Support Options Folder Qualifications ~ GCSEs, BTECs, Twilights and Travel 2 Learn English Baccalaureate Exam Support How to choose subject How to complete the Options Form What to do next Student led Subject Road Show
Careers guidance programme in Life Skills Careers and writing Personal Statements for applications on EEL Days Year 9 Annual Reports Options folder Student led Subject Road Show Teacher led subject assemblies during CLL in CREATE Year 9 Parents Evening 31 st January Tutor and Head of House support Options booklet, form, presentation, Travel 2 Learn booklet on the website in Year 9 Letters
Options Booklet which contains information on: 1. Information and guidance of the Options process 2. Core subject information, Options subject information Options Form Parent View Questionnaire
Core Subject: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (Core & Additional or BTEC Science Mr Hall will write home to parents who he suggests take the BTEC Science qualification), Religious Studies (6 GCSEs) PE, Study Skills & Careers, Life Skills Option Subjects: Students choose four additional option subjects, one from each column which are chosen using the Options Form GCSEs are graded: A* - A - B - C - D - E - F - G U GCSEs are seen as the more academic qualification
GCSEs GCSE Art and Design BTEC Art GCSE Applied Business Studies GCSE Child Development GCSE Dance & Dance Leadership Award T2L booklet GCSE D&T Resistant Materials GCSE D&T Food Technology GCSE D&T Graphics GCSE D&T Textiles GCSE Drama GCSE Geography GCSE History GCSE Applied ICT GCSE ICT Computing BTEC ICT CiDA GCSE MFL French GCSE MFL Spanish GCSE Music GCSE PE GCSE Photography GCSE Sociology BTEC Sport GCSE Triple Science Travel 2 Learn: Students choose 2 courses BTEC Work Skills (by invitation only) Twilights: BTEC Performing Arts AS Extended Project Qualification (by invitation only) 27 subject choices the widest choice in the Telford & Wrekin!
Work related qualifications and suitable for a wide range of students Coursework 75%, Controlled Assessment 25% Art, Sports, Performing Arts and ICT- CiDA BTECs are graded: Pass, Merit or Distinction and are equivalent to GCSE grades. C-Pass, B Merit, A Distinction and A* - Distinction* and are equivalent to 2 GCSEs A*-C I strongly suggested that students do not opt to take more than two BTEC qualifications to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum
For pupils who may benefit from studying a reduced number of subjects or who would benefit from additional work on essential skills such as literacy, numeracy and ICT It is offered to a very small number of students who achieve a Level 3 in English during Year 9 letters have already been sent home
One day a week after school BTEC Certificate in Performing Arts and is equivalent to 2 GCSEs A*-C The Twilight courses will only run if there are enough students opting for it minimum 15 students For invited students: AS Level Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) 1 AS Level A*-E
Wide range of exciting GCSE & BTEC courses on one day a week at TCAT, New College, Walford College and several other providers A first and second choice should be selected The T2L booklet is on the school website in Year 9 Letters and at the Subject Road Show Application form completed and interview in March/April Transport is provided
KS3 Levels 5-8 Level 2 Courses KS3 Levels 3-4 Level 1 Courses
If you are attaining on average Level 5s and above in your subjects Level 2 Accounting and Law, Business Studies and Economics, Law and Legal Work, Animal Care, Arts Award, Art and Design, Creative Crafts using Digital Imaging, Creative Digital Media Production, GCSE Dance and Dance Leadership Award Burton Borough School, Building and Construction, Childcare, Engineering, Hairdressing, Hair and Beauty, GCSE, Health and Social Care, Health and Social Care, Hospitality and Catering, GCSE Languages, Programming and Digital Technology, Public Services, GCSE Leisure and Tourism, Outdoor Education, Sport and Sports Leadership
If you are attaining on average Level 3/4s in your subjects Level 1 Animal Care, Art and Design, Arts Award, Art and Design, Performance skills, Performance skills using music, Building and Construction, Childcare Childcare, Motor Vehicle, Hair and beauty, Hospitality and Catering, Asset Languages, Music Technology, Sport and Sports Leadership, Motor Vehicle
The Government believes that schools should offer students a broad range of academic subjects and the English Baccalaureate supports this aspiration It is NOT a new qualification but it recognises students achievements across a core selection of academic subjects and will be issued in the form of a certificate for A*-C passes in the following subjects: English Language, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Language and Geography or History
Students with literacy difficulties or with a physical impairment may be entitled to extra time, a reader or access to computers to complete an exam paper The exam boards have strict rules and regulations and arrangements need to be approved by the exam board The vast majority of such pupils will be identified by the school and parents are informed of any arrangements made. However, if you feel that your child is eligible for extra support please contact the SENCO Mrs Bowen, at school
Students must look at all subjects before making a decision Students must not fall into the trap of thinking that some subjects are only for boys and some only for girls - this is not true! Students can ask for help and advice from teachers, tutors, Connexions/careers advisor and other students Students need to be realistic about their abilities and match the correct courses for them Students must choose a first choice and second choice in each column
Students are good at the subject Students think that they will enjoy the course The subjects go well with their other choices The subjects will give them plenty of options for the future; this can be broad and balanced or a linked to a specific career aspiration Students think that they may want to keep on studying it after Year 11
Students know their friends are choosing it Other students say it is easy there are no easy subjects! Students like the teacher they have now for that subject Students did not have time to research their options properly Students need to make decisions for themselves, they should NOT make decisions that suit their friends
Please take out this form in the Options folder and look at it carefully
The 1 st choice is clearly student s first preferred option but the second choice is equally valuable as some subjects may not run if there are not enough students who opt for it Ensure that an equal amount of time is spent making and discussing both the 1st and 2nd choices If there is a problem making preferred option choices, please bring it to our attention rather than worry about it in silence

At this stage I can not guarantee that all of these courses will run, this will not be known until all students have made their preferred option choices Students are seen by me if the first preferred option subject is not available and we discuss changes which are agreed with parents It is important to make the right choices now but if a student selects a subject and they find that they do not enjoy it in September, option subjects can be swapped before October half term.
Recent Year 9 Progress Reports should be viewed with the Options in mind Read the subject information in the Options Booklet Speaking to students, looking at work and collecting subject flyers at the Subject Road Show Subject Talks in CLL from Wednesday in CREATE Parents Evening on Thursday 31 st January
