1 HARDING CHARTER PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL AUGUST 2017 NEWSLETTER The academic year was a great success! Congratulations to all our community on being awarded the Best Charter School of the Year 2017 by Choice Matters. Additionally, congratulations to the Harding Charter Preparatory community on being ranked the #1 Public High School in Oklahoma and the only Oklahoma high school ranked #111 nationally according to the Washington Post!!! This ranking demonstrates the hard work of everyone involved, especially our students! Great job to our students on performing very well on state testing and AP testing! A record number of students took Advanced Placement (AP) tests last spring (a total of 665 AP tests)! Earning college credit while in high school, that s what HCP is all about. Way to go Eagles!!! We have some new faces and familiar friends rejoining us on the faculty team this year. Gemma Defee-Cooper will be our new AP Government teacher. Monika Merriman will be our new Pre-AP Bio., Pre-AP Chem., and AP Environmental science teacher. Jami Mumford will be our new Pre-AP English II teacher. Taylor Ponder will be the new Honors Oklahoma History/World Geography teacher. Jacquelyn Musgrove will be the new Photography and AVID teacher. Daniel Clark will be our new AP U.S. History teacher. De Ericka Givings will be our new Vocal Music/Humanities teacher. 2 Upcoming Events PAGE 2 Summer Reading All summer reading assignments are due Wednesday, August 16th, the first day of school. Freshmen Orientation is Monday, August 7 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. During the day you will receive your schedule, check out your books, choose your locker, and become familiar with the Harding facility. Breakfast will be provided. Dress casual and bring excitement, because this is the beginning of your time as an Eagle! You will also get a chance to have a question and answer session with Student Council officers, clubs, and sport representatives. The day will begin at the front of the school, where Student Council representatives will guide you. The daytime activities are designed for students only. Freshmen Parent meeting A special Freshmen Parent meeting will be held Monday, August 7 at 7 pm in the Auditorium. This is designed for Parents, but students are welcome and encouraged to attend as well. Also, the following items will be on sale during the day, August 7, at the New Parent meeting. Student Agendas $8 (required) Student dictionaries $8 (required for freshmen and new students) Class T-Shirts - $10 (optional) For those students taking Art and/or Photography the following required items should be purchased as well: Art Supplies (Art I, 3-D Art, painting) $40 for each art class you are taking. Photography chemical fee $30 for each photography class you are taking. Schedule Pickup Day August 14th Seniors - 9am-10am Juniors - 10:30am-11:30am Sophomores - 1:30pm-2:30pm Make up time for all grades - 2:30pm-3:00pm Please remember NO schedules will be given out before your class appointed time! If your student has a financial obligation from the school year their schedule will be held until this obligation has been cleared. 3 Upcoming Events PAGE 3 Parent Meeting Dates for August Freshmen Parents meet Aug. 7th at 7pm in the Auditorium. Senior Parents meet Aug. 17th at 7pm in the Auditorium. Sophomore and Junior Parents meet Aug. 24th at 7pm in the Auditorium. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - August 16th Parent Workday - August 19th, 9-noon HCPPO Meeting - August 15th 6:00pm in the Auditorium Howdy Dance - August 25th Open House - August 31st 7pm-9pm Uniform Closet The Parent Organization is hosting the uniform closet. Drop off any uniforms at 8am-3pm in the front office before August 7th. August 7th- Buy uniforms at 3-7pm in the Cafeteria. Bring any old uniforms that no longer fit and you will be given credit based on the condition of the uniforms to the front office. August 7th, you can use that credit to buy uniforms that other people have donated. Also, on August 7th, from 5pm to 7pm you can buy used uniforms with cash only. Also, you will be able to buy used uniforms on Monday, August 14th, all day during schedule pick up, inside the front doors. HOWDY DANCE Come out and welcome incoming students and rekindle friendships at the Howdy Dance. It will be held on Friday, August 25th in the Gym from 7pm-10pm. Donations and Volunteers are needed!! Yearbook Photos Yearbook photographs will be Friday, August 25th through the English classes. Students need to ensure to look their best and come with a shining smile! 4 PAGE 4 Important Notes Please remember that your child s immunizations need to be up-to-date before school begins on August 16th. The immunization requirements for the school year can be obtained from the Oklahoma State Department of Health. They can be reached by phone at The requirements can also be found on the internet at and then by clicking on the link Get My Child Immunized ; on this page there will be options on the left and click on Immunizations for School. If you have any questions feel free to call us at the school at Free/Reduced Lunch Please bring your free/reduced lunch applications with you or your student on their schedule pick up day, freshmen parents may also bring the application with them to the Parent Meeting Aug.7th. HCP Parent Workday Dates (9:00am 12:00 noon) Saturday Aug. 5 Saturday Sept. 9 Saturday Oct. 7 Saturday Nov. 4 Saturday Jan. 13 Saturday Feb. 3 Saturday Mar. 3 Saturday Apr. 7 Athletics Congratulations to Allison Williams, Carolyn Eakers-Jarrett, and Katelynn McLaughlin on being awarded the All-City Prep Sports Award for soccer, tennis, and cross-country! The All-City Sports Awards recognizes the best Oklahoma City Metro Area athletes for their on-field achievements, academic achievement and community involvement. Speech and Debate HCP junior-to-be Nikita Lewchuk competed in the NSDA Speech & Debate National Tournament held in Birmingham, AL from June Competitors at Nationals represent the top 3% of the Nation. Nikita competed in Original Oratory, a memorized 10-minute speech written by the student. Nikita finished 62nd out of 245, and was 2 spots outside of advancing to further competition. This was the best Nationals performance by an HCP student in three appearances since Coaches Ferguson and Boomer judged 14 rounds of various events, including Coach Ferguson being selected to judge a National Seminfinal in Impromptu speaking. The team in looking forward to the season beginning in September and hopefully culminating in more students competing and advancing further at the 2018 National tournament in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

5 PAGE 5 News from the Library Media Center Looking to get some volunteer hours? Volunteer Hours for Textbook Checkout August 4th from 8am 1pm (come and go as you can). August 7th from 8am 3pm (come and go as you can). Report to the media center to help check out everyone's textbooks. Textbooks will be picked up on schedule pick-up day! - Please encourage students to avoid trading books with others, and to print their names inside the front cover of each book. - Using textbook covers is a good way to avoid textbook damages and fines at the end of the school year. (The ones made from paper grocery bags work well.) Thank you! Saturday School A great opportunity for your student to receive extra academic support over the weekend. An English and Math teacher will be available for any questions, as well as the computers. Saturday School runs from 9:00am 12:00pm in the HCP Media Center. Parent Organization News WELCOME TO ALL NEW AND RETURNING PARENTS! The first Harding Charter Prep Parent Organization Meeting is Tuesday, August 15th at 6-7pm in the Auditorium. We are looking forward to seeing new faces along with the returning parents. We encourage ALL parents to join the organization for $5 annual fee and to attend the monthly meetings. Memberships to HCPPO are to help fund projects in the school. Please see a volunteer at any parent meeting or the Parent Organization meeting to pay dues and sign up to help with any of our committees or upcoming events. Minutes from our last meeting are on the website and have all the Committees and Events listed along with general information about each. The purpose of our Parent Organization is to support the educational, academic and service goals of Harding Charter Preparatory High School. Our various committees, which are all chaired by PARENTS, help us to accomplish these goals. See you soon! Volunteer hours! An easy way to earn part of 25 required parent hours is to donate Kleenex and copy paper. For every $20.00 worth of donated supplies, you will earn one volunteer hour. There is also a need for cough drops, Clorox wipes and anything else you think a school could use. Please bring these items to the office and we will have a log-in sheet located there for you to use.
