4 MULTIPLE PATHWAYS (4 + 1 OPTION) Option to earn a NYS Regents Diploma by passing four Regents Exams and one Pathway Exam ELA + 1 Social Studies + Math + Science + 1 Pathway Exam Who is eligible? Humanities: Additional Social Studies Regents Exam or Department approved alternative. Students Who: Entered Grade 9 in September 2011 or thereafter Eligible to receive high school diploma in June 2015 or thereafter STEM: Additional Regents Exam in a different course in math or science or a Department approved alternative. LOTE (Biliteracy): Pathway exam approved by the Commissioner in Language Other Than English. CTE: Career and Technical Education pathway exam approved by the Commissioner following successful completion of an approved CTE program or Career Development & Occupational Studies completion. Arts: Arts pathway exam approved by the Commissioner. CDOS: Career Development & Occupational Studies - Completing necessary program components to earn the Credential

Final course grades (except Physical Education) are used to determine GPA Placement in Pre-IB, Pre-AP, IB, AP, and College-Level Classes Advanced Weighting Involvement in Extracurricular Activities, participation in athletics, and Honors and Awards all to be included on the college application and your child s Activity Resume

6 WHAT IS A TRANSCRIPT??? The TRANSCRIPT is the report sent to colleges that reflects every semester of high school that a student has completed Courses taken in grades 9 through 12, as well as any high school courses taken in middle school; final grades, course weighting, credits earned, and Regents scores are on the transcript Unweighted and Weighted Grade Point Averages Cohort Groupings Colleges utilize freshman, sophomore, and junior grades as admission criteria along with in-progress senior grades Colleges may recalculate the GPA according to their methodology

7 GET INVOLVED! Quality over quantity! A healthy balance is key. Find your passion and follow it. Develop as a leader, if possible Select school activities that demonstrate your interests, strengths, passions, or leadership abilities Discover what is available in the community Volunteer CSIP requirements

8 POTENTIAL COLLEGE-BOUND ATHLETES Speak with your coach regarding ability level Meet with your counselor to discuss potential colleges Visit the NCAA website at for registration and eligibility information Communicate with college coaches during Junior year. NCAA Night December 2018

9 COLLEGE ADMISSIONS CRITERIA Strength in Curriculum: Pre-IB, Pre-AP, IB, AP, College-Level Course Grades Standardized Test scores (SAT/ACT) Cohort Group (class standing) Essay or writing sample Counselor Recommendation Teacher Recommendations Interview (if required or recommended) Community Service Employment and Extracurricular Activities (Quality, not Quantity)

10 COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS Most (but not all) colleges will require an SAT or ACT Some top tier schools will require at least 2 SAT Subject Tests The summer after 10 th grade is an excellent time to review PSAT/Pre-ACT results The 11 th Grade PSAT is used to qualify for the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). 13 SAT & ACT COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS Plan ahead and register for exams early seats at CHS fill up quickly! Keep an eye on registration deadlines! Register for the SAT/ACT with Writing Begin preparing with ample time before your test date(s) Variations of preparation options available to you prep opportunities will be mailed home over the summer Utilize PSAT results on Collegeboard.org for valuable feedback on preparing for the SAT (Khan Academy)

14 SAT SUBJECT TESTS, IB & AP If considering top tier schools, plan to take SAT Subject Tests when you are completing the appropriate course IB and AP assessments will be announced by Coordinators and Teachers and take place in May Speak to your teachers to determine whether you are prepared to sit for an SAT Subject Test For more information regarding Subject Tests, please visit the Counseling Center website or
