2 Superintendent s Message The Annual Report for Appomattox County Public Schools (ACPS) is produced to provide the public with information about our school division. You will find School Board Members, Central Office Staff, and Principals contact information. We have included Standards of Learning (SOL) data, school division information, and finance figures. You will also see many school division successes highlighted during Dorinda G. Grasty, Ed. D. Division Superintendent We enroll approximately 2200 students among our four schools, which are Appomattox Primary (grades PK-2), Appomattox Elementary (grades 3-5), Appomattox Middle (grades 6-8), and Appomattox County High School (grades 9-12). We employ 400 full and part-time staff. Our theme continues to be Striving for Excellence. Our goal is to engage every student in rigorous and meaningful academic work with high expectations. We aim to prepare our students to be career and/ or college ready upon graduation. Appomattox County Public Schools is proud to announce that all of its schools are fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education based on performance of students on Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in English, math, science, and history during For a school to earn full accreditation, students must achieve adjusted pass rates of at least 75 percent in English and at least 70 percent on assessments in math, science, and history. High schools must also meet a benchmark for graduation and completion. Appomattox County Public Schools is one of 65 school divisions, out of 132 total divisions in Virginia, to have all schools fully accredited. Appomattox County Public Schools is proud to have all schools fully accredited for the third consecutive year. Having all schools fully accredited for the third year is a shining reflection of the daily dedication of all teachers and staff of Appomattox County Public Schools to our students. We appreciate and acknowledge parent and community support of our students in this accomplishment. We are also two-time State Football Champs in 2015 and Go Raiders! Principal Appomattox Primary School Highlights Participated in the Hour of Code in December in computer science. Honored Veterans on Veterans Day in November with a special service. Celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday in March. Enjoyed Little Farmer s Day in April as ACHS students brought animals to APS. Participated in Field Day in April with a variety of movement activities. Enjoyed Holiday Cruising with Santa Family Night in December. Celebrated Student Attendance Awareness Month in September. Introduced Kelso s Choice: Conflict Management, to all students. Participated in Balanced Literacy Training in the fall. Created a Bookroom with leveled reading books. Created a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math Lab. (STEAM) Developed a STEAM based Summer School led by STEAM Committee. Completed STEAM projects throughout the school year. Staff attended a STEAM Conference. STRIVING for EXCELLENCE

Principal Appomattox Elementary School Highlights Was one of ALL FOUR schools in Appomattox to be fully accredited! Was home of the 2017 Region 8 Teacher of the Year! Increased the achievement of Students with Disabilities by 20 percentage points or more in both Reading and Math. Partnered with local businesses to promote Reading Success and raise money for books (McDonald s, Baines, Pizza Hut). Supported a variety of community needs, including the Ronald McDonald House, through A Heart for Harper. Had winning participants in many regional competitions such as the Scripps Spelling Bee, Regional Science Fair, Public Speaking, Stock Market Game, and Young Author s Contest. Attended local campuses of Longwood College and Liberty University to experience Broadway-caliber theatre. Expanded the 24 Math tournaments across all grades. Saw continual growth and participation in the voluntary Regional Science Fair. Celebrated Hometown Heroes all through the year, with visits, luncheons, and weekly emphasis. Experienced the under-told stories of our African American history through the program Appomattox in Black, White, Blue, and Grey. Participated in Market Day at Lynchburg College, designed to develop personal entrepreneurship. Offered mentorships with after school tutoring through ACHS National Honor Society students. Along with APS, held the first Summer STEAM Camp for Summer School. Presented two scholarships to ACHS Seniors for the first time through the Lisa and Jada Friendship Memorial.

Principal Appomattox Middle School Highlights Maintained full accreditation status from the Virginia Department of Education. Competed in the KidWind Challenge Event held at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College. Motivated students to articulate their dreams and pursue them with perseverance through motivational speaker Richie Contartesi. Inspired students with the possibilities of a career in writing through guest speakers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, creators of Despicable Me. Inducted 33 new members into the National Junior Honor Society. Hosted a Veterans Luncheon on Veterans Day organized and led by SCA sponsors and officers. Competed and placed in FFA events including FFA Forestry Fall Day, HUB Federation Dairy Judging, FFA Quiz Bowl, Food and Fiber, and Agriscience Technology Mechanics. Honored AMS students who are military children during Month of the Military Child in April. Studied the I Have a Dream speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr. as a student body and followed-up by creating dream chains where students shared their dream for the world. Honored students receiving a perfect score on a SOL test with induction into the AMS 600 Club during a luncheon with their parents as invited guests. Traveled to attend the Carolina Renaissance Festival with students from the Advanced Learners Program. Placed in community and regional levels in the Piedmont Regional Young Writers Contest. Competed in MathCounts competition and Lego League competition. Celebrated the success and growth of all AMS students with a daylong SOL Celebration complete with games, teacher performances, and cool treats.

Principal Appomattox County High School 198 Evergreen Avenue, Appomattox, VA 24522, (434) Appomattox County High School Highlights ACHS graduated 184 seniors. ACHS had 42 honor graduates. Thirteen students earned the Governor s Certificate of Recognition for the Early College Scholar s Program. Three students enlisted in the military. Seniors were accepted to 50 different colleges/universities. Thirty students will attend a two-year college. Sixty-nine students will attend a four-year college. Ten students will attend a vocational school. Five students earned their GED. 3 students completed Central Virginia Governor s School. Ninety-six students graduated with an advanced diploma. SkillsUSA Entrepreneurship Team won back to back Virginia State Skills Champion, and National Skills Champion. Five FFA students received their State FFA Degree. Four Auto Mechanics Seniors earned the Virginia State Inspector s License. The Football Team won back to back 2A State Champions. The Boys Soccer Team went to the 2A State Final Four. ACHS was named a Blue Ribbon School for Performance Ensembles. Boy s Outdoor Track was Conference 37 Champions, Region 2A West Champions, and had 2 individual Virginia 2A State Champions. The yearbook, themed Everything You Never Expected, received a rating of first place from the Virginia High School League in the Publications Category. FOR Club spent 525 hours working on projects and education to decrease bullying in the school. Two students achieved full CompTIA A+ PC Technician Certification. Three students who were Park Service Volunteer Guides have been hired by the Park to be Seasonal Park Service Guides, and one has been hired for the Living History Program. One teacher has been hired as an instructor for the "Teacher-Ranger-Teacher" Program. Eighteen seniors participated in Hampden-Sydney College s Model United Nations Conference. Students and staff conducted many community service projects. The FFA was recognized as a 2 Star National Chapter. Students and Staff donated 113 Units of Blood through blood drives.
