3 Sports Philosophy We feel the Athletic P rogram is an integral part of a well-rounded curriculum. In addition to developing physical fitness and well-being, a balanced program of physical activities teaches the virtues of fair play, teamwork and leadership. It is vital to our Athletic Program to encourage every student to participate in co curricular activities. There is a need for every student to have the equal opportunity to participate in a number of sports. We believe the student athlete should have the chance to experience competing, but also the opportunity to develop character, self-discipline and responsibility. It is important for our athletes to strive to do their best academically, which in turn will carry over to the athletic arena. The key to the success of our program is the emphasis placed on the total personal development of each individual student. We believe that a properly supervised Athletic Program is an aid to both scholarship and citizenship. There is a need to help the athlete develop a positive self-image, which instills in them a sense of pride in themselves, their friends and their school. Warning of Inherent Risk/Dangers of Athletic Participation Participation in athletics includes the risk of injury, which may range in severity from minor to disabling to possible death. Although serious injuries are not common in supervised programs, it is impossible to eliminate the risk. Participants can and do have a responsibility to help. Coaches and Trainer Coaches are recruited principally from the faculty, but also from the parent and broader community. The Trainer is a qualified physiotherapist who is paid by the school. Participation Hilton Head Prep provides every student in grades 6-12 the opportunity to participate on an athletic team. Certain teams may require limited participation because of limited facilities, staffing or the nature of the sport.

6 General Information 1. Hilton Head Prep offers a competitive interscholastic athletic program within the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). 2. Student/Athletes wishing to play two varsity sports or a varsity sport and cheerleading during one season, must make a commitment at the beginning of the season to one of the teams in case of a conflict. Each individual case will be determined after the student athlete meets with the coaches involved, Athletic Director and parents. In many cases it still may not be possible for a student athlete to participate on two teams during a given season. 3. Coaches need to be flexible and meet the needs of the team and their players. If an athlete for golf is committed to an outside coach he or she is then required to come to the school's practice at least once a week for the coach to make an evaluation for team positioning. 4. If a student athlete is dismissed from a team or voluntarily leaves a team before the end of a season, he/she will not compete or practice with another team during that season, nor will be allowed to practice with an upcoming season's team before the current season has ended, unless both coaches and the Athletic Director agree to allow the athlete to participate. 5. Transportation: Athletes will travel to and from away competitions in the vehicles provided by the Athletic Department unless prior approval is obtained from the coach. Approval will be granted ONLY when requested by parents. 6. A student must be enrolled at the Hilton Head Prep before she/he may practice with a team. All forms provided by the coach must be completed and signed by the athlete and parents before participation takes place. The forms include physical Agreement for Participation, Health Assessment and Warning of Inherent Risk. 7. Game Ejection: The SCISA rules and guidelines stipulate that if a school athlete is ejected from a contest, he/she will be ineligible to compete in the next game. If the basic rules of sportsmanship are followed, a Hilton Head Prep student-athlete should never be ejected from a contest. In addition, the Athletic Director will review, with the student-athlete or coach, the circumstances surrounding the ejection, and determine the appropriate school response before they are permitted to return to the practice field. Coaches will not permit an ejected player to resume practice until he/she meets with the Athletic Director. The Athletic Director is to be notified by the coach of any ejection immediately after the contest. Any ejection is a serious matter; however, physical violence outside of the rules will be dealt with more severely than most offenses.

7 8. Lightning and Thunder Policy: The lightning policy is in accordance with National Athletic Trainers Association and Beaufort County. We use a thunderbolt detection unit to detect lightning strikes up to 75 miles away. It detects the ETA of a storm and if it is heading in our direction. When lightning is within 30 miles the coaches will be informed that lightning is in the area and they should prepare to come off the field. When lightning is within 12 miles, everyone must take cover indoors or in a vehicle immediately. We will not return to the field until 30 minutes after the last hit on the thunderbolt detection unit within the 12 mile range. Expectations and Responsibilities of Coaches 1. Coaches must keep in mind at all times that they represent themselves s, their teams, the athletic department and the school. A coach's words and actions come under close scrutiny from students, parents, alumni, faculty and the community, and will reflect positively or negatively on the program. 2. Coaches must be positive role models in terms of sportsmanship p and fair play and set a flawless example regarding the use of harmful substances. 3. Coaches must be fair and unprejudiced with players, considering their individual differences, needs, interests, temperaments and aptitudes. 4. Personal appearance, dress and physical condition must be exemplary and project professionalism. 5. Coaches are responsible for all aspects of team discipline. They should address issues promptly and firmly. 6. The following behaviors are unprofessional and will not be tolerated: Profanity: a coach must refrain from the use of profanity and insist that student-athletes do likewise. Physical or verbal abuse of the student-athletes. Use of tobacco products on the field or any other time they are in the presence of the team or team members. Use of alcohol prior to or during practices, games or other athletic team functions. 7. Coaches are expected to maintain self-control at all times, accepting adverse decisions by officials maturely and professionally. Student athletes must learn to accept responsibility for their actions. Blaming officials takes the focus off of individual responsibility and places blame elsewhere.

8 8. Coaches must refuse to disparage an opponent, an official or others associated with sports activities, and discourage gossip and the spreading of rumors. 9. Coaches are responsible for the conduct and care of their team from the beginning to the end of the game or away trips. This includes the job of making sure that bench areas,.dressing rooms and the team vehicles are left clean and in good condition. 10. Coaches are expected to win or lose with dignity and humility. 11. Coaches are to use sound, acceptable and current teaching and coaching techniques and always pre-plan practices and game strategies. 12. Coaches are required to receive CPR certification. 13. Coaches are required to complete concussion test on-line. 14. Coaches will make decisions based on what they believe is best for the team and all student-athletes. The judgment and authority of the coach to make decisions regarding playing time must be respected. It is not appropriate for a parent to question or challenge a coach's decision regarding play calling or team strategy. It is never appropriate for a parent to discuss with a coach the status of another student athlete. (If a parent has a concern and would like to discuss it, he or she should schedule an appointment with the coach. Please do not attempt to contact a coach directly before, during or after a practice or game.) Sportsmanship Code Our goal is to foster respect and fair competition among all athletes, coaches, parents, other spectators and officials. Athletic competition is guided by the following ideals: Participants should: Play hard within the rules of the game. Win with humility; lose graciously; thank officials and congratulate players and coaches after the contest. Serve as host to visitors and direct them to dressing and game locations. Never attempt to injure an opponent. Refrain from taunting, using profanity or gesturing to opponents or spectators. Demonstrate respect towards officials at all times. Only captains should speak to officials about rules' clarification. Judgment calls are accepted without question or demonstration of displeasure. Respect the property and facilities of opponents. Leave locker rooms and bench areas clean and orderly after games. Be positive and supportive towards their coaches and teammates.

9 Coaches should: Serve as a positive role model for their players. Show restraint and respect when dealing with officials. Proper application of the rules may be questioned; judgment calls should be accepted without overt demonstration. Avoid blaming officials for losses. Hold their players accountable for unsportsmanlike behavior. Players violating the above expectations should be removed from the game. Refrain from publicly berating players for mistakes. Reinforce good sportsmanship in practice sessions. Require good dress for games. Maintain order in the locker room. Spectators should: Appreciate and commend good effort and skill no matter which individual or team exhibits it. Treat officials, opposing cheerleaders, players, coaches and fans with respect and courtesy. Refrain from calling opposing players by name, singling out an opposing player for personal criticism, taunting, using profane language or cheers directed at officials, opponents or cheerleaders. Athletic Training Rules The Athletic Training Rules are a vital part of the Athletic Department's program. It is a privilege to participate in athletics, and this privilege is extended to all students provided they are willing to assume certain responsibilities. As representatives of the Hilton Head Prep student body, their team, and their family, student-athletes are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner throughout the school year, particularly during the training period of the sport in which they are participating. Each athlete must discipline himself or herself to be a good citizen and student in order to achieve athletic excellence. In order for a determined course of action for the pursuit of athletic achievement and the character training of our athletes, the following Athletic Training Rules must be understood and agreed to among the School, the athlete and the athlete's parents.

10 1. Tobacco: Any athlete using tobacco in any form will be in violation of the Training Rules. 2. Alcoholic Beverage/Controlled Substance: Any athlete using or in possession of alcoholic beverages or a controlled substance will be in violation of the Training Rules. 3. Arrest: Any athlete who is arrested for a felony or gross misdemeanor as defined by SC law during the season will be in violation of the Training Rules. 4. School Rules: Athletes are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the rules outlined in the Handbook or they will be in violation of the Training Rules. 5. Practice and Games: All athletes are required to be at every practice and contest regardless of injuries unless absent from school due to illness or family emergency or because of participation on a school-sponsored trip. If absent from school for part of a school day, the athlete may not participate in practice or a contest that day without approval from the Athletic Director and the appropriate Division Head. 6. Presentation of Training Rules: The Head Coach of each sport will present the Training Rules to the team prior to the season. Following the presentation of the Training Rules, each student athlete is responsible for following the Training Rules. Violations of the Athletic Training Rules Violations will be reviewed by the Head Coach of each sport. The Head Coach of each sport, in consultation with the Athletic Director (and the Division Head and/or the Headmaster, if appropriate), will determine the penalty for a violation based upon the following criteria, as well as whether the violation is a first or second offense: A violation of a Training Rule may result in being denied the privilege to practice or participate in athletic contests for a specific length of time or an indefinite suspension from the team. Note: an athlete who is suspended from one team may not join another team during the same season. An athlete involved with drugs or alcohol is subject to the guidelines stated in the School's Drug and Alcohol Policy adopted by the Board of Trustees. Questions and Concerns 1. The first line of communication is between the athlete and his/her coach. Parents should encourage their child to assume responsibility of communicating with the coach, including questions about playing time and reporting absences from practice. 2. The second line of communication is between the parent and the coach during a scheduled meeting. The discussion should remain on the individual child and the concern at hand, rather than other team members.

11 3. The final line of communication should be with the Athletic Director, and may involve the athlete, the coach and the student's parents. Coaching Philosophy Middle School Teams: Teach fundamental skills and teamwork. Introduce game strategies. Emphasize development and participation. Students place on a team which competes against other schools or on a developmental team. The development team does not play any games but continues to develop the skills of the individual. We would like to have a balance of winning and participation. Coaches will make every effort for athletes to have quality game time. Prioritize sportsmanship and teamwork. Junior Varsity Teams: Continue to teach fundamental skills and teamwork. Challenge our athletes through practices and competitive games to improve their skill level to enable them to participate at the Varsity level. In competition - play to win with a goal of providing players with quality playing time in as many games as possible. Varsity Teams: Continue to teach individual fundamental and game skills. Give the opportunity for playing time based on a player's skill level, commitment, work ethic and attitude, along with performance and achievement. Place a higher emphasis on responsibility and self-discipline. Emphasize sportsmanship and leadership. Challenge players through hard work, fair play, and maintain their commitment to the program.

12 Training Rules Student/Parent Agreement Violation of any of the Training Rules will result in appropriate disciplinary action taken by the Head Coach and/or the Athletic Director (the Division Head and/or the Headmaster, if appropriate), and may result in dismissal or suspension from the team.
