Introduction Alps is the recognised leader in Post-16 performance analysis and training. We have built this reputation by combining three elements: Simple to use reports that are available at the start of the autumn term. High quality analysis designed by teachers to give management teams the information they need to set priorities for the year ahead. The highest quality training delivered by senior leaders from outstanding schools and colleges. There are three sets of principles which underpin all our work: Firstly, the idea that each student is an individual, an exception and needs to be valued. Secondly, aspiration, inspiration and motivation are key elements needed in work with young people. Thirdly, powerful leadership and high quality teaching and learning, coupled with high quality target-setting, monitoring, guidance and support are three elements that define outstanding schools and colleges. Using Alps challenges participants to continuously improve incrementally to the levels of the 75th percentile schools. Alps reports identify strengths and weaknesses on our nine point scale so that good practice can be shared and weaknesses can be strengthened. Using Alps is a positive process. For several years we have had feedback from a number of schools that our analysis and training would be a welcome addition Pre-16. Based on this we conducted Pre-16 pilots in the academic year These pilots were successful and we received very positive feedback. Government policies in education are radically changing the landscape with schools, new academies, multi-academy trusts and free schools now co-existing. Accountability measures are changing radically at KS4 in The Progress 8 measure will show whether pupils have performed better than expected at the end of Key Stage 4 considering their starting point at KS2. Ensuring students are successfully challenged to make better than expected progress from KS2 to KS4 will be crucially important to good or outstanding schools. Furthermore, inspections are increasingly focused on the progress students are making and the quality of leadership and teaching and learning. In this challenging educational landscape we see our reports and training as being ever more helpful to senior staff and teachers in delivering better results through the forensic analysis we provide. Our new goal is to support schools in raising achievement at GCSE in the same way as we do Post-16. Pages recommended for use with Governors G 3 In , we delivered a significant amount of training for governors, usually through local authority Governor Services. During this training we are often asked which pages are most useful for governors and indeed which pages should be shared with governors. We have decided this year to identify the following pages with our Governor Mark. For ease of use, pages with this logo on them are suitable for use with governors: 1. Raw results 2. Strategic overview 3. Banded by ability - 4 year summary 4. Subject value added overview 5. Teaching set overview All performance judgements in our KS4 reports are based on national and subject benchmarks using national data from the DfE. We have also used the national data to establish national minimum expected s, set at the 75th percentile. We have dedicated educational and technical support teams who are available from Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. You can contact us by phone on or you can us at info@alps-va.co.uk. 6 Alps KS4 - Performance indicators - an overview 1. Alps uses the complete national dataset from the Department for Education to create our benchmarks. 2. In this report are a number of indicators. There is no one Alps score that stands above the others they are all there to be used to help you analyse and improve performance at KS4. 3. The Alps KS4 Quality Indicator measure is an overall performance indicator that shows how your subject performance across all courses compares to the Alps national benchmark. This shows your overall subject performance compared to the rest of the country, regardless of changing national accountability rules. 4. The Alps QI8 Indicator is another overall performance indicator that shows how your students have performed across their best 8 subjects. The rules are similar, but not identical, to the Progress 8 rules and are set out below. This measure can give you a steer on your next Progress 8 performance judgment. For inclusion in our QI8 measure we apply the following rules to determine and weight the best 8 qualifications: GCSE mathematics is required and double weighted The best result from GCSE English language and GCSE English literature is required and double weighted 3 EBacc subjects are required The student s next best 3 GCSE / BTEC or Cambridge Level 1/2 National results are included The second English GCSE and any additional EBacc subjects taken can be counted within each student s next best 3 results BTEC First and Cambridge National subjects are given a weight of a maximum of 1 GCSE examination regardless of the qualification type If a student has completed fewer than 8 qualifying subjects after the rules above have been applied then the score is calculated using the smaller number of subjects taken Students who are entered for 3 or fewer qualifying subjects are excluded from this calculation GCSE short courses and Cambridge National Awards are not included Key differences to Progress 8 Alps is student-centred so we use the best achieved in a subject as opposed to applying first entry rules We will double weight the best English qualification whether or not the student has taken both English language and English literature The Progress 8 calculation will use the current year data to create its benchmark, whereas we will use the Alps benchmark fixed in a previous year enabling us to process your data for the start of the new academic year We are not including AS results in the KS4 report We will not be trying to precisely copy the constantly changing DfE rules about which qualifications do or do not count annually 5. The GCSE RED teaching and learning score is a measure of the proportion of your teaching across your GCSE subjects that is excellent or outstanding. It works by adding together the number of exam entries in your GCSE subjects that scored an Alps of 1, 2 or 3 and comparing this with the number of GCSE entries overall. 6. The GCSE BLUE teaching and learning score helps you gauge the proportion of your teaching across your GCSE subjects that is less than satisfactory, or poor. It works by adding together the number of exam entries in your GCSE subjects that scored an Alps of 7, 8 or 9 and comparing this with the number of GCSE entries overall. KS4 Alps report 2016 Alkemygold Ltd 6

7. The vocational RED teaching and learning score is a measure of the proportion of your teaching across your BTEC and Cambridge Level 1/2 National subjects that is excellent or outstanding. It works by adding together the number of exam entries in your BTEC subjects that scored an Alps of 1, 2 or 3 and comparing this with the number of vocational entries overall. 8. The vocational BLUE teaching and learning score helps you gauge the proportion of your teaching across your BTEC and Cambridge Level 1/2 National subjects that is less than satisfactory or poor. It works by adding together the number of exam entries in your BTEC subjects that scored an Alps of 7, 8 or 9 and comparing this with the number of vocational entries overall. 9. The Student Performance Overview (SPO) gives you a student level view of performance. It shows the each student achieved across their subjects. The s are colour coded to show if students have hit their Alps minimum expected s. The colour coding is as follows: RED Equal to or higher than the minimum expected. Split minimum expected s are RED when equal to or higher than the highest. PINK Only awarded when there is a split minimum expected. PINK is awarded for s equal to the lower split. BLACK 1 lower than the minimum expected. BLACK can only be awarded when there is not a split minimum expected. BLUE More than a full lower than the minimum expected. The SPO report is in Excel format on your myalps account. Having this report in Excel will allow you to manipulate and filter the data to allow incisive internal analysis. 10. An Alps score of 1.0 means that the KS4 performance matched the performance at the 75th percentile in the Alps benchmark. 11. At subject level, an Alps score of 1.0 indicates that students, on average, achieved the KS4 points at the 75th percentile. However, subject thermometers show that some students may need to exceed minimum expectations to match the top 25% for that subject. 12. Throughout this analytical section, there is a common grading system. This is: Matching top 25%+ RED Alps s 1-3 Matching middle 50% BLACK Alps s 4-6 Matching bottom 25%- BLUE Alps s 7-9 KS4 Alps report 2016 Alkemygold Ltd 7

In Section B, your school data is compared to the Alps benchmarks created from the full DfE national dataset. 2. There are 8 key indicators for you to consider, which should help you evaluate performance and set strategic priorities for improvement. Analysis of students banded by ability Quality Indicator QI8 measure Subject value added overview Teaching group overview Quality of teaching and learning measurement Single subject reports Student performance overview 3. Throughout this analytical section, there is a common grading system that works at three levels which are interlinked and allow a reader to look at the analysis at different depths. These are: Matching top 25%+ RED Alps s 1-3 Matching middle 50% BLACK Alps s 4-6 Matching bottom 25%- BLUE Alps s Colours RED means your performance is within or exceeds the top 25% of the KS4 benchmark for the indicator. BLUE means your performance is within or is worse than the bottom 25% of the KS4 benchmark for the indicator. 5. Alps s - basis of the grading system 1 100% 2 90% 3 75% 4 60% 5 40% 6 25% 7 10% 8 Bottom Alps 1 - better or equal to the best score achieved in the indicator - Outstanding ---- Alps 2 - scoring between the 90th and 99th percentile - Outstanding ---- Alps 3 - scoring between the 75th and 89th percentile - Excellent ---- Alps 4 - scoring between the 60th and 74th percentile - Very good ---- Alps 5 - scoring between the 40th and 59th percentile - Satisfactory to Good ---- Alps 6 - scoring between the 25th and 39th percentile - Below average ---- Alps 7 - scoring between the 10th and 24th percentile - Less than satisfactory ---- Alps 8 - scoring between the 1st and 9th percentile - Relatively poor ---- Alps 9 - scoring below the lowest score achieved in the indicator - Poor The challenge is to get out of the BLUE and move towards the RED. If you are already in the RED the challenge is to stay there. Continuous improvement is the underlying theme. KS4 Alps report 2016 Alkemygold Ltd 8

Alps KS4 - Input & output scores 1. The process we are looking at compares input data derived from students KS2 results with output data relating to results at KS4. 2. Input data The input data is the KS2 fine. The KS2 fine is calculated by the DfE by setting boundaries for mathematics and English KS2 tests. The fine is the average of the mathematics and the English reading and writing tests. This decimalised Key Stage 2 fine is also used as a baseline in the DfE Progress 8 measure and RAISEonline. 13 What an Alps score of 1.0 means in this report Using the national dataset supplied to Alps by the Department for Education (3,092 schools, 513,374 students, 5,256,492 GCSE, BTEC & Cambridge Level 1/2 Nationals taken) 1. The Alps benchmarks are created from the results of the complete national dataset supplied to Alps by the Department for Education. 2. The benchmark is used to create aspirational minimum expectations for all schools that are involved in using Alps systems to raise student and staff esteem and achievement. This will be used as a fixed point against which schools can measure themselves and their annual progress. 3. The Alps methodology is based on groups of students. On any benchmark thermometer within the report, if the Actual KS4 points equals the Expected KS4 points then the score will be 1.0. ( Actual KS4 points Expected KS4 points ) Alps measure = +1 Number of students # x 5 ~ # In some circumstances the number of students is replaced with the number of entries, for example with double awards. ~ This part of the denominator varies to maintain the concept that 0.2 = 1 per entry. 4. The Expected KS4 points are based on the performance of the top 25% of schools in each of the Alps average KS2 fine bands. The premise being that if the students in each ability band can achieve these outcomes then this should be the ambition for all students and staff. 5. A score of 1.0 for a year group in a school means that on average, across all subjects, students have achieved the expected KS4 points. This accurately reflects the quality of the school s student group measured relative to their KS2 fine s. Subject Entries Expected pts Actual pts Alps score Alps Subject A Subject B Subject C Subject D Totals Table 9 In Table 9 as the difference between the Total Expected points and the Total Actual points tends to zero, then when divided by the number of entries the Alps score will tend to At a subject level, an Alps score of 1.0 means that on average, students in this subject group achieved the expected KS4 points. However, subject thermometers show that some students will need to exceed their minimum expected s to match the top 25% of departments for that subject. It is essential that all staff understand their own subject thermometer, as performance management is based on the performance of the students in their subject compared to the subject s performance nationally, and not just the target s for students. KS4 Alps report 2016 Alkemygold Ltd 13

Alps KS4 - Explanation of a subject thermometer 1. Each Alps indicator has a benchmark thermometer. The thermometer is created by taking scores achieved by every school included in that indicator and ranking these from best (top) to worst (bottom). Scores at key percentiles are then used to benchmark your performance. Each percentile is also given an Alps. Alps s The numbers running down the centre of the thermometers show how Alps s are identified for this indicator. These run from 1 (best) to 9 (worst). The s are related exactly to the percentiles as shown % 2 90% 3 75% 4 60% 5 40% 6 25% 7 10% 8 Bottom Alps 1 - better or equal to the best score achieved in the indicator - Outstanding ---- Alps 2 - scoring between the 90th and 99th percentile - Outstanding ---- Alps 3 - scoring between the 75th and 89th percentile - Excellent ---- Alps 4 - scoring between the 60th and 74th percentile - Very good ---- Alps 5 - scoring between the 40th and 59th percentile - Satisfactory to Good ---- Alps 6 - scoring between the 25th and 39th percentile - Below average ---- Alps 7 - scoring between the 10th and 24th percentile - Less than satisfactory ---- Alps 8 - scoring between the 1st and 9th percentile - Relatively poor ---- Alps 9 - scoring below the lowest score achieved in the indicator - Poor The challenge is to get out of the BLUE and move towards the RED. If you are already in the RED the challenge is to stay there. Continuous improvement is the underlying theme. 2. Each provider will receive a subject analysis with a set of subject value added scores. This will show you exactly where your school is performing for each subject relative to the Department for Education national dataset for that subject, represented in the form of a thermometer on the next page. 3. The scale on the thermometer is created from the subject value added scores achieved by groups of generally 10+ taking the subject, collected from the national dataset. Numbers of groups vary by subject depending on its popularity nationally. However, where more than 15% of students are taught in groups of fewer than 10, we include a sufficient number of groups to make up to 85% of students taking the subject irrespective of size. 4. On the thermometer opposite, these scores are ranked from best to worst. 5. Scores are highlighted at key percentiles (90th, 75th, 60th, 40th, 25th etc.). You can see with your own score at what percentile you reside for each subject. KS4 Alps report 2016 Alkemygold Ltd 14

Alps KS4 - Subject value added scores at different percentiles 1. The tables on the following pages show subject value added scores at different percentiles for 158 GCSE and BTEC and Cambridge Level 1/2 National subjects. 2. Columns 5 to 13 show the scores achieved by the individual schools at a range of percentiles. 3. The challenge is to get to and consistently beat the score at the 75th percentile, and particularly to look for systematic change that gets you out of the BLUE region if that is where you are at present. Showing how this table takes account of subject variations nationally 4. This table provides targets for individual subjects that take account of the national variations in these subjects. It is clear that the 75th percentile score, for example, varies from subject to subject. The 75th percentile score for GCSE - English language is 1.03 which is the score of the English department placed 25% from the best score for that subject. For GCSE - environmental science, the equivalent score is As a difference of 0.20 represents exactly one per entry difference, and we have a difference of 0.10 here, then this suggests that a student with an equal flair for both will achieve half a less on average in GCSE - environmental science if both departments are operating at the level of the 75th percentile. 5. The table can be used to create reasonable departmental targets. A department can then look at systems for improvement. For example a school with a GCSE - English language score of 0.93 sits below the 25th percentile mark, 6/7 boundary. To move to 1.03, 3, requires an increase of Put another way, the students need, on average, to rise by just over half a to get to 1.03, an achievable and concrete target for improvement. 6. The question for the department then is what do we need to do to make the change happen? Applying this analysis to all departments provides the lever for continuous improvement. 7. Collectively, if we continuously improve incrementally in this way we can raise the s of a significant number of students which improves both their life chances and their self-esteem.
