Welcome to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall On behalf of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, I would like to welcome all participants, coaches, fans, members of the media and corporate sponsors back to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall for the 2018 New Jersey Individual Wrestling Championships. There were changes this year in the leadership of the NJSIAA. Thank you Steve Timko, former NJSIAA Executive Director and Director in charge of wrestling for your many years of service. I would like to welcome Larry White as the new Executive Director of the NJSIAA and Bill Bruno as the Assistant Director in charge of wrestling. It has been a pleasure working with these men and we wish them and we wish them good luck and continued success in their new positions. Also, I would like to thank my assistant, Jack Kinner, the staff at the NJSIAA, especially Jewel Sellers, the tournament staff as well as the many coaches and officials who help behind the scenes to make this week-end a showcase to be remembered. I would also extend a special thank you to the Convention Center Staff and the Security Staff for their cooperation and assistance. Most importantly, thank you to all the great fans that support the wrestlers and the State Championships. You are the Best. We are continuing our tradition of inviting talented vocalists to open each session with the National anthem. This year we welcome Gianna Caruso, Faith Crossan, Kiley Rotella, and Kelly Wask. Also at the finals, we welcome the New Jersey State Police Honor Guard. It is our privilege to have them and our outstanding vocalists contribute to the success of our tournament. Thank you. As you look at the wrestling area you notice 7 individuals tending to the wrestlers with bloody noses, injury examinations and observing for the possibility of concussions all for the safety of the wrestlers. These very important people who also spend long hours honing their skills for the benefit of our athletes are the trainers. Often forgotten or taken for granted. We would like to recognize their contributions to the success of our tournament and say thank you. You are not forgotten. There has been changes in the wrestling world both on and off the mat. The new out of bounds rule relative to earning back points and pins was initiated this year. The general opinion has been positive but many fans and coaches welcome further change. New uniform styles were approved to try and make it more attractive to the athletes, hopefully to increase participation. Also, New Jersey is in the second year of the reorganization of the Regions and Districts. Although the reviews have been mixed, as per the Rules and Regulations, the reorganization will be revisited again in the spring and the Regions and Districts will be realigned using the same method as developed for last year s reorganization. The method used is described in the Wrestling Rules and Regulations under section F of the District Regulations. Another addition to the Finals of the tournament initiated last year was the opportunity for the parents of the State Finalists to be mat side during their child s match. This initiative has been favorably received and will be continued this year. In the past parents have been permitted to take podium pictures of the award winners. We will still continue that procedure with one addition, the professional NJSIAA photographer and press will take their pictures first and then the parents. The Wrestling Committee continues to work with the Coaches Association to look for ways to improve not only the tournaments but wrestling in general. It welcomes for consideration and evaluation, suggestions from all coaches and fans. If Coaches have suggestions for additions or changes they would like reviewed they should either contact their Region President or send any suggestions to me via . The Wrestling Committee recommends that coaches and wrestlers adhere to an appropriate dress code at both dual meets and tournaments. We hope that all school districts will enforce respectful attire which reflects well on New Jersey Wrestling.

Each year I include an update from the National Wrestling Coaches Association s Executive Director, Mike Moyer. This year it is included on a separate page. Please be sure to read his review. Lastly, I want to congratulate all wrestlers and coaches who are participating in the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships this year. 8 National Wrestling Coaches Association On behalf of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Board of Directors and our president, Coach Tom Ryan at The Ohio State University, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the NJSIAA and all of its member wrestling coaches/programs for entrusting the NWCA to provide so many important services each year such as automated seeding for the post season, etc. I am thrilled to report on some very encouraging vital signs for amateur wrestling: Since 1999, the NWCA has helped to establish 193 new college wrestling programs (42 of which are women s intercollegiate teams). One of the fastest growing high school sports in America is girls wrestling (over 14,000 participants and state championships in 6 states). Many of the state high school wrestling championships for boys are among the largest revenue generating championships (in each respective state). As much as we want to celebrate the growth of high school and college wrestling, we never want to lose sight of the importance of sustaining our current and newly established wrestling programs. Nobody plays a more important role in the future of our sport than the head coach at every level. With this in mind, the NWCA administers a FREE and comprehensive CEO Leadership Academy for scholastic and collegiate wrestling coaches across America. This program is uniquely designed to promote best practices for improving recruitment and retention of wrestlers. It also helps coaches strengthen their CEO/entrepreneurial skills while highlighting the need to be fully committed to an educationally based coaching philosophy. We plan on hosting a scholastic coach s academy in New Jersey this year so stay tuned for more information to come. Speaking about educationally based coaching philosophies, I would be remiss if I didn t mention the recent merger of Wrestlers in Business Network (WIBN) with the NWCA. For those of you who might be unfamiliar with WIBN, it is an operating unit within the NWCA and it is designed to encourage wrestlers to do business with wrestlers and/or to inspire wrestlers to hire wrestlers. If you have not already done so, please go to to learn more. We currently have strong chapters in Princeton and Philadelphia. In fact, the Princeton Chapter hosted the 2017 NWCA All Star Classic in November and raised an unprecedented $200,000 in sponsorships in support of the men and women who participated. The revenues generated from the event have been donated back to various local wrestling causes such as Beat the Streets and the local New Jersey College wrestling programs. In conclusion, our sport is so fortunate to have the rich wrestling history and tradition in New Jersey. You have set the bar high and continue to represent the gold standard in our sport. Good luck at your state championships and best wishes to the graduating high school seniors in the future endeavors (be sure to make Wrestlers in Business Network a part of your future). Growing wrestling together, Mike Moyer Executive Director National Wrestling Coaches Association PO Box 254 Manheim, PA

When Vinnie was named Chief Referee for the State of New Jersey 4 years ago, and with that title comes with the task of being the Wrestling Assignor for the Sectional, District, Regional, and State Wrestling Tournaments. One of Vinnie s greatest achievements is being the Founder of the Referee Evaluation Process. Each NJSIAA Wrestling Referee has been assigned a number which is located on the back of their Official s Shirt. The New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association is the only Officials group that has this number system in the State. With this process he also formed a group of over 40 Evaluators throughout the State of NJ. This is the Major Reason why New Jersey Officials are considered the Best in the Country. Vinnie along with this long list of accolades also assigns the officials for 70 different New Jersey Schools. With the evaluation process fully in place it gives Vinnie a large picture on where we need to work to improve as an organization. Vinnie has done an enormous amount of work to help our officials become the best. Vinnie is married to his lovely Wife Lorraine and has 3 daughters, Kandice, Mia and Shea. 34 2017 State Finals Articles A.C. WINS IT IN A.C.: DELBARTON S ANTHONY CLARK CAPTURES 106-POUND STATE TITLE By JJ Conrad NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY Make it 1-for-1 for A.C. in A.C. Delbarton s Anthony Clark shined brightest on the state s biggest stage at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Sunday, as the highly touted freshman captured the 106-pound state title with a 4-2 decision over St. Joseph s Sammy Alvarez. Growing up, you always want to be the guy on the big stage wrestling here, said Clark, the bracket s No. 6 seed who did all his scoring with a four-point move with 30 seconds left in the first to take an early 4-0 lead. Now my first time here, I win it all. It s amazing and I can t believe it. A District 9 and Region 3 champion, Clark grinded his way to the 106-pound title in Atlantic City, winning all five bouts by decision none by more than four points. A cousin of former Hanover Park star Anthony Olivieri -- who took sixth at 170 pounds last year -- Clark earned a trip to the final with a gritty, 3-2 overtime decision over Bergen Catholic s Nick Kayal in the semifinals. Alvarez, the No. 4 seed, upset the bracket's No. 1 seed, Gateway's Dante Mininno in the other semifinal. I definitely get yelled at a lot by my coaches to score more points, Clark said with a laugh moments after receiving a standing ovation from the Delbarton faithful occupying Section 119 inside the historic Boardwalk Hall. But I like getting out there and doing what I do. I like the close matches. I never get out of my position. It s how I win. And it s now how he became a state champion. I m extremely proud of myself, said Clark (39-2), whose road to the final also included wins by decision over Long Branch s Ryan Zimmerman, 2-0, in the first round, Belvidere s Quinn Melofchik, 5-1, in the Round of 16 and Queen of Peace s Will Grater, 7-3, in the quarterfinals. A freshman coming down here and taking first out of, what, 32 kids? It s an amazing feeling. I knew I had to prevail and prove that I was better than everybody else here. Alvarez cut a four-point deficit in half with a reversal midway through the second period, though that would the closest Clark would let the St. Joseph star get.

2017 State Finals Articles GATEWAY S ANTONIO MININNO WINS THRILLER OVER BC FROSH ROBERT HOWARD IN 113 FINAL By Bill Evans NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 For the last three years, Gateway/Woodbury junior Antonio Mininno has been one of the best wrestlers in the state at being able to find his way out of a tough spot on a wrestling mat. Over the last year, Mininno has put his name among the best wrestlers in the state, period. He proved both of those statements to be correct on Sunday as Mininno defeated Bergen Catholic standout freshman Robert Howard, 4-3, in a tiebreaker to win the 113-pound state title. On Thursday night, he texted me and said I m winning this thing, I have no pressure, I ve never felt better in my life, said Gateway coach Jim Rutter. Mininno s twin brother, Dante, took fourth at 106 pounds after losing in the semifinals on Saturday night. On Sunday, Antonio got one for his practice partner and best friend. He s my third coach in the corner, said Antonio Mininno. With the score tied at 1, Howard shot in and lifted Mininno up off the whistle in the sudden-victory overtime period. Mininno ended up hanging upside-down on Howard s back. Howard eventually brought him down to the mat, but Mininno somehow held on to Howard s ankle for almost an entire minute to set the tiebreaker. I knew I couldn t panic, I just had to move on the bottom, said Antonio Mininno. Me and Dante do battles in the room, keep scrambling. I just had to keep fighting, fighting, fighting and I pulled it out. Said Rutter: I couldn t believe the position those guys were in, those funk positions. Howard is just as crazy as Antonio, and Antonio just hung on to his foot or we re taking second place. He s Superman. He s unbelievable. He does that every day in practice. Ant s a little crazier than Dante. He throws everything out the window. Him and Dante practice on a trampoline in their backyard. When the Mininnos are wrestling, the circus is in town. They re both high-wire acts. Howard escaped quickly in the first 30-second period, but a locked-hands call on the Bergen Catholic freshman in the second period tied the match and Mininno hit a reversal for a 4-2 lead. At a restart with six seconds to go, Mininno let Howard up and backed away, waiting for the clock to wind down so he could celebrate a decade-long dream. I used to sit in the stands and say I should be here, one day I ll be here, said Mininno. I m going to win this thing and here I am. Mininno revealed he had an undisclosed injury before the season that not only threatened his season but also his career. I was almost done forever, I just prayed about it, said Mininno. Mininno is the second state champion in Gateway history. Greg Rizzo won the only other title in I love to bring it back to a small school, it s an honor to win it for myself, God, my coaches, teachers who help me with school work, said Minnino. I did it.

2017 State Finals Articles GLORY DAYS: DELBARTON S PAT GLORY CAPTURES ELUSIVE STATE TITLE WIN OVER ARAGONA By Patrick Lanni NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY About time. After two years of heartbreak, Delbarton s Pat Glory finally put an end to a lifelong search for a state title. With a 3-1 win over Pope John s JoJo Aragona in the 120-pound state final Sunday at Boardwalk Hall, Glory finally got over the hump after losing in back-to-back finals the last two seasons. Glory, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country at his weight, was on a mission all season long to prove he was the banner man for high school wrestling in New Jersey. He solidified that Sunday. I m a state champ, Glory said. It s finally over. It s something that s been hanging over my head my whole life. Never as a kid. Never in middle school. Not until Sunday. It took two years of devastation for Glory to finally take the top step on the podium. The state title was a big thing to do, Delbarton coach Bryan Stoll said. It was something he needed to get done. Glory ran through the 120-pound bracket in dominant fashion before meeting Aragona. Glory pinned both of his opponents Friday before winning by major decision and technical fall in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Aragona gave Glory his toughest test. JoJo wrestled really well, Glory said. I have to give him props for that. I was a little upset it was only 3-1, but at the end of the day, I got my hand raised. Glory finished 43-0 this season. He won his second straight Beast of the East title and shot to the top of the national rankings after not starting the season in top 20. After losing at Fargo, he threw his shoes in the garbage, Stoll said. He went to a dark place. They took him out of the national rankings and he felt disrespected. When school started he wasn t in the national rankings. Now, he s No. 1. I can t imagine anybody has ever done that in this sport. Stoll said it s a tribute to his drive. Something clicked in him, Stoll said. You see kids that aren t that experienced get good really fast, but he was really good and his jump was through the roof. It s really incredible to witness somebody s confidence get going and take it to that level.

2017 State Finals Articles HANOVER PARK SOPHOMORE NICK RAIMO TAKES EXTRA STEP, WINS 126-POUND STATE TITLE By Matt Chando For NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY Nick Raimo had enough of being second. He spent the last year making sure he wouldn t have to feel that way again. The Hanover Park sophomore put the finishing touches on a dominating run at the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Wrestling Championships with a 10-4 victory Sunday in the 126-pound final vs. Kyle Slendorn of Howell. Before the tournament started, I knew I was coming in here to leave my mark and I wanted to dominate every single match, and not leave anything close, Raimo said. I think I did just that. After losing in last year s 120-pound final, Raimo won by pin, technical fall and a pair of major decisions before Sunday s six-point decision. The sophomore, who is ranked No. 1 in the state according NJ.com weight class rankings, No. 5 in the country according to FloWrestling and No. 6 nationally by InterMat, was not taken down through five tournament bouts. Last year, I fell just a little short and that definitely made me work harder for today and for this moment right now, so this feels great, Raimo said. Coming off the loss in the final last year, he had a little fire in him this year, Hanover Park coach James LaValle said. The plan was get after it the whole time, create the action to use what he s good at to score points. Raimo had four takedowns in the final, three of which came in the first period, in addition to a secondperiod reversal. I said before (the tournament), I don t game plan, guys have to game plan to wrestle me, Raimo said. I go out and wrestle my style and do what I do best and just score as many points as I can. It is Hanover Park s eighth individual state championship and fourth in the last five years. The last title came in 2015 by Gerard Angelo at 106. Two Hornet wrestlers have won multiple state championships Anthony Cefolo (2012, 2014) and LaValle (1995, 1997, 1998). It s probably safe to assume Cefolo and LaValle will have some company soon. I don t really feel pressure, I just love the atmosphere and the (crowd) and everything about this, Raimo said. Slendorn used a pair of upsets in the quarters and semis to reach the final. The Howell junior knocked off second-seeded and No. 2 Shane Metzler of West Morris Central with a 5-4 decision, then avenged an early-season loss in the semis with a 7-2 victory over Paulsboro s Anthony Duca. Howell and 220-pounder Eric Keoesseianwere the first finalists from Howell since 2008 when Joey Langel won a state championship. While a two-time state qualifier, this was his Slendorn's first trip to the podium. I m as happy as I could be right now, Slendorn said. I ended up not winning, but I came in second in the state. You can t be mad about that from going to not placing last year to being second in the state. Now, Slendorn knows he ll go from the hunter to the hunted. You go back to square one, next year is a whole new year, Slendorn said. You see it every year at the state tournament, top seeds getting knocked off. Next year I could be a top seed, but it doesn t matter. This year I was the upset. Next year, I don t want to be the one getting upset.

2017 State Finals Articles KINGWAY S QUINN KINNER DOMINATES IN 132-POUND FINAL By Bill Evans NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 Kingsway Regional High School s Quinn Kinner finished fifth in the State Wrestling Championships as a freshman and third as a sophomore. This year, the junior took the natural progression with a dominating 5-0 victory over New Milford s John Burger in the 132-pound final, becoming Kingsway s first state champion since Brandon Becker in Absolutely my whole life, said Kinner when asked how long he had dreamed of Sunday s moment. I ve been around it my whole life. I ve been wrestling since I was 4. My dad wrestled, my uncles wrestled, my grandparents wrestled. Everybody in my family wrestles. My uncle (assistant tournament director Jack) runs the tournament, so I grew up down on the floor. I saw how happy kids are when they win. I ve always known I could do it, I knew I had potential. You dream about it every day, every night but I could never have dreamed how amazing this feels. Kinner scored an early takedown and controlled the match from there. He started the third period on top which has been his go-to position and rode out Burger the final two minutes with a set of back points thrown in for good measure. In the semifinal, Kinner used a near-fall with a tie score in the third period to beat Pope John s Robert Garcia, 5-2. All season I ve been working on top, trying to break kids, see them break, feel them break, push them until they can t go any more, said Kinner. I can go six minutes at a pace not many kids can go. I knew it was there for me. That was where I really wanted to be. I knew I wanted to get that first takedown, you get on top and it s just exciting. You know that match is there, you re in it and you can win that thing. Kinner s brother, senior Trace, took fourth at 138 pounds earlier in the day. Last year, Quinn wrestled up a weight class so Trace could compete at his natural weight, and this year Trace returned the favor. My brother s been my practice partner since we were little kids, said Quinn. We ve fought over wrestling, hugged over wrestling, cried over wrestling, bled over wrestling. Sharing it with him (and my dad) was the best feeling in the world. Kinner came into the tournament as the second seed behind Brick Memorial s Gianni Ghione, who had beaten Kinner, 6-5, in the final after the Kingsway junior rallying for a dramatic win in the third period. Kingsway coach Mike Barkian said he was hoping Kinner would see Ghione again because he knew how much his wrestler had improved since December. Early in the season, Kinner also placed second in the Beast of the East and had a win over 138-pound third-place finisher Robert Cleary of Bound Brook. I ve known since early January what was going to happen here, said Barikian. Quinn s a special wrestler. I don t think he has a weak point. Really his goal should be to be the No. 1 wrestler in the country. He learns incredibly quickly, he s improving on small, incremental things, but the way it improves his level has been exciting to watch.

2017 State Finals Articles OCEAN TOWNSHIP S BENNER HITS HUGE THROW, SHOCKS BC S ANGELO IN 138-POUND FINAL By Joe Zedalis NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY It was the move that came out of left field. Ocean Township s Jake Benner, his offense rendered non-existent by a seasoned opponent, hit the biggest move of his wrestling life in the 132-pound State Wrestling final at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday. Benner, a once-beaten junior, hit a five-point pancake that provided the decisive points in a 7-6 victory over two-time placewinner Gerard Angelo of Bergen Catholic before a stunned crowd. I think it was a pancake, but I have never hit a big move like that in my entire life, said Benner, who finished the season He (Angelo) was tough on top. He had a nice tilt. On his feet, he controlled the ties and was in on my legs. I just never saw that coming. Neither did Angelo, a former state champion. Angelo was leading 6-2 and was headed for the top of the podium. That kid (Angelo) wrestles free style, he s been here before, he was down on his knees and he looked comfortable out there, said Ocean Township head coach Cip Apicelli. But I said this on Saturday, when you re comfortable, we re more comfortable. You can never count our kid out. He is dangerous from everywhere. Everywhere Sunday was a spot just between the circles. He (Angelo) was down both knees, I had two hooks under then I switched to one hook over, Benner said. It was there for maybe a second, Apicelli said. He hit it. Angelo crash-landed on his back with 1:28 left in the third period. He bridged and swam for the edge until the hold was broken with five seconds left in the bout. I m trying to add five (points) to what I saw on the scoreboard, but I couldn t add, Benner said. I m looking at Cip to give some idea of what the score was, but he wasn t any help. I thought at some point, he had to be pinned, Benner said. My greatest fear was he got out of bounds, got a restart and we had to try and ride him for 30 seconds, Apicelli said. The final five seconds was heart-stopping enough. Angelo took a short injury timeout before the final restart. I asked the coaches if I should go to a merkle, Benner said. They not to and just do what I do. He (Angelo) dropped down and I went to the merkle. Angelo hit flying gramby roll with Benner hanging on for dear life. That was the longest five seconds of my life, Benner said. Angelo, the top-seeded, who finished the season 31-3, scored a powerful takedown with 1:13 left in the first period and then then tilted Benner for a 4-1 lead after the first two minutes. Benner escaped to open the second period, but Angelo countered with a second takedown to make it 6-2. Angelo, knowing Benner s prowess on top, took neutral in the third. We never got to be on top and they did the smart thing in the third, Apicelli said. All it took was one lapse. Benner capitalized and left Atlantic City a state champion. I don t know what it feels like to be a state champ because it hasn t set it yet, Benner said. It would, soon enough.

2017 State Finals Articles LENAPE VALLEY S PALUMBO CAPTURES PROGRAM S FIRST STATE TITLE WITH 145-POUND VICTORY By Andrew Koob For NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 Nick Palumbo didn t think about the history he had just made when the whistle blew to signal the end of the 145-pound final. The only thing that concerned the top-seeded Lenape Valley senior was embracing coach Doug Vetter after defeating second-seeded Ricky Cabanillas of DePaul with a 5-3 decision. I just wanted to go hug my coach and celebrate with him, share that experience with him, Palumbo said. It didn t sink in for Palumbo what he had just accomplished as a result of his victory. He capped his senior season off with a 46-0 record this season and a state championship, the first ever in the program s history. The amount of work going into it is unbelievable, Palumbo said. :The amount of hours, all of the camps and tournaments that I ve been to, it s all part of it and everything paid off. I m sure it means a lot for everyone and for me I m a state champion, that s all I have to say. Palumbo took the lead early in the second period with an escape at 1:33. A last-second takedown pushed his lead to three points going into the final two minutes. Another takedown extended Palumbo's lead but a Cabanillas reversal with 14 seconds made Palumbo go on the defensive for the remaining time. I just wanted to ride him as hard as I could, Palumbo said. And when he reversed me I was just going to chill on bottom and try not to give up any points. Even just minutes after securing the state title, Palumbo was reminiscent of his time with the program. Palumbo, who will wrestle at the University of Buffalo next season, It s bittersweet, ending my career but I can t put into words how much it means to be a state champion," Palumbo said. "It s 10 times better (going out on top). I knew it was always a possibility, I just had to step up. Last year I figured I could compete with these guys and I worked over the summer to get better than them and that s what happened. Cabanillas, a transfer from Bergen Catholic, made the most of his first appearance in Atlantic City. The sophomore won his first match in a 13-0 major decision then needed a fall in sudden victory to advance to the semifinals. He reached the finals with a 4-1 decision over Garrett Beam of Queen of Peace in the quarterfinals, followed by a 3-0 decision against Nicholas Santos in the semifinals.

2017 State Finals Articles BOUND BROOK S STEPHAN GLASGOW WINS BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS, BACKFLIPS FAREWELL By Patrick Lanni NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 Stephan Glasgow s career went head over heels with one final farewell to Boardwalk Hall. The Bound Brook senior will go down as a two-time state champion, three-time finalist and a guy who kept things interesting all the way until his final backflip. This was probably the greatest moment in my life, Glasgow said. Everyone was telling me he was going to be a four-time state champion, that I wasn t smart enough to beat him, but I kept my positioning and held him off. Glasgow got the decisive takedown with 25 seconds to ensure a 3-2 win over Bergen Catholic junior Shane Griffith. Griffith came into Sunday s 152-pound state final as a two-time state champion trying to remain on course to join an exclusive list of four-time champions. Glasgow denied that. He was aggressive in a calculated match and out-positioned Griffith at the edge for the match-winning takedown. It was scary, Glasgow said. He was hard to score on. I had to use my strength to bring him back in. The refs didn t give it to me at first, but they talked it over and gave it to me. As a freshman, Glasgow missed weight at Regions. He lost to Brick Memorial s Alec Donovan in the 145- pound final as a sophomore a defended his 152-pound title Sunday. Following his celebratory backflip in front of 10,087 fans, Glasgow put it all in perspective. I have to give a shoutout to all the people that supported me, Glasgow said. Every year was worth it. After freshman year, I didn t think I was ever going to be here after I missed weight. Once I got here, I knew I had to leave my mark. Glasgow, who will wrestle at Rutgers next season, ended his career with a record of He was 36-1 this season with two big wins over Griffith

2017 State Finals Articles NO DOUBT ABOUT IT: BOUND BROOK S LEWIS PROVES HE S TOP DOG AT 160 IN BATTLE OF CHAMPS By JJ Conrad NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY Paramus' Kyle Cochran talked the talk. Bound Brook's Mekhi Lewis walked the walk. And now it's the quiet, mild-mannered Lewis that ends his career as a two-time state champion. In one of two championships bouts Sunday at Boardwalk Hall featuring a pair of returning state champions, the Bound Brook senior star proved he's the top dog in the state at 160 pounds with a 5-3 decision over Cochran. This coming one week after Cochran, last year's 160-pound champ, guaranteed a repeat while adding he would win by at least major decision in every bout in the process. "Yeah, I saw what he said," said Lewis, last year's champion at 145 pounds who was named this year's Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler along with Ocean 138-pounder Jake Benner. "My thoughts were just like, 'Don't worry about it. He's just talking. Let me just wrestle.' That's all I could do, just wrestle. At the end of the day when you go out on the mat, it's just me and him. All I was worried about was wrestling." "I just kind of brushed it off. People always talk. People always have something to say. If he wants to be that type of person, he can be. But that's not my style." What is style is, though, is to dominate. Prior to defeating Cochran, it was Lewis -- bound for Virginia Tech -- who stormed through the bracket winning by pin in the first three rounds and by major decision, 16-4, over Piscataway's Michael Petite in the semifinals. Lewis, who capped his senior season with a 47-0 record, never trailed Sunday against Cochran and was in control from the start. He jumped out to a 2-0 lead 30 seconds into the first. Up 2-1 in the second, Lewis escaped to take a 3-1 lead. A Cochran escape early in the third cut the deficit to one, but Lewis all but sealed the deal with a takedown with 50 seconds left to take a 5-2 advantage. "Mekhi wanted to prove he is the best," Bound Brook coach Shaun Cleary said. "He wanted to go out and prove to everybody that he is the guy. That he's the guy to beat in this weight class. And that's exactly what he did. To win one state title is special. But to win two state titles, that puts you in a different category." Lewis was the only wrestler in this year's record field of 448 wrestlers who earned a spot on the podium for the fourth straight year. Prior to winning state titles in 2016 and 2017, Lewis took third at 138 as a sophomore and seventh in the state at 132 as a freshman. "This is where we wanted to be," Cleary said. "We didn't want to be here against anybody else. This is the matchup we wanted. State champ against state champ and a chance to prove who's the best. Two champs entered, but only one could come out as a two-timer. That's all Mekhi wanted." Lewis also capped a historic night for Bound Brook, becoming the third individual state champion this season along with Stephan Glasgow at 152 (defeated two-time state champion Shane Griffith of Bergen Catholic) and George Walton at 182 (defeated Sam Wustefeld of Scotch Plains-Fanwood). "For all three to come out on top and all three being seniors, that's really special," Cleary said.

2017 State Finals Articles DELSEA S BILLY JANZER WINS MANDARINO REMATCH, CAPTURES 170-POUND STATE WRESTLING TITLE By Bill Evans NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 Delsea Regional High School junior Billy Janzer said after his 170-pound semifinal Saturday he woke up every morning the past few months thinking about his December loss to Don Bosco s Dominick Mandarino. On Monday morning, that nightmare will be over as he accomplished a lifelong dream Sunday, beating Mandarino, 3-2, in the State Wrestling Championships when he escaped with two seconds left in the ultimate tiebreaker. I can t wait to wake up tomorrow and think I m a state champ, said Janzer. It s going to be awesome. Janzer lost to Mandarino, 6-4, at the South Jersey Duals and knew he would need to be more cautious the second time around. It had the crowd at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall a little restless as Janzer who scored 27 points in a quarterfinal win but just six total in the semifinals and finals and Mandarino opted for a conservative strategy and few shots. Janzer won the semifinal over Woodbrudge's Bryan McLaughlin, 3-1, in overtime. Last time (Mandarino) got in on quite a few shots off the open tie, said Delsea coach Greg Sawyer. Our approach was to stay low and take away that open space and make contact, then wrestle. We spent a lot of time working on making contact to take away his offense. Janzer won the toss and escaped to start the second period, meaning he would have choice in the ultimate tiebreaker. Manadrino matched his escape, and they traded escapes in the tiebreaker. However, Janzer did not escape easily in the ultimate tiebreaker. On the second restart with 13 seconds left, Janzer tried crawling forward and standing up but Mandarino held on as the wrestlers headed for the line. Finally with two seconds left, Janzer spun out as Mandarino tumbled out of bounds. Janzer said he couldn t even recall how he escaped the Bosco senior s grip. Before we went back to the middle and reset I saw there were 13 seconds left and I felt I could get out in that amount of time, said Janzer. Once we got close to the edge, I started to get a little nervous. I had to do something to get out and score that point. I had to get it done. Said Sawyer, who wasn t happy with Mandarino taking injury time before the ultimate tiebreaker: I knew my guy would be tough and keep on coming, but it doesn t guarantee you a point. I m glad he got it. Janzer has been projected as a future state champion at Delsea since he s been in the program s midget program. To live up to what everybody thought of me, I m very satisfied right now, said Janzer, a Rutgers commit. I m glad I showed what I can do.

2017 State Finals Articles BOUND BROOK S WALTON MAKES DREAM COME TRUE WITH 182-POUND STATE TITLE By Andrew Koob For NJ Advance Media March 05, 2017 George Walton always dreamed of taking his place at the highest point of the podium. That dream became reality Sunday in the 182-pound final as the second-seeded Bound Brook senior used a late takedown to capture the gold medal with a 5-4 decision over ninth-seeded Sam Wustefeld of Scotch Plains-Fanwood. It felt like everything I worked for came true, Walton said. I ll go to sleep tonight as a state champion and tomorrow I get to wake up a state champion. That championship vision almost didn t come to fruition for Walton, who made it all the way to the semifinals in last season s 170-pound division before leaving Atlantic City with a fourth-place medal. Everyone could tell I was a little nervous when I went to double overtime my last match, Walton said. I almost gave up a couple takedowns but I managed not to was able to pull out the win. Walton and Wustefeld went back and forth in the opening 1:30 with neither getting the upper hand. Both wrestlers ramped up the aggression with Walton ultimately getting the takedown with 13 seconds left in the first period. Wustefeld started to make a comeback in the second period, recording a takedown with under a minute left to bring the deficit down to one point. A Wustefeld escape tied the bout, setting up Walton s takedown with 18 seconds left in the third period. Wustefeld was able to add another point with an escape with three seconds remaining but it wasn t enough to catch Walton. I wasn t worried. I knew I could take him down, Walton said. The takedown that he got, I m not sure if that should have been two (points). But when I was snapping him and getting those shots in, I knew I could take him down. Wustefeld came into the finals with plenty to prove after losing in the first round at last year s state tournament in the 170-pound division. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood junior had already made his name known with Saturday s upset over top-seeded Shane Sosinsky of Northern Highlands with a fall in 7:32, followed by a 4-3 tiebreaker decision against fifth-seeded L.J. Castellano of Delbarton. Wustefeld was also seeking to be the last Scotch Plains-Fanwood wrestler to win a state championship in 50 years. The last Raiders wrestler to take the gold medal on the state level was Rudy Lanza, who won the 136-pound division in 1967.

2017 State Finals Articles DELAWARE VALLEY S KYLE LIGHTNER COMPLETES TRANSFORMATION, WINS 195-POUND STATE WRESTLING TITLE By Matt Chando For NJ Advance Media March 05, :05 PM ATLANTIC CITY Delaware Valley Regional s Kyle Lightner aced the biggest test of his wrestling career Sunday at the finals of the NJSIAA/Rothman Institute State Wrestling Championships. The third-seeded junior defeated Collingswood senior and ninth-seed Michael Taulane, 5-1, to capture the 195-pound state title. Yet according to his mother, Lightner still had work left to do Sunday night. My mom texted (Delaware Valley coach Andy Fitz) before I got here that I have to do my homework, Lightner said. I have some physics and English to do. Lightner didn t even seem too upset about potentially hitting the books after winning a state title. Perhaps because hard work and practice are things he s grown to appreciate thanks to his work in the wrestling room. He wasn t always into the practice end, but in the last three years he s devoured practice, Fitz said. He s watching film all of the time. He goes to (wrestling) clubs at night. And that has been a total 180 from coming through the system when he wanted to maybe just compete every weekend and not necessarily practice during the week. That (change) was transformative and here we are as a junior. Lightner (41-2, No. 2 in NJ.com weight class rankings) began and ended the match with takedowns and neutralized the explosive Taulane (40-3, ranked No. 6 in state) with tie-ups and wrist control. I wasn t really offensive like I usually am, but I was happy to keep my controlling tie-ups and I didn t let him have a bit of offense, Lightner said. He was a real strong boy, so I had some trouble working my Russians and getting to his legs. But I knew once he took a shot on me, I have great hips and I was just going to do that inside hook and get behind him. Once he tied (Taulane s) wrist up and slowed his offense, he couldn t touch his legs, Collingswood coach Dechlin Moody said. He wrestled smart. (Taulane) couldn t get his hand free and that took away his motion and his speed. (Lightner) is tough. He deserves the win. Lightner is Delaware Valley s ninth state champion and first in 10 seasons (Dan Kelly, 2007). It feels amazing to be up on the wall with the DelVal legends, the people we always look up on the wall and want to be like, Lightner said. I wanted to be like (two-time state champion) Jamie Wicks, so I m coming for another one next year. Taulane is the most successful Collingswood wrestler at the state tournament in 25 years, when John Koss won his second of back-to-back state titles, and the first Panther to place at states since He s a senior, so there s no tomorrow, so you can t bring that into (what you say after the match), said Moody, who placed fourth in I just told him I was proud of him. He s got bragging rights forever (on me).

2017 State Finals Articles HOWELL S ERIC KEOSSEIAN PINS DON BOSCO S ACCIARDI TO WIN 220-POUND STATE TITLE By Joe Zedalis NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, 2017 ATLANTIC CITY Eric Keosseian literally heard the words in his sleep Saturday night. Two legs behind his one, two legs behind his one. From the moment Keosseian, the Howell senior, learned he would meet Peter Acciardi of Don Bosco Prep in the 220-pound state wrestling final, the Howell coaches hammered home the counter to Acciardi s move of choice, the merkle. All of last night, all morning, Keosseian said of the tutoring. Two legs behind his one, two legs behind his one. So when Acciardi, the top seed at 220 pounds, put a leg in and went for the merkle, Keosseian was on auto pilot. He put his two legs behind his one so you can t get rolled through, said Howell assistant coach Rich Gildner. Eric didn t panic. When he (Acciardi) continued it, he went right to his back. Keosseian knew exactly what to do when Acciardi got there, scoring a super-fast pin at the 2:22 mark on Sunday at Boardwalk Hall. There s no feeling like this, said Keosseian, a seventh-place finisher in the state tournament last year and a West Point appointee. All the hard work in the off-season, all the hard work in the room paid off. And so did the brainwashing by the Howell coaches. Keosseian has a 2-1 lead and was down at the start of the second period. When I wrestled him over the summer that s what I used so I was waiting for it (the merkle), Keosseian said. In the middle of the move he bailed on it and I didn t realize he was going to his back at first. Once I did, I kept him there, Keosseian said. Keosseian, who finished the season 42-2 and in his career, was the third seed at 220. On his way to the state title, Howell s first since Joey Langel in 2008, Keosseian recorded two major decisions, a 10-4 win and won 4-2 in overtime in the semifinals. He was so focused, said Howell head coach John Gagaliano. When he wrestles like that he is just unstoppable. Keosseian executed the gameplan for Acciardi to perfection. We wanted him to go out and score the first takedown, Gildner said. Keosseian connected on a low single 30 seconds into the bout, switched to a double, climbed the ladder and got Acciardi to belly down for the takedown. When he s on the attack he s just a different kid, Gagliano said. Acciardi scored an escape with five second left in the first period, but it was Keosseian, who had the momentum. I knew he d go for the merkle eventually, Keosseian said. Two legs behind his one, two legs behind his one, just like Mary had a little lamb. I think I surprised him with the takedown because I don t think he expected me to shoot right then, Keosseian said. And I think he was surprised when he went to his back.

2017 State Finals Articles HIS GENERATION: DON BOSCO S ERIC CHAKONIS DEFENDS HEAVYWEIGHT STATE TITLE By Patrick Lanni NJ Advance Media for NJ.com March 05, :00 PM Don Bosco heavyweight Eric Chakonis is talking about his generation. And the next one, too. In many ways, Chakonis senior season was about stepping into his own spotlight and wrestling with the confidence he found during last year s state championship run. With a target on his back, Chakonis handled the pressure and successfully defended his state title Sunday at Boardwalk Hall. In a rematch of an overtime bout at the Beast of the East, Chakonis left little doubt that he was the most dominant big man in the state and pinned Woodbridge s Alexander LaGrippo in 52 seconds. I knew that people were going to look at me differently, Chakonis said. Last year, I kind of flew under the radar a little bit, but I always knew how good I was. I just had to find that confidence. I finally got that going last year and then kicked it in to high gear this year. The win gave Chakonis his second straight heavyweight title and made sure the family s championship belt will still have its place on the mantel. Eric s older brother, Zack, was a three-time state finalist and won the heavyweight title in His younger brother, Luke, finished his freshman year with an 11-9 record wrestling at 182. Eric Chakonis said after his match he kissed the family s championship belt and handed it to his younger brother. Now it s his turn, Eric Chakonis said. Eric Chakonis will wrestle at Bucknell University next season after finishing his career with two state state titles and a career record of This season, Chakonis finished 35-1 and pinned 24 opponents. It s something special, Chakonis said. I didn t think anything could be better the first time, but this time is just as good if not better.
