Part A and Part B 1 Allow 1 credit or each correct response Part A Part B Updated inormation regarding the rating o this examination may be posted on the New York State Education Department s web site during the rating period. Visit the site and select the link Latest Inormation or any recently posted inormation regarding this examination. This site should be checked beore the rating process or this examination begins and at least one more time beore the inal scores or the examination are recorded.

3 Directions to the Teacher Follow the procedures below or scoring student answer papers or the Physical Setting/Physics examination. Additional inormation about scoring is proided in the publication Inormation or Administering and Scoring Regents Examinations in the Sciences. Use only red ink or red pencil in rating Regents papers. Do not attempt to correct the student s work by making insertions or changes o any kind. On the detachable answer sheet or Part A and Part B 1, indicate by means o a checkmark each incorrect or omitted answer. In the box proided at the end o each part, record the number o questions the student answered correctly or that part. Students responses must be scored strictly according to the Scoring Key and Rating Guide. For open-ended questions, credit may be allowed or responses other than those gien in the rating guide i the response is a scientiically accurate answer to the question and demonstrates adequate knowledge as indicated by the examples in the rating guide. Fractional credit is not allowed. Only whole-number credit may be gien to a response. Units need not be gien when the wording o the questions allows such omissions. Raters should enter the scores earned or Part A, Part B 1, Part B, and Part C on the appropriate lines in the box printed on the answer booklet, and then should add these our scores and enter the total in the box labeled Total Written Test Score. Then, the student s raw score on the written test should be conerted to a scaled score by using the conersion chart that will be posted on the Department s web site: on Wednesday, June 16, 004. The student s scaled score should be entered in the labeled box on the student s answer booklet. The scaled score is the student s inal examination score. All student answer papers that receie a scaled score o 60 through 64 must be scored a second time. For the second scoring, a dierent committee o teachers may score the student s paper or the original committee may score the paper, except that no teacher may score the same open-ended questions that he/she scored in the irst rating o the paper. The school principal is responsible or assuring that the student s inal examination score is based on a air, accurate, and reliable scoring o the student s answer paper. Because scaled scores corresponding to raw scores in the conersion chart may change rom one examination to another, it is crucial that or each administration, the conersion chart proided or that administration be used to determine the student s inal score. This publication can be ound on the NYS Education Department web site at Teachers should become amiliar with this guide beore rating students papers. Scoring Criteria or Calculations For each question requiring the student to show all calculations, including the equation and substitution with units, apply the ollowing scoring criteria: Allow 1 credit or the equation and substitution o alues with units. I the equation and/or substitution with units is not shown, do not allow this credit. Allow 1 credit or the correct answer (number and unit). I the number is gien without the unit, do not allow this credit. Penalize a student only once per equation or omitting units. Allow ull credit een i the answer is not expressed with the correct number o signiicant igures. Part B 47 Allow a maximum o credits or calculating the speed o the car. Conersion charts proided or preious administrations o the Regents Examination in Physical Setting/Physics must NOT be used to determine students inal scores or this administration. [1]
