Students can apply to earn both VHS credits and Purdue University credits. Interested students must apply to PNC. Additional info on the VHS Website. The Honors/IB course progression is designed for those students who have a high interest level and ability in mathematics. This pathway is recommended for high ability students, as the courses taught at this level are usually fast-paced and highly rigorous. Anyone who plans a college major in mathematics, science, engineering, or related fields should be enrolled in Honors/IB. Students seeking an IB Diploma should enroll in any course that is designated Pre-IB or IB. Both Calculus classes are Standard Level (SL) for IB identification. As a general rule, students should continue in their given pathway as long they are earning a grade of A, B or C. A lower placement than Honors should be considered for a succeeding academic experience if a grade of D or lower has been earned. Additionally, students may be recommended for a lab course and/or team taught course if a teacher believes that additional support will provide the student necessary skills to be successful in their math curriculum. Students with a consistent grade of A in all facets of a course may move into Honors only by teacher recommendation. 1

Prerequisite : Algebra II Students are encouraged to enroll in both Probability and Statistics and Trigonometry as a fourth year of mathematics. This would allow students to earn 8 credits in mathematics towards the academic honors diploma. Students are also encouraged to take a full year of math as a senior in high school as a way to prepare for post-secondary programs and respective placement tests. This course is specifically designed to serve students who have completed Algebra II but do not feel they are ready for the rigor of a Pre-Calculus course. Probability and Statistics includes the concepts and skills needed to apply statistical techniques in the decision-making process. Topics include: (1) descriptive statistics, (2) probability, and (3) statistical inference. Practical examples based on real experimental data are used throughout the course. Students plan and conduct experiments or surveys and analyze the resulting data. Students who participate in a variety of vocational programs would be well served by this set of courses. The Probability and Statistics course will only be offered in the fall semester. This course counts as a Math course for all diplomas. Out-of-class time required: 1 1½ hours/week. 6

7 M51330 Trigonometry (Offered 2 nd Semester Only) 12 1 Cr., 1 Sem. Prerequisite : Algebra II Students are encouraged to enroll in both Trigonometry and Probability and Statistics as a fourth year of mathematics. Trigonometry provides students with the skills and understanding that are necessary for advanced manipulation of angles and measurement. Trigonometry provides the foundation for common periodic functions that are encountered in many disciplines, including music, engineering, medicine, and finance. Students will also advance their understanding of imaginary numbers through an investigation of complex numbers and polar coordinates. Students who participate in a variety of vocational programs would be well served by this set of courses. The Trigonometry course will only be offered in the spring semester. This course counts as a Math course for all diplomas. Out-of-class time required: 1 1½ hours/week. *Note: Students may not earn credit in both Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry as the overlap in the course content for the two classes is significant. CCR Bridge: MATH READY (Math RDY) 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: In grade 11, students who have not passed the Grade 10 Math ISTEP+ (or old Algebra 1 ECA) and have scored below a 45 on the PSAT test OR students who score below proficient on a diagnostic test. Math Ready will include and reinforce the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 and Statistics skills necessary to be ready for an entry-level college math course. This course emphasizes understanding of math concepts rather than just memorizing procedures. Math Ready students learn the context behind the procedure: why to use a certain formula or method to solve a problem, for example. This equips them with higher-order thinking skills in order to apply math skills, functions and concepts in different situations. The course is intended for students who currently have achieved the minimum math requirements for college entry. The content of this course is designed to enhance students math skills so that they are ready for college-level math assignments. It is not designed to prepare students for college-level math in STEM majors. This course counts as a Math course for all diplomas. Out-of class time required per week: 0-1 hour/week 7
