2 ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer our students the opportunity to do college level work at Clayton Valley Charter High School. The curriculum for these courses is standard throughout the country and is very rigorous. The courses are available to qualified, academically talented students in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Students will earn an additional grade point: A=5, B=4, C=3, the same as for honors courses. These classes are year long classes so students may not drop at the end of the first semester. Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Examination(s) in the spring. Many colleges will give college credit based on the student s score(s) on the examination(s). Check with the individual colleges to find out which examinations and passing scores they will accept. Each three-hour test is administered annually in May. An AP grade report is sent in July to the student, high school and college(s) if requested. Applications are available in Student Services. Check with the Treasurer s Office (Ext ) for cost of exam. (Note: Students are not required to enroll in an AP Course in order to take an AP exam)

3 Why your child should take an AP class It will raise your child s academic level, study skills, reading level. It will prepare your child for college level coursework. It s a good challenge and is something that MANY students do. AP courses are not reserved for just those students with a GPA! (a 2.5 is fine). Students will research, study, debate, work their brain harder. These courses help with college entrance. Scholarship opportunities are available. Earn College Credit. Save Money!

Not least because of the confidence that you will build when you are successful. 8 Why you should NOT take an AP course... Because you are overloading your schedule. Because taking more is not always better. Because you want a certain teacher next year! Because you are struggling academically and having a hard time keeping your grades up already. Because you are already doing a wide variety of activities and cannot commit to more time doing school work. Because your future plans don t involve attending a two/four year school? Not necessarily! It s still great career preparation.

11 Pre-requisites and planning ahead... Each AP course has pre-requisites. ex. Biology is required for AP Biology, Algebra 1 is required for AP Computer Science. A recommended GPA of 2.5 is suggested for students thinking about taking an AP class but it is not required. A B or C grade in the pre-requisite classes for most AP courses is acceptable. It s student motivation and commitment that matters the most. There is no application process required to take an AP course. Academy Courses and AP Courses may conflict in the master schedule they can fall on the same specific periods during the day. Sometimes students may have to make choices about their priorities!
