-Levels. A wide range of skills and knowledge are relevant to medicine, and a correspondingly wide range of A-Levels may contribute positively. A and AS Levels in Psychology, Computing, Maths, English, Humanities, Law and Physics all have important advantages and skills to offer potential medical students. We do not prescribe any subjects you should take as the 'third' A-Level, with only General Studies and Critical Thinking normally being excluded from conditional offers. Cambridge Medical School Passes in three of the following: Biology/ Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics. One of the subjects must be Chemistry and at least one pass must be at A-Level. The typical A-Level offer is A*AA. Chemistry A-Level is highly desirable. At St John's College, A-Level Chemistry is essential. Applicants with two science/mathematics subjects are expected to have comparable ability with those who are taking three and will, wherever possible, be considered equally with them. In these circumstances the applicant will normally be expected to achieve the A* grade in one of the science/ Mathematics A-Level subjects and may be asked to take a third science/ Mathematics subject to AS Level. Passes at grades A, B or C in: Double Award Science and Mathematics (two single awards in GCSE Biology and Physics may be substituted for Double Award Science). BMAT needed. Mathematics and Further Mathematics are regarded as two separate A- Levels. Version 1.0 Page 3

Cardiff Medical School AAB grades at A-Level, plus C grade in a fourth AS-Level. A- Levels must include two science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Statistics, one of which must be Biology or Chemistry with A grade. C grade at AS- Level in an additional subject not offered at A-Level. Biology or Chemistry must be offered at AS Level with a grade B if not offered at A-Level. General Studies not accepted. Critical Thinking only accepted as fourth AS Level. Key Skills Level 3 in three subjects is an alternative to an AS Level. We do not accept Further Maths as a separate A-Level to Maths at A-Level. Dundee Medical School AAA at A-Level (excluding General Studies). Chemistry and another science (SQA Higher, GCE A-Level, ILC Higher or IB Higher Level) and Biology at Standard Grade (grade 2), Intermediate 2 (grade C), GCSE (grade B), ILC Ordinary (grade B) or IB Subsidiary Level (grade 5). We regard Maths and Further Maths as separate subjects. So an applicant could apply with A-Levels in Chemistry (compulsory) and the two Maths A-Levels. Durham Medical School 1.medicine/ AAA at A-Level. Subjects should include Chemistry and/or Biology at A or AS Level. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A or AS Level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A (or Dual Award Science grade A). We do not accept General Studies or Critical Thinking as an A-Level entry qualification. Further Maths and Maths are counted as two separate subjects. University of East Anglia Medical School For A-Level entry we require the grades AAB in three subjects at the full A-Level. This must include Biology (or Human Biology) as one of the subjects. In addition we require a minimum grade B in a fourth AS Level subject. We do not specify Chemistry as a required subject and will accept a whole range of other subjects (excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking) for the second and third A-Levels and fourth AS Level. We would accept both A2 Maths and Further Maths as two separate subject. Version 1.0 Page 4

Edinburgh Medical School AAA in A-Level including Chemistry plus Grade B at AS Level. A-Levels must include Chemistry and one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. Biology at AS Level required as minimum. Only one of Mathematics or Further Mathematics will be considered. Human Biology may replace Biology. General Studies will not be considered. GCSEs: Grade B in Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics. Double Award Combined Sciences or equivalent at Grade BB may replace GCSE Grades in sciences. Additional Applied Sciences or Applied Science will not be accepted. All examination grades must be obtained at the first attempt of each subject. Those applying with re-sit qualifications (other than GCE AS Levels) will not be entered into the selection system unless under very exceptional circumstances (for which verified evidence has been provided prior to UCAS application). Glasgow Medical School All A-Level subjects are accepted, including General Studies. The University of Glasgow Medical School does not consider Maths and Further Maths as two separate subjects at A-Level. Guy's King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine ex.html AAA at A-Level & B at one separate AS Level. Compulsory subjects: Chemistry and Biology, at least one at A-Level, the other may be at AS Level. We welcome applicants who offer non science subjects chosen from the range of humanities, languages and social sciences. If A-Level Maths is offered, Further Maths is acceptable at AS Level only. GCSE requirements: Grade B in English and Mathematics if either of these are not offered at A or AS-Level. Version 1.0 Page 5

Hull York Medical School You must have all of the following: GCSE English Language (A). GCSE Maths (A). Six other GCSEs at grades A-C.A- Levels: Our typical offer is AAA, including Biology, Chemistry and a third subject at A2 Level. You will also need a fourth subject at AS Level grade B. (For meeting these requirements, we don't accept General Studies or Critical Thinking.) We only require 3 A-Levels and 1 AS Level; need Biology and Chemistry to full A-Level so we do not need students to do two more full A-Levels. We do consider students doing Maths A-Level and Further Maths AS Level, however we do not recommend students continue it too full A-Level as it is too much Maths and can have a detrimental effect on their other subjects. You can also offer a single vocational A-Level in Health and Social Care or IT, or a distinction in a single Level 3 BTEC award or certificate, in combination with Biology and Chemistry A-Levels. Imperial College School of Medicine The minimum entry requirements for this course are as follows: three A-Levels, including Chemistry and/or Biology and one science or Mathematics subject, and one additional subject at AS Level. If either Chemistry or Biology is offered alone at A-Level, then the other is required at AS Level with at least a grade B Mathematics and Further Mathematics are accepted as separate subjects. All applicants must have the following subjects at GCSE Level, at grades AAABB or above (in any order): Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics or Statistics) and Physics. The Science Double Award may substitute all sciences at GCSE. Keele University Medical School A-Level grades need to be AAB including Biology or Chemistry plus another science subject, but we don't insist on one of the A grades being Chemistry. A2 requirements - Maths or Further Maths accepted as one science subject, but both would not be considered as 2 separate science subjects. Leeds Medical School A reasonable range of good grades including at least 6 grade Bs including English and Maths, and either Dual Science or Chemistry and Biology. At least AAB, including Chemistry at grade A. There is no restriction on subjects accepted other than the fact that General Studies and Critical Thinking are not acceptable. Those taking a 4th A2 subject will not be at an advantage over those taking three. We do not accept Chemistry (which is mandatory) with Maths and Further Maths as a combination of 3 A-Levels. As we only ask for Chemistry at A2 (we do not require Biology) and would accept two arts subjects with Chemistry as a combination as we seek to encourage breadth. Version 1.0 Page 6

Leicester Medical School For A100 MBChB: A/AS Levels: Normally four AS Level subjects, including Chemistry and Biology, excluding General Studies. Three GCE A-Levels including Chemistry (required), excluding General Studies. Typical offer: Normally AAB from GCE A- Levels. An A in Chemistry is required. GCSE: Applicants must have a minimum of a C in English Language, Maths and Sciences. An offer would be based on only one: Maths or Further Maths. Liverpool Medical School /index.htm A-Level: A(Chemistry), A (Biology), B (third A-Level), plus B in 4th AS Level Subject requirements: (A) Biology, (A) Chemistry and one other A-Level subject at B. General Studies or Critical Thinking are NOT accepted as third the A-Level. We cannot accept Maths A- Level and Further Maths AS Level. Manchester Medical School Normal A-Level offer after a successful interview would be grades AAB with minimum of an A in Chemistry We do accept Further Maths as a separate A- Level. We would not accept Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths in one sitting. Subjects required: Chemistry, plus one from Biology, Human Biology, Physics or Mathematics, plus one further subject (not Critical Thinking or General Studies). Newcastle Medical School AAA including Chemistry and/or Biology at A or AS Level and excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A or AS Level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A (or Dual Award Science grade A). Nottingham and Derby Medical School Medicine entry requirement change for 2011 The entry requirements for Medicine have increased to AAA for 2011 entry. Subjects need to include Biology and Chemistry and a third subject (excluding only General Studies and Critical Thinking). With regards to Further Maths, this is a separate qualification and would be included, if an A, as part of AAA requirement. We will be using the UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test) in the selection process of our undergraduate (A100) BM BS course for entry in 2011 and deferred entry in This applies to all home, EU and overseas candidates. Version 1.0 Page 7

Oxford Medical School 3 A-Levels (or equivalent qualification) are required. These must include Chemistry AND Biology and/or Mathematics and/or Physics. Our standard conditional offer is AAA at A- Level (excluding General Studies). If you don t have Mathematics, Biology and Physics at A-Level you must have top grades at GCSE in these subjects (or Combined Sciences). All candidates must also take the Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) as part of their application. Peninsula Medical School The typical offer is three A grades at GCE A-Level which must include two science subjects from Biology, Chemistry or Physics. A fourth subject must be studied at AS Level. If Biology or Chemistry is not studied at A-Level, this must be studied at AS Level. General Studies at A/AS Level is not included within any offer. Plus a UKAT test. We specify that A-Level subjects cannot overlap; therefore we would not accept both Maths and Further Maths together towards the three A grades we require at A-Level. However Further Maths is acceptable as the 4th AS subject which we require. Royal Free and University College Medical School The BMAT is compulsory for all UCL Medicine applicants. Chemistry must be studied at A-Level, Biology must be studied at either A or AS Level. Candidates have a free choice of other AS or A-Level subjects, with following exceptions: General Studies and Critical Thinking at A-Level may be considered but only in place of the additional AS Level. The standard conditional offer will be AAB at A Level (for three A-Levels taken in one sitting and excluding A- Levels taken 'early') and a pass in an additional AS Level or grade B in AS Level Biology. The UCAS reference must list both the A and AS Level grades as predictions in order for the candidate to be considered further. Please note that A-Levels from recognised UK examination boards are the only Advanced Levels accepted. From 2010 the standard offer will be raised to AAA at A-Level and a grade B in an additional AS Level. Please note that some preference will be given to those applicants who, in addition to Chemistry and Biology, offer a contrasting subject at A or AS Level. In this context the definition of a contrasting subject is a subject outside of the traditional science subjects of Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. For example, a foreign language, English Literature, History, Geography, Art, Music, Religious Studies, Psychology, ICT etc. Version 1.0 Page 8

Sheffield Medical School You should study four AS subjects, subjects must include Chemistry and another science subject. You should aim to achieve grades of A and three Bs in any of these subjects. Please note that the Medical School places more emphasis on GCSE and A2 Level results than on AS Levels. Thus, we are more flexible over our AS requirements than we are over our GCSE and A2 requirements. Our offer for subjects taken at A-Level is AAB to include Chemistry and another science subject and it is expected that these will be taken in one sitting. The third A-Level can be in any other subject. Maths and Further Maths are counted as separate subjects. (General Studies is not acceptable) UKAT required. Southampton Medical School AAA, including Chemistry (alternatively, AS Level Chemistry and Biology/Human Biology can be offered at grade A in addition to grades AAA at A-Level). General studies is not accepted. Subjects with material that overlaps (e.g. Biology/Sports Studies, Maths/Further Maths) may not be offered in combination at A-Level. UKAT required Bute Medical School St Andrews AAB (A-Levels) including Chemistry (A) and one other of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. (The average predicted grades for successful applicants are AAA) For 2011 entry the requirements will be AAA (A-Levels) including Chemistry (A) and one other of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. If Biology and Mathematics are not offered at A2 or AS Level, each must normally have been passed at GCSE grade B or better. Dual award Science is not acceptable in lieu of GCSE Biology. A pass must also be offered in GCSE English at grade B or better. Human Biology may replace Biology. UKAT required. Maths and Further Maths are not counted as separate subjects at A-Level for entry to the MBBS5. However, they can accept Further Maths as an AS Level in addition to Mathematics at A-Level. Version 1.0 Page 9

St George's Hospital Medical School A-Levels: Candidates must achieve AAB at A\AS Level. All candidates must offer three A-Level subjects and an additional distinct AS Level subject. We do not accept candidates who are taking A-Levels over three years but candidates may re-sit modules throughout years 12 and 13. All candidates must take Chemistry and (Human) Biology to A- Level (or one to A-Level and one to AS Level). At least a grade B must be achieved in these specific subjects. However, if your school average for A-Level is less than points, but your personal average is 60% more than your school average, we will use a formula to consider a lower offer to a minimum of BBBC. You can find your school average at Actual or predicted grades will be taken into consideration when assessing applications. General Studies and Key Skills will not be accepted as qualifying subjects. UKAT required. Maths and Further Maths will not be counted if both are full A-Levels however they will accept Further Maths as an AS Level if A-Level Maths is one of the full A-Levels. Swansea Medical School A-Levels: ABB or equivalent A-Level Biology or equivalent is normally required for entry to all our degree schemes. Chemistry at A-Level is required for Biochemistry, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Genetics and is desirable for Genetics. "For admission to degree courses in Genetics or Biochemistry, I would not count them as separate subjects but would probably take the better grade and count as one A-L. However, Maths is not a required A-Level for these schemes. I do not know what the general policy is for Swansea University." Dr. D. Hugh Jones, Admissions Tutor for Genetics & Biochemistry Version 1.0 Page 10

Warwick Medical School Warwick only offers post grad training to be a doctor and you should be a graduate in: Biological, Health, Natural or Physical Science. They also offer undergraduate training in Dentistry. The essential entry requirements for dentists are enthusiasm, strong determination and a desire to study at Masters Level to further professional development. If you have these qualities then this type of training programme is for you. Students are also expected to: * Hold a license to practise dentistry (BDS or LDS or international equivalent) * Be a current member of the General Dental Council * Have their own indemnity insurance for practising dentistry (including adequate cover for the placement of implants). * Normally have completed one year of vocational training Version 1.0 Page 11
