3 REGISTRATION PROCESS HS Counselors present registration information to 8 th grade students MS Counselors meet with 8 th grade students to register for classes Parents check, sign, and return course selection sheet to middle school; be sure to select alternate courses Master Schedule is based on selections by mid March choose wisely! Course selections will be visible immediately in your SIS Parent Account by mid March please review Course verification sheets will be mailed home on May 18 please review Electives and Level Changes will be considered until June 8 th if space is available Schedules are created in June/July/August Schedules will be given out at the Wildcat Welcome in August

5 In English 9, students will: Read a variety of literary genres, focusing on analysis and character study Develop their writing skills for a variety of purposes and audiences Improve their skill in reading, writing, vocabulary development, and knowledge of correct grammar and mechanics Receive support as they develop critical thinking skills they can apply to communicating their ideas

6 While the same skills are taught in regular and Honors English 9, to be successful in an Honors English 9 class students: Should be successful in their 8 th grade English class Should be prepared for an increased workload with out-ofclass reading and writing assignments Should enjoy reading and possess strong reading comprehension skills Should be strong writers in terms of organization, style, grammar, usage, and mechanics Should have a mature attitude toward their studies and a strong work ethic as they will receive challenging assignments (research paper v. product, timed writings, etc.)

7 9 th Grade Social Studies World History & Geography 1 Covers Prehistory (2,500,000 B.C. (B.C.E.) to the European Renaissance 1500 (A.D.) CE Students take the end-of-year World History 1 SOL exam Students study the relationship between the geography and history of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America Prepares students for World History & Geography II World History & Geography 1 Honors Covers Prehistory to 1500 CE Students take the end-of-year SOL exam Students study the relationship between the geography and history of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America More rigorous workload: reading and writing intensive Requires a dedicated work ethic and strong background in reading, writing, and time management skills Focuses on developing and refining high-level critical thinking skills Prepares students for the AP World History curriculum

11 Honors Biology The Independent Research Project is worth 5% of the overall Biology Grade Independent Research Project: Exploravision

18 EXPUNGING MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES To expunge a high school math or World Language grade/credit from your student s permanent transcript you need to notify the middle school during the school year or the high school after the school year ends. Students have until the end of the first nine weeks of their freshman year to request to have a grade expunged. Form IS-104 is available at the middle school and high school or online. Once a course has been expunged it cannot be reinstated.

19 Coursework Taken Outside of FCPS Students who wish to pursue coursework outside of FCPS for credit must have prior written approval from the high school Director of Student Services. Courses taken at private schools must be on the pre-approved list on VCPE.org

21 It s up to you The course selections made now help determine the student s options after high school. Students should take courses that THEY are interested in not what their friends are interested in. Students should challenge themselves each year within reason and be successful.
