2 Mission Statement MEB is a community focused on learning through respect, responsibility, caring and acting with integrity. 3 Each of the four core curricular areas will have a specific sequence that follows. There are times when students may move and make changes to the sequence. Core Curriculum Sequence

8 Algebra I High School level class earning high school credit. Students must qualify for placement into this class. No student may drop this class after 10 days of the beginning of the school year. Mathematics Placement

9 Homework expectations nightly. Preparation expectations beyond homework. Studying major facet of class. Attendance and preparation is imperative. Strong self-advocacy skills needed. Application of problem solving skills involving real world situations. Algebra I

10 Quarter grade calculation consists of 75% tests/quizzes and 25% homework. Semester Grades Calculated: 40% Quarter 1, 40% Quarter 2, 20% Final Semester Summative End Of Course (EOC) Assessment replaces MAP score/test. This test also calculates into the overall grade for the class for 4 th Quarter. Students must receive a Proficient or Advanced score on the EOC in Algebra I to be eligible for participation in the A+ program at the high school. Algebra I

11 Students successfully completing Algebra I will have an opportunity to be placed in Geometry or Honors Geometry their freshman year. Students receiving a D or better grade per semester will not be allowed to retake Algebra I as a high school freshman. This grade will appear on their high school transcript and be used in GPA calculation. Mathematics Sequence

12 Pre-AP English Language Arts 8 Students must qualify for placement into this class. Homework expectations nightly. Attendance and preparation is imperative. Strong self-advocacy skills needed. Strong organizational skills to plan and monitor long-term projects. Novel selections will be generally two years above normal 8 th grade reading level. More complex and mature reading selections are utilized. Strong knowledge and application of all previously learned CA concepts. English Language Arts Placement

13 Honors Physical Science 8 High School Honors level class earning high school honors credit. This class represents a 2+ year academic acceleration from 7 th grade curriculum. Class is weighted on a 5.0 scale. A=5, B=4, C=3, D=1, F=0. No student may drop this class after 10 days of the beginning of the school year. Science Placement

14 Homework expectations nightly and weekends. (One hour per night) Preparation expectations beyond homework. Studying major facet of class. Multiple formal lab reports (6+ pages typed). Attendance and preparation is imperative. Strong self-advocacy skills needed. Strong mathematics and writing skills necessary. Honors Physical Science 8

15 Independent learning and application outside of regular classroom day in addition to homework. Students have limited background knowledge of this type of curriculum. Grades Calculated: 40% Quarter 1, 40% Quarter 2, 20% Final Semester Summative Honors Physical Science 8

16 Pre-Advanced Placement US History 8 Students must qualify for placement into this class. Expectation of reading critically and assessing whether those ideas are supported by evidence. Students will create written essays utilizing a thorough research process. Tests that challenge to a higher level with inferential reading and critical thinking. Students will be expected to speak effectively in classroom debates or mock court formats. Social Studies Placement

17 Spanish I-French I-German I- Mandarin I High School level class earning high school credit. No student may drop this class after 10 days of the beginning of the school year. Semester Grades Calculated: 40% Quarter 1, 40% Quarter 2, 20% Final Semester Summative Foreign Language Placement

18 Studying outside of class necessary. Emphasis on vocabulary. This high school course will require nightly studying and review of materials in preparation for a comprehensive final. Strong written and verbal skills recommended. Strong English Language Arts background in grammar, sentence structure, and word attack skills recommended. French I, German I, Mandarin I, Spanish I

19 Students must qualify for next level honors classes at the high school. Placement in honors level classes is not automatic based upon 8 th grade course. Students who fail high school credited courses will have to retake the course in high school. Grades in high school level credited courses are calculated in your overall high school GPA. This is true for students that receive a D or F in high school level courses. High School Placement
