2 Academic & Career Planning Academic & Career Planning ( ACP ) is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based vision for post-secondary success, obtained through self exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. ACP is an integral piece of Portage Community School District s comprehensive school counseling program. Students receive ACP services and resources from Grades 5 through 12.

3 Chapter PI-26 Chapter PI-26 is Wisconsin legislation that requires every school district to provide academic and career planning services to pupils enrolled in grades 6-12 beginning the school year. This chapter establishes the requirements for education for employment programs which is to do all of the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Prepare elementary and secondary pupils for future employment. Ensure technological literacy; to promote lifelong learning. Promote good citizenship. Promote cooperation among business, industry, labor, post-secondary schools, and public schools. Establish a role for public schools in the economic development of Wisconsin.

5 Labor Market Statistics Labor market data suggests that Education & Training, Food Service, and Manufacturing are the fastest growing Career Clusters in our area. Information Technology is the fastest growing cluster in Wisconsin. Portage Community School District provides students with the opportunity to participate in work-based learning (Youth Apprenticeships, State-certified and internal co-ops, job shadows, and industry tours), Youth Options and Dual Credit options in these fields. In addition, students have access to Career and Technical student organizations and relevant course offerings. Through these experiences and ACP curriculum, students become familiar with the educational and training requirements for occupations that will fill these needs.

7 Engaging Parents Current Practice: ACP Conferences with ALL students in grades 8 and 11 - parents are invited to attend. Parents are reminded to access Career Cruising through the Parent Portal. Counselors are available to discuss ACP progress in person, by phone or by . Academic grades and test results are available in Infinite Campus. Parent / Teacher Conferences held once per semester - parents are encouraged to connect for teacher feedback to student career goals.

18 Partners in Education Business Partners: PCSD has more than 75 business partners and collaborates with the Columbia County Economic Development Alliance, Portage Chamber of Commerce, and Columbia County Job Center. Our partners help to expose students to career choices, serve as placement for career-based learning, participate in career fairs and panels, facilitate development of employability skills, and some offer college tuition reimbursement. We use the Career Cruising Inspire as a tool for connecting students with new partnerships. Education Partners: Madison College - PHS has an on-site New Student Specialist from Madison College, UW Whitewater and UW Baraboo/Sauk County work collaboratively with PHS Student Services staff on student admissions, dual enrollment, financial aid, college tours, and application events.
