1 Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District Results of Activity Interest Surveys Administered to Students In Grades School Year Prepared by: Matthew Teaford Title IX Coordinator
2 Introduction The school district is required to administer surveys to students in grades 5 to 11 every three years in compliance with Alaska Regulation 4 AAC (Recreational and Athletic Activities), which addresses student interest in extracurricular activities. This report presents a summary of results from activity interest surveys completed by students in three grade level categories: fifth graders, students in middle schools, grades 6, 7, and 8, and high school students in grades 9, 10, and 11. Activities listed on the student surveys may not be inclusive of all the after school clubs and activities which are offered at District schools. Methodology Surveys were created for 5 th grade students, middle schools grades 6, 7, and 8, and for grades 9, 10, and 11 at the high schools. Surveys provide students with a wide range of choices, from athletic activities to specialized clubs such as drama, chess, art, and computers. Students could select as many different activities as they wished. They could also add an activity if it did not appear on the list. Results for the three school levels were compiled and appear in the following tables. Student participation in the survey. Total enrollment during the school year in grades 5-11 was 9099 students. Of this total, enrollment in 5 th grade was 1165 students, enrollment in grades 6-8 was 3782 students, and enrollment in grades 9-11 was 4152 students. A total of 3956 activity/interest surveys were returned which represents 43.5% of enrollment between the 5 th and 11 th grades. Fifth graders returned 523 activity/interest surveys, which is 44.9% of the district enrollment at that grade level. Middle school (6-8 th grade) returned 1796 activity interest surveys, which is 47.5% of the district student enrollment at those grade levels. The 9-11 grade students returned 1637 activity/interest surveys, which represents 39.4% of the district student enrollment at those grade levels. Results from Activity Interest Surveys Page 2 of 13
