2 Our topics for tonight 1. What are the similarities and differences between AP and IB? 2. Do IB students have a life? 3. How will my student s schedule be different if he/she is in IB? 4. What can my student be doing to be prepared for IB? 5. What does my student need to do to begin preparing for college entrance testing?
3 New GPA System in HEB
4 Advanced Placement International Baccalaureate Both offer college-level pacing and complexity and require a high level of commitment from the student. Both require that students learn to manage their time and deal with challenges. Both offer possibility for college credit.
5 Advanced Placement Courses are recognized nationally. Over 20 different advanced, collegelevel subject areas offered in our district. Students choose which AP courses to take. One, typically multiple choice/essay, test is given at the end of each AP course. Students may receive college placement credit for test scores. International Baccalaureate Program is recognized internationally. Students apply to the IB program during 10th grade and complete the program (including creativity, activity and service components) over 11th and 12th grade. Internal and external exams in a variety of formats are required for six subjects. Any student who graduates with an IB Diploma will receive 24 hours of credit at any Texas public university.

15 IB Application Process Indicate a commitment on the IB Intent Form when the IB Coordinator visits your 9 th grade class this spring. Attend the 10 th grade student IB information meeting next year (during school day). Complete final application in early December of sophomore year. Attend scheduled individual parent conference with IB Coordinator during sophomore year.

22 IB Summer Academy June 4-21, 2018 Rising sophomores who indicate strong interest in IB can take one greatly accelerated, non-weighted summer class: Health Professional Communications
23 IB Summer Academy $30 per course Rising sophomores are registered after IB students have been registered. Flyers will be available when the IB Coordinators visit your junior high campus.
24 IB Summer Academy Must pass class and final exam with a 70 to receive credit. No absences or tardies will be excused. We cannot honor special requests.
25 IB Summer Academy If a student did not achieve Meets Grade Level on all STAAR EOC tests, he/she must attend the Accelerated Instruction Summer School.
26 IB Summer Academy for Rising 11th and 12th IB Students Foundations of Personal Fitness Health Personal Communication (Speech) Economics Advanced Research and Technical Writing Recommended for rising 12 th grade IB students (not required by state) Offerings are subject to change.
27 College Entrance Examinations Information
28 College Entrance Exam Practice PSAT (practice SAT) anticipated date October 10, 2018 Students are automatically registered by counselors. PSAT October of 11th grade, 2019 Must pay to take (about $20). See counselor to register. This is the PSAT/NMSQT test opportunity (National Merit Scholarship).
29 Superintendent s Scholars Current 9 th grade students who were the top scorers on the 9 th grade (2017) PSAT will receive a letter regarding being named a Superintendent s Scholar. HEB offers two weeks of free, intensive summer test prep, June 4-14, 2018 (no Fridays). AM and PM classes available.
30 Superintendent s Merit Scholars Based on 10 th grade PSAT scores, highscoring students are offered an intensive summer prep opportunity.
31 National Merit Scholar Program Based on 11 th grade PSAT/NMSQT scores, high-scoring students are selected by the National Merit Corp. as National Merit Semi-finalists. This very prestigious honor is awarded to the top scorers in the nation on a state-representational basis. About 15,000 of 1.6 million become Finalists.
32 The REAL THING: SAT and ACT Students are responsible for registering themselves online for the SAT and ACT. May take tests multiple times. Start taking in the spring of 11th grade year. Be sure to ask the counselor about the fee waivers for SAT and ACT tests if your student receives free/reduced lunch.
