INTRODUCTION 2012 PREFERENCES
Expressing Preferences It is time for your son/daughter to think about their future Year 10 & 11 exam courses. They will start in September and will last for two years PREFERENCES The decisions that your son/daughter and you as their parents/guardians make about PREFERENCES are very important. Encourage your son/daughter to collect information, seek advice and be realistic!
Expressing Preferences All Year 9 students will be exploring a careers guidance package in Life Skills over the next few weeks 2010 PREFERENCES Students should select subjects that will relate to their ideas for future education, training and employment and if students are unsure, then a broad range of subjects should be chosen
INFORMATION & GUIDANCE
KS4 Preferences Folder Preference Folder contents: Preference Booklet which contains information on: Preference Calendar English Baccalaureate Core Subjects, Preference Subjects GCSEs, BTECs, Travel 2 Learn and Twilight Course Information Preference Form
How do students choose? Students must look at all subjects before making a decision Students must not fall into the trap of thinking that some subjects are only for boys and some only for girls - this is not true! Students can ask for help and advice from teachers, tutors, Connexions/careers advisor and other members of staff Students need to be realistic about their abilities and match the correct courses for them!
GOOD reasons for choosing a course Students are good at the subject Students think that they will enjoy the course The subjects fit into career ideas and plan The subjects go well with their other choices The subjects will give them plenty of options for the future broad and balanced Students think that they may want to keep on studying it after Year 11
BAD reasons for choosing a course Students know their friends are choosing it People say it is easy there are no easy subjects! Students think it is a good course for a boy or girl Students like the teacher they have now for that subject Students did not have time to research their options properly Students need to make decisions for themselves, they should NOT make decisions that suit their friends

What is the role of the Tutor and Head of House during the Preference process? To offer support and guidance to students if they are finding it difficult to make preference choices To help with any concerns that may arise during the Preference process
Learning Support Some students in KS4 will require Access Arrangements to enable them to demonstrate their potential in GCSE examinations This would typically include students with literacy difficulties or students who needed any form of learning support and this may entitle them to extra time, a reader, a scribe or access to computers to complete papers Students will be identified by the school and parents informed of any arrangements made. However if you feel that your child is eligible for extra support please contact their Head of House or the SENCO Mrs Bowen at school and a Learning Support Help Desk will be available at the end of this evening and at Year 9 Subjects Parents evening on 1 st March
