5 Introduction Government departments have a very important role in society. Human development has ranked high on the priority list of Government programmes since Independence, and several initiatives have been undertaken to improve the educational status and working conditions of the citizens of India. The Government has made efforts to provide specialized vocational training so that skills can be developed and employment prospects improved. Efforts are also on to try and eliminate child labour, or ensure that children are provided education, nutrition, health checkups and life skills education along with their work. The working conditions of women labour are also being improved, and minimum wages prescribed. Creches are also being set up so that more women can join the work force. A Project was undertaken by Documentation Centre for Women and Children (DCWC), NIPCCD to bring out Directories of Organizations in various areas. This document covers government departments dealing with the welfare and empowerment of Labour. For the convenience of users, organizations in the Directory have been arranged alphabetically state-wise. This Directory gives detailed information about government departments and their activities, including postal address, telephone, fax, website, address, and key words indicating their areas of work and activities. It has been possible to bring out this document due to the extensive cooperation extended by departments that have shared the relevant information with us. Without their support it would not have been possible to bring out this compilation. It is hoped that this document would be useful to all stakeholders working for the empowerment of vulnerable sections of society.
