2 DURBAN GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS POLICY ALL AWARDS ARE MADE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE AWARDS COMMITTEE Awards Committee: The Committee will consist of: The Headmistress Senior Deputy Principal Deputy Principal Deputy Principal Head of Cultural Activities Head of Sport Teacher representing Sport Teacher representing Cultural Activity Secretary (record keeping) Staff member representing specific area under discussion, if warranted. Presentation of Awards: Awards to be presented on the following occasions: Junior and Senior Speech Days Mini Prize Giving Ordinary assemblies at the discretion of the committee Meetings: Meetings are held at a time convenient to those concerned. They are called at least once a term. The records of minutes of all meetings must be available. General Guidelines: a) The criteria must be observed at all times unless there is a policy change as a result of a decision taken by consensus at a full meeting. b) Prospective awards are to be motivated in writing by the Teacher in charge of the relevant activity to the relevant Awards Committee member. All awards will be decided at a meeting of the Awards Committee. c) A pupil will only receive an award if she meets one of the following criteria: i) the activity is offered by the school and the pupil participates at school team level ii) the activity is offered at an inter-school level 1
3 iii) the activity is not offered by the school, but the pupil represents the school in at least another activity and shows a spirit of participation in the extracurricular program d) A pupil must be a good role model and display qualities of good sportsmanship, and show both commitment and enthusiasm. Awards will only be considered for a pupil whose support and behaviour have been exemplary and a credit to her school. e) Awards may be withdrawn if subsequent behaviour brings discredit to the school, or is deemed to be socially unacceptable. Decisions of this nature will be made by the Awards Committee on representation from the management of the school. f) Awards will only be given once the pupil has qualified / been selected and participated, with written notification from the Statutory Body governing that activity. g) Honours, Full Colours and Half Colours are awarded to pupils in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Junior Colours and Junior Merit Awards are awarded to pupils in Grades 8 and 9. h) A pupil must have sustained involvement and participation in the activity/activities that qualified her for the award and in order for her to retain the award. i) All Awards criteria can be revised and updated regularly by the Awards Committee. j) Minutes of the Awards meetings will be recorded. k) The Awards Committee reserves the right to decide and assess motivations for prospective awards that are outside the ambit of this awards policy. l) The Awards Committee reserves the right to apply the general principles set out in this document i.e. i) that representing South Africa will be awarded with Honours, ii) that representing the Province will be awarded with Colours, etc to all activities and codes not stipulated in this policy. 2
4 DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS Service Awards Merit Certificate Certificates of Achievement Junior Colours Re-awards Half-Colours Colours Honours Certificate given to Grade 12 pupils at the final Grade 12 Speech Day for sustained contribution to various aspects of school activity, e.g. Drama; Music; Public Speaking; Sport. Certificate with MERIT CERTIFICATE typed onto it. In the case of Sport / Cultural Merit Award name of Sport or Cultural activity typed onto it. To be given with Sporting / Cultural Trophies. Certificate with ACHIEVEMENT AWARD & the Sport / Cultural Activity to be typed onto it. Certificate with JUNIOR & name of Sport or Cultural activity typed onto it. Certificate with FULL / HALF OR RE-AWARD typed onto it. Braid around edge of blazer pockets and above the end of sleeves. Scroll under school badge of pocket. Braid around edge of blazer, pockets and above the end of sleeves. Scroll under school badge of pocket. Honours braid around edge of blazer, pockets and above the end of sleeves. 5 ACADEMIC AWARDS Grades 8-11 Awards are based on the promotion mark of the year and are presented at Junior Speech Day in February / March of the following year. Grade 12 Awards are based on Term 1, Term 2 and Trials marks and presented at Senior Speech Day. For Grades 10, 11 and 12 if a learner has more than the prescribed 7 subjects, awards are based on the 7 best marks as prescribed by the department for promotion purposes. Marks in all these subjects must be assessed to the Durban Girls High School standards.
