1 IB Programme Delivery Model OCDSB Consultation Meeting April 23, 2018
2 Merivale HS Context Currently a 7-12 school, English & French Immersion Programs IB DP will be part of a District Program offered at two sites, students meet both OSSD & IB Diploma graduation requirements MHS must be able to support IB Diploma expectations as well as existing programs co-located in the same school.
3 Merivale HS Context Beginning in 2019, students following the IB pathway increase overall enrolment at Merivale by up to 140 students per year, over four years Pre-IB students may represent up to 45% of the projected grade 9 cohort in 2019 The overall 9-12 population is projected to grow to 1300 by 2022, of which approximately 560 (~43%) would be part of the proposed IB Programme.
4 Program Delivery Model Context Two possible delivery models Non-semestered (concurrent / full-year) Semestered Focus: identify a model which best supports the IB learner profile and IB programme expectations as well as existing programs co-located in the same school.
5 Current School Delivery Models Merivale High School 7-8 Program (concurrent / non-semestered) 9-12 Program (OSSD, semestered) Under Consultation: New Offering: IB Programme (pending authorization) pre-diploma Programme, Gr 9 & 10 Diploma Programme, Gr 11 & 12
6 Current School Delivery Models Colonel By Secondary School 9-12 Program, OSSD (concurrent / non-semestered) Pre-Diploma Programme Gr 9 & 10 (concurrent / non-semestered) IB Diploma Programme, Gr 11 & 12 (concurrent / non-semestered)
7 Criteria for Program Delivery Model Which delivery model provides the greatest access to shared / specialized spaces for students in all programs; Which delivery model will best support student choice / flexibility within all programs; Which delivery model best supports the IBO requirements for IB Programme Authorization at Merivale HS.
8 IB Diploma Programme Requirements a. that the schedule provides for the recommended hours for each standard and higher level subject; b. that the schedule provides for the development of the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course over two years; and c. that the schedule respects concurrency of learning in the Diploma Programme. Concurrency of learning means teaching the curriculum in a schedule that consistently exposes the student to all of their subjects over the two years of the programme. This allows students and teachers to make links between experiences in the core program and the academic subjects that are being studied.
9 Student Considerations, OSSD Semester Ontario Program / OSSD (Grades 11 & 12) Gr 11: 7 or 8 courses across 2 semesters Gr 12: 6 to 8 courses across 2 semesters No restrictions on course choices No expectation of concurrency of learning or program Courses have no specific sequencing Exams at the end of each semester (January / June)
10 Student Considerations, IB Diploma - Semester IB Diploma Program (Grades 11 & 12) 6 required subject areas taught across a 2 year period (Gr 11&12) Restrictions on IB course choices to meet concurrency requirements from IBO Gr 11: 7 required IB subjects, timetable space used to meet concurrency requirements Gr 12: 4-6 required IB subjects, no elective options Courses must be sequenced to ensure continuity of learning requirement (IBO) IB Exams held in May (schedule set by IBO) Ontario Exams held in January/June
11 Student Considerations, OSSD - Concurrent / Non-semestered Concurrent/ Non-semestered Structure Ontario Program/OSSD (Grades 11 & 12) Gr 11: 3 compulsory, 4-5 electives Gr 12: 1 compulsory, 5-7 electives Gr 11, minimum 7 courses, up to 8 Gr 12, minimum 6 courses, up to 8 Courses sequenced for continuity of learning Exams held in June (10 day period) set by the school
