2 This guide contains details of the KS4 examination courses that we offer at Maidenhill. Each subject page contains the address of the teacher who is responsible for that subject. The final pages of the booklet show the examination times and dates that have been confirmed by the ination Boards for the written examinations. Practical examinations will be arranged during the two years. 3 Art GCSE Fine Art AQA GCSE Art and Design Controlled Assessment coursework. Externally set assignment (exam) % of marks contributed by each One Controlled assessment starts January % Portfolio: A sustained project developed in response to a brief and a selection of further work including sketch book, responses to gallery visits, independent study, 2 and 3D experimental and skills work. Work submitted must include drawing activity and annotation. 40% External Task: A response to a selected externally set assignment. Work submitted must include drawing activity and annotation Other information Both s must be entered. Controlled Assessment terms 1 2 Y11. AQA paper and externally set task released to students at the start of term 3; January to March 2017 is the preparation period. of 10 hours at the start of term 5. 4 Computer Science -Option NEW OCR Computer Science (Grading 9-1) J276 GCSE Paper 1 - Computer systems - 1 hour 30 minutes June 2018 Paper 2 Computational Thinking 1 hour 30 minutes June 2018 NEA Programming Project October-November 2018 Single Tier % of marks contributed by each External ination Written Paper 1 40% External ination Written Paper 2 40% Non- Assessment - 20% Non- Assessment: Similar to controlled Assessment 20 hours to complete a Programming Project. Mr Christopher Bargh cbargh@maidenhill.gloucs.sch.uk Possible visiting speaker from Gloucester University and a possible trip to Bletchley Park/Jaguar Land Rover to contextualise what the students are learning. It would be advisable for students to own a PC with Python IDLE installed to practise their programming techniques. Promote independent problem solving and logical thinking. Encourage them to not just play with technology but also recreate the games that they play using a programming language of their choice (Most IDEs are available for free download) For a basic understanding and

However ECDL is sought after in pretty much any industry that requires the use of basic computer skills, so it is well worth the effort for the students to pass it. Access to the Microsoft Office suite would be desirable. Encourage them to use ICT independently but look into some of the more obscure features of applications software. Get them to create the budgets in Excel, thank you cards/letters in Word and presentations in PowerPoint. Saving you time and money!

10 English WJEC GCSE English GCSE Component 1: (40%) Reading understanding of one prose extract of literature from the 20 th Century and one creative task selected from a choice of four titles. Component 2: (60%) Reading non-fiction from the 19 th and 21 st Centuries and Two compulsory transactional/persuasive Writing tasks. June 2018 Levels 9-1 % of marks contributed by each English: 100% titles/dates due/% of final marks/any other information Component 3: Spoken Language Achievement in Spoken Language will be reported as part of the qualification, but it will not form part of the final mark and grade. 11 French AQA Full course. GCSE (for first examination Summer 2018) All 4 skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking) to be assessed at the end of year 11 % of marks contributed by each Reading exam: 25% Listening exam: 25% Speaking: 25% Writing: 25% Students will study topics within three themes, namely: Identity and culture; local, national, international and global areas of interest; current and future study and employment. Other information They will complete periodic assessments at the end of each topic, which will mirror their final formal exams and will both assess their progress towards their targets and train them in successful strategies to use in their final examinations. They will also complete mock examinations in Y10 and Y11. At the end of the course, students will be entered for examinations in all 4 skill areas (as outlined above) at either Foundation (grades 1 5) or Higher (grades 4 9). entry tiers will be determined by the school and the subject leader and will reflect students target grades and their progress during the course. - Mrs Lisa Collins lcollins@maidenhill.gloucs.sch.uk Bi-lingual dictionary. 16 Mathematics GCSE (Edexcel) Linear course. Three 1hr 30minute exam papers. Two calculator and one non-calculator papers to be sat on separate occasions. Paper 1 Non calculator Paper 2 Calculator Paper 3 - Calculator All papers will be sat in May/June 2018 Higher : Grades 9 4 % of marks contributed by each Foundation: Grades 5 1 The exam makes up 100% of the marks. No coursework, but students will be given internal tests throughout the duration of the course. Available at 6 from the school shop) Purchase a revision guide and workbook from the school shop Ensure that students are fully prepared for tests encourage them to do regular revision throughout the year, using or and the revision workbook.
17 PE AQA GCSE PE Full Course GCSE 2 External Summer Papers, 1 hour and 15minutes 1 % of marks contributed by each Written s 2 x 30% = 60% Controlled Practical Assessment 30% Controlled Written Assessment 10% Students have the opportunity to participate in practical activities as a player performer. These controlled practical assessments contribute towards 30% of the final grade. Each activity totalling 10%. Analysing and improving performance accounts for 10% of the final grade. Students have to identify and explain strengths and weaknesses within a specific activity and suggest ways to improve and monitor performance. The remaining 60% is made up of 2 exams. Each exam paper is 30%. Two exams for each discipline. Therefore there are 6 exams in total. Foundation or Higher There are 2 papers for each discipline (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). All papers are 1 hour and 45 minutes long and will contribute towards 50% of the overall GCSE for each discipline. There is now no longer a coursework element to the course, however, you will have to carry out a set of practical s which may be assessed in the exam. Each paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes long and will contribute towards 16.7% of the overall GCSE. There is now no longer a coursework element to the course.
