2 INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE AT HARRY AINLAY All Grade 10 students must take a year of pre-ib courses that will prepare them for the full International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in Grade 11 and Grade 12. Students who continue to take the full program will be recognized with an I.B. Diploma upon completion of the I.B. exams at the Grade 12 level. If they wish however, students in Grade 11 and Grade 12 may elect to take a partial I.B. program. They are then recognized with I.B. Certificates in specific subjects upon completion of the I.B. exams at the Grade 12 level. Please read the detailed course descriptions to note Alberta Learning Courses that are studied and credited in conjunction with pre-ib and IB Curriculum coverage. Grade 10 students in pre I.B. must take the following courses: English 10I History 10I Pure Math 10I Science 10I, Biology 25I, and either Chemistry 25I or Physics 25I An International language at the I.B. level French 10I French Language Arts 10I for immersion students German 10I Japanese 10I Physical Education 10I (3 credits) one 5 credit option and one 3 credit option or three 3 credit options (e.g. Art, Theatre Arts, Music or a second IB language) Grade 11 students who wish to continue to work towards an I.B. diploma must take the following courses: English 20I and World Literature 21I History 20I Biology 20I * Pure Math 20I and 30I A language at the I.B. level French 20I French Language Arts 20I for immersion students German 20I Japanese 20I An IB Fine Arts Course e.g. Art, Music or Theatre Arts 20I (or students can also chose to study a second IB science or a second International Language) Grade 12 students who wish to complete the I.B. diploma must take the following courses: Theory of Knowledge History 30I and World History 30I English 30I Biology 30I* Math 31I A language at the I.B. level French 30I French Language Arts 30I Japanese 30I German 30I An IB Fine Arts Course e.g. Art, Music or Theatre Arts 30I or Students can also chose to study a second IB science or a second International Language.) Full diploma students must also complete a 4000 word extended essay in Grade 12 and must complete at least 150 CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) hours throughout Grade 11 and 12. In order to qualify for the IB Calm Seminar, students must be enrolled in 20 credits of I.B. courses in Grade 11. All students will be required to complete IB Internal Assessments in each IB course. *Biology can be replaced with Physics (Higher Level), or Chemistry 30 [if the student is also taking Art (Higher Level) or Physics (Higher Level)] Course mark recommendations can be found in the Harry Ainlay General Course Description Guide. 2

3 INERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE COURSES IN ENGLISH English 10I - Pre-IB (5 Credits - English 10-1) This pre-i.b. course is designed to lay the foundations for an advanced study of literature. It presents students with the basic literary concepts, conventions, and genres. The aim is to develop the students appreciation of literature and their analytical skills. Students are expected to explore ideas through writing and discussion. English 20I* - Higher Level (5 Credits - English 20-1) This course is a study of literature drawn from a variety of genres and periods. It provides students with extensive practice in the close reading and critical analysis of literature needed for I.B. assignments and examinations. Students are expected to explore ideas through writing and discussion. World Literature 21I* Higher Level This course accompanies English 20I. It includes a comparative study of selected World Literature in translation. Students have the opportunity to choose topics independently for two World Literature papers and to design an oral presentation to fulfill the requirements of the I.B. program. Completion of these assignments are a prerequisite for enrollment in English 30I. * Students are required to enroll in both English 20I and World Literature 21I. English 30I - Higher Level (5 Credits - English 30-1) English 30I continues the study of English Literature and World Literature in translation. It includes an intensive study of poetry, a Shakespeare play and several novels. Students will fulfill IB internal assessment criteria with two written examinations and an oral examination. Please note: All IB English courses require students to meet the text study and text creation requirements mandated by The Alberta Program of Studies for each respective course. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE COURSES IN HISTORY History 10I - Pre-IB (5 credits - Social Studies 10) This pre-ib course covers the broad themes of Canadian history, politics, government, and global interdependence. Attention is placed on both written and oral communication with a particular emphasis on historical inquiry. The program focuses on the trends that shaped Canada in the 20 th century and delves into the forces that will likely affect its future. History 20I - Higher Level (5 Credits Social Studies 20) This course involves an examination of European society from the rise of nation-states until the conclusion of the First World War ( ). Studies range widely covering the fields of history, political science, economics, and culture. The Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the rise of modern ideologies, and the origins of the First World War are all examined. Students will be introduced to the rudiments of the Historical Investigation, the principal research project undertaken in their senior year. History 30I* - Higher Level (5 Credits Social Studies 30) The course analyzes the trends which have altered Europe and the world in the past century. A particular emphasis is placed on the origins and development of the World Wars, the advent and personality of singleparty states and the role of international organizations. Moreover, attention will be given to political and economic systems with case studies selected from contemporary societies. The Historical Investigation, a major research project, will be undertaken in the first semester of the senior year. World History 30I* - Higher Level This course complements History 30I and endeavors to augment the students understanding of trends affecting the world in the past century. A particular emphasis is placed on the origin and development of the Cold War. Considerable attention is given to historical interpretation and the analysis of documents. *Students are required to enroll in both History 30I and World History 30I 3

4 INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE COURSES IN MATHEMATICS Pure Mathematics 10I - Pre-IB (5 Credits Pure Math 10) The focus of this pre-ib course is the development of basic algebra, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry skills, and their application to problem solving. Pure Mathematics 10I includes an introduction to arithmetic and geometric growth, radicals, functions, matrices and linear systems. Pure Mathematics 20I - Standard Level (5 credits Pure Math 20) This course continues the study of functions with the introduction of quadratic, and rational functions. Other topics include analysis of equations and inequalities, an introduction to logic, circle geometry, the mathematics of finance, matrices and vectors. Students will complete an assignment on Finance. Pure Mathematics 30I - Standard Level (5 credits Pure Math 30) In this course, the study of functions continues with the introduction of polynomial, trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions. The course also includes geometric sequences and series, transformations, conic sections, permutations and combinations, normal distribution, expectation and probabilities. Students will complete a portfolio assignment. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE COURSES IN SCIENCE Semester 1: Science 10I - Pre-IB (5 credits Science 10) Science 10I is intended to provide an introduction to the study of biology, chemistry and physics. This pre-ib course is split into biological science ("Science 10IB") and physical science ("Science 10IP") sections which are taken concurrently. Overall, Science 10I includes the biology, chemistry, and physics units from the regular Science 10 program, but most concepts are studied in greater depth. The course focuses on the development of laboratory skills and scientific communication. A lab portfolio will be generated. Semester 2: Students must take Biology 25I and either Chemistry 25I or Physics 25I. The third science may be taken as a 3 credit option. Biology 25I - Pre- IB (3 credits) This pre-ib course builds on the biology concepts introduced in Science 10I. It covers the regular Biology 20 topics of evolution, ecology, weather systems, and exchanges of matter and energy within ecosystems. Other pre-ib topics are initiated in this course and will be revisited in Biology 20I and 30I to emphasize a greater depth of understanding. The course continues to build on laboratory skills in a biological setting. A lab portfolio will be generated. Pure Mathematics 31I - Standard Level (5 credits Math 31) The Mathematics 31I course introduces the fundamental processes of calculus; the derivative, the integral, and their application to problem solving and graphing. Students will complete a portfolio assignment. 4

5 Chemistry 25I - Pre-IB (3 credits) A continuation of Science 10I, Chemistry 25I is a pre-ib course that involves a more detailed treatment of atomic, bonding, and reaction theories. Historical considerations of the mole concept lead to mathematical problem solving involving gases, liquids, solids and solutions. The mathematics of chemistry is further emphasized with units in stoichiometry, colligative properties of solutions, and the quantitative relationships in chemical reactions. Physics 25I - Pre IB (3 credits) This pre-ib course introduces students to the analysis of motion and its importance to technology. Topics include Kinematics and Newton s Laws of Motion which provide the necessary foundation for subsequent courses in physics. Laboratory investigations are done to enhance students learning. The curriculum content studied at the Grade 10 level addresses the Alberta Curriculum and some other pre-ib topics. The pre-ib topics will be revisited in Grade 11 and 12 emphasizing a greater depth of understanding. Only two I.B. sciences can be chosen in Grade 11 for full diploma candidates. Diploma Students must take Biology 20I and may take either Chemistry 20I or Physics 20I (unless they take Higher Level Physics). All Grade 11 IB Science students must complete a group 4 project. Biology 21 This course is intended for the student who successfully completed Biology 25I, but who does not wish to pursue I.B. Biology. Units covering the flow of energy and matter at the cellular level and matter and energy exchanges by humans will provide the student with the necessary background to convert their 3 credits at the 25I level to 5 credits in Biology 20. The student s final mark in this course will be 50% of the Biology 25I and 50% of the Biology 21 grade. Chemistry 20I - Standard Level (5 Credits Chemistry 20) Chemistry 20I builds on the quantitative concepts introduced in Chemistry 15I and adds bonding theories. Students will study Organic Chemistry, Bonding and Electrochemistry in great depth. Energy is also introduced at this level. A variety of laboratory activities are done with the student keeping permanent records in a laboratory portfolio. All students will complete a Group IV Project. Chemistry 21 This course is intended for the student who successfully completed Chemistry 25I but who does not wish to pursue I.B. Chemistry. Units covering chemical bonding and organic chemistry provide the student with the necessary background to convert their 3 credits at the 25I level to 5 credits in Chemistry 20. The student s final mark in this course will be 50% of the Chemistry 25I and 50% of the Chemistry 21 grade. Biology 20I - Higher Level (5 Credits Biology 20) Biology 20I continues to build on biological concepts including Molecular Genetics, Mendelian Genetics, Macroevolution, Biochemistry, Energetics, and Plant Physiology. Laboratory skills continue to be practiced, leading students to the designing of their own labs when presented with a biological problem. This is a mandatory course for all full IB diploma candidates. All students will complete a Group IV project. A lab portfolio will be generated. 5

6 Physics 20I - Standard Level* (5 Credits Physics 20) Physics 20I builds upon the physics concepts introduced in Physics 15I. Students will study the physics of motion, forces and projectiles as they relate to everyday life. They will explore the physics behind Circular Motion, Astrophysics, General Relativity, Light, and Music using examples from everyday technology such as CD-ROMs, mp3 files, amusement park physics and lasers. Laboratory investigations are an important part of this course and a lab portfolio will be generated. All students will complete a Group IV project. *Higher Level Physics can be studied with special recommendation and accommodations. Physics 21 This course is intended for the student who successfully completed Physics 25I but who does not wish to pursue I.B. physics. Physics 21 will provide the student with the necessary background to convert their 3 credits at the 25I level to 5 credits in Physics 20. Units covered are circular motion, gravity, sound, mechanical waves and light. The student s final grade in this course will be 50% of the Physics 25I grade and 50% of Physics 21 grade. Only two I.B. sciences can be chosen in Grade 12 for full diploma candidates. Diploma Students will take Biology 30I and may take either Chemistry 30I or Physics 30I (unless they have taken Higher Level Physics). Biology 30I - Higher Level (5 Credits Biology 30) This final course in Biology will review Biochemistry, Energetics, Cellular Structure and Movement of Materials before focusing on a detailed study of the Anatomy and Physiology of Human systems. Course content will be enhanced through laboratory activities which will involve various dissections. A lab portfolio will be generated. Chemistry 30I - Standard Level (5 Credits Chemistry 30) This final course in Chemistry examines the three core units studied in the regular Chemistry 30 program and extra IB material including two options. Students will be asked to create their own laboratory designs at this level, which are part of the IB internal assessment laboratory requirement. A lab portfolio will be generated. Physics 30I - Standard Level* (5 Credits Physics 30) This final course in Physics builds upon concepts from Physics 20I and explores Electricity and Magnetism as well as their role in modern technology. It then moves from classical physics to concepts found in modern physics such as Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. The basic physics governing the working of all modern electronics is studied. Technologies such as television, electric motors, generators, speakers, and radio are constantly used to illustrate and explore physics. This course provides a firm foundation for those wishing to pursue further studies in areas such as, architecture, engineering, dentistry, medicine or any other endeavour that relies on modern technology. Laboratory investigations are an important part of this course and a lab portfolio will be generated. *Higher Level Physics can be studied with special recommendation and accommodations. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES French 10 Pre-IB (5 Credits - French 20) This is a pre-ib course recommended for persons with sufficient background (at least 3 years in junior high FSL courses). French 10I is equivalent to regular curriculum French 20. Students who are deficient in French language skills should register in German 10I or Japanese 10I. Objectives are: - a basic grammar for most everyday speech. - the development of basic skills using readers, magazines, and newspapers and an emphasis on correctness of simple sentence structures as used in description, in summarization, or in the sharing of information. - students will use basic French to discuss day-to-day situations. French Language Arts 10I - Pre-IB (5 Credits FLA 10) This course is designed for immersion students who wish to enrol in the I.B. program. It is similar to French Language Arts 10. See the general course guide for details. 6

7 German 10I Pre-IB (5 Credits German 10) This pre-ib course is designed for absolute beginners and gives an introduction to contemporary spoken and written German. Students will learn how to express themselves in a variety of different areas: personal information, free-time activities, food and drink, etc. Students will gain an understanding of spelling, pronunciation, basic sentence structure and other grammatical aspects. Students will also be exposed to various aspects of culture, history and geography of German-speaking countries. Japanese 10I - Ab Initio* Standard Level (5 Credits Japanese 10) This pre-ib course is designed for absolute beginners and aims at a primary command of Japanese. Basic grammar and sentence structure are studied as well as the Hiragana and Katakana writing systems. * Language B level is available for students with French 20I Language B - Standard Level (5 Credits French 30) In addition to grammar and vocabulary exercises, readings are taken from French magazines and newspapers. It is the basis for vocabulary development, language study, and oral and written composition. In discussions, an emphasis will be put on La Francophonie dans lemonde (Francophones in the World) as required for I.B. French Language Arts 20I Language B - Standard Level (5 Credits FLA 20) This course is similar to French Language Arts 20. See the general course guide for details. German 20I - Ab Initio* - Standard Level (5 Credits German 20) This is the first year of the two-year German IB Ab Initio course. Students will continue to learn how to express themselves in a variety of different areas: how one lives, health, typical cities, holidays and traveling, celebrations, etc. Students will read and write lengthier texts, and investigate slightly more complex grammatical aspects such as the past tense. Students will also continue to be exposed to various aspects of culture, history and geography of German-speaking countries. Japanese 20I - Ab Initio* - Standard Level (5 Credits Japanese 20) Students will further develop their comprehension and communication skills. Seventy Kanji characters are introduced in addition to new vocabulary and structures. Study of Japanese culture is continued using a variety of resources. All 30I Language students must complete an Oral Examination to fulfill the IB internal assessment criteria. French 30I Standard Level (5 Credits French 31C) Grammar Study - To reach or surpass the oral and written language requirements for I.B. Most is a review and an expansion of what was previously learned in French 10I and 20I. Readings Numerous articles will be read and discussed. Oral Four oral projects must be completed and they are the basis for the 30% oral component of the final mark. French Language Arts 30I - Language B Standard Level (5 Credits FLA 30) This course is similar to FLA 30. See the general course guide for details. German 30I - Ab Initio* - Standard Level (5 Credits German 30) This is the second year of the two-year German IB Ab Initio course. Students will be exposed to a variety of experiences and culture: descriptions and clothing, the German school system, jobs and work, television and other media, literature, etc. Students will continue to refine their language skills, regularly read articles, do creative and other writing, and participate in discussion groups. Students will complete various oral projects throughout the year to prepare them for their oral examination (30% of IB mark) in March. Extensive 7

8 practice is also given to prepare students for the written examinations (70% of IB mark) in May. sufficient background in the language Japanese 30I - Ab Initio* - Standard Level (5 Credits Japanese 30) This course is the continuation of Japanese 20I. Speak Japanese Book 2 is the main textbook used in the class. More grammatical structures, 105 Kanji characters, and cultural information will be covered in order to meet the requirements for I.B. Japanese. The U of A grants advanced credit and placement to students who achieve a final mark of 6 or above in this course. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE FINE ARTS Grade 10 Art 10I - Pre-IB (5 Credits Art 10) This course is Art 10. See the general course guide for a description. Grade 11 & 12 Art 20I Standard Level* or Higher Level (5 Credits Art 20) Art 30I Standard Level* or Higher Level (5 Credits Art 30) Prerequisite: - Presently enrolled in I.B. and/or student demonstrates in Art 10 motivation and superior artistic abilities. A grade of 80% in Art 10 is recommended. Each IB Visual Arts course consists of two linked compulsory parts, with many activities integrating work in the studio with workbook research. In common to each course are core elements, which include the: Introduction to art concepts, criticism and analysis of works relevant to personal interests Participation in research related to critical analysis of art and culture Acquisition of studio technical and media skills Relation of art to socio-cultural and historical contexts. Assessment Criteria for Studio work include: Imaginative expression Purposeful exploration Meaning and function Formal qualities Technical and Media Skills Assessment Criteria for Research Workbooks include: Independent Research Critical Research Contextual Research Visual Research There are two levels of I.B. Art available to students in this program. Higher level 240 hours Evaluation will be based upon the two following parts and weightings: Studio Work 70% Research Workbooks 30% Standard Level A 150 hours Evaluation will be based upon the two following parts and weightings: Studio Work 70% Research Workbooks 30% *The Standard Level A course is recommended for most students. Higher Level should only be attempted by those students who require Higher Level to complete their IB Diplomas or by those who wish to pursue Art as a career. Grade 10 Drama 10I (Theatre Arts) Pre-IB (5 Credits Drama 10) Prerequisite: An interest in theatre arts and a willingness to try the unfamiliar. It is not necessary to have previously taken drama. This is a pre-ib course intended to develop confidence, concentration, creativity, and communication skills to enable the student to function within the theatre craft. Improvisations from sensory and literary sources and scene work from playscripts of the modern theatre are studied. Students are introduced to staging elements and basic analyses of plot, character, and theme. Grade 11 Drama 20I (Theatre Arts) - Standard Level (5 Credits Drama 20) This is an introduction to the theatrical disciplines of the playwright, actor, director, designer, and critic. It includes a study of the context and craft of the traditional theatrical expressions and of the types and styles of plays from the primitive mythologic through the classic period up to Scene work from the various historical periods is studied. 8

9 Drama 30I Theatre Arts - Standard Level (5 Credits Drama 30) Drama 30I includes an analysis of the context, craft, type, and styles of theatrical productions and performance in plays/scenes from 1890 to the present. Directing the One Act Play: Script analysis, concepts, designs, models, technic, staging, and the total process through to performance. The class company is responsible for all elements production, direction, design, construction, acting, and management of their one act play festival. *All IB drama candidates must complete a play analysis, research project, and a theatre arts portfolio throughout the Drama 20I and Drama 30I courses. These three projects will be sent for external assessment. Grade 10 Students should be enrolled Symphonic or Concert Band in Grade 10. Prerequisite: prior acceptance by music director. Grade 11 & 12 Instrumental Music 20I Standard Level (or by special arrangement for full Diploma Candidates) (5 Credits Instrumental Music 20) (5 Credits General Music 20) Instrumental Music 30I Standard Level (5 Credits Instrumental Music 30) (5 Credits General Music 30) The art of music demands that the educated musician and music lover be able to recognize and articulate musical elements realized in diverse examples of music making. This course encourages students to develop creatively their knowledge, abilities and understanding through performance, analysis and composition. Standard level candidates will be expected to demonstrate use of appropriate terms to describe and reflect their critical understanding of music, and will demonstrate an understanding of music in relation to time and place. In addition, candidates will demonstrate their development in: Group music making The course will be taught in conjunction with the Symphonic Band classes. Students playing band instruments will perform as part of the ensemble, nonband instrument students will be assigned self-study. All students will take classes in theory, analysis and history as a subsection of the class. AND 12 Creativity, Action, Service (C.A.S.) Full IB Diploma candidates will be required to complete hours of extra-curricular activities. Approximately one-third of these hours will be done pursuing Creative endeavors, one-third on athletic Action pursuits, and the final one-third on community "Service" activities. The intent of this requirement is to help the students challenge themselves in new ways beyond the classroom. Career and Life Management (3 credits - Calm 20) Any IB student who maintains at least 20 credits in IB courses in Grade 11 will be entitled to fulfill the Alberta Diploma Calm requirement via a seminar-based program. All students will be required to create a reflective Calm journal. OTHER FULL DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS Theory of Knowledge 30I Theory of Knowledge encourages lateral thinking in order to understand the links that occur between the academic areas studied in the I.B. program. It is the "art of wondering" about the human place in an interdependent universe. Students are challenged to develop their critical thinking skills and express them in both verbal and written form. Students will complete an oral presentation and an essay on a prescribed title. T.O.K. is a mandatory course for I.B. Diploma candidates but may be chosen as an elective by I.B. certificate candidates in Grade 12. Extended Essay Full IB Diploma candidates will be required to complete an independent analysis driven research paper of up to 4000 words on a focused topic of their choice. Students must be enrolled in the IB subject area that they choose to write the extended essay in. 9
