13 UNDERSTANDING GRADES/GPA Fulton County uses Numeric Grade Average Most Colleges (and HOPE) use GPA Weighted v. Unweighted Estimating GPA For each final grade on the transcript, assign the following point values: A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 F = 0 Add up all the points and divide by the number of classes Do not round up (ex: 2.85 doesn t round to a 3.0) Important to move borderline grades to a higher letter grade
14 UNDERSTANDING HOPE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP HOPE GRANT HOPE GPA of 3.0 or greater to qualify Approximately 2/3rds tuition at a public GA university. For students seeking a technical certificate or diploma regardless of high school GPA Zell Miller 100% Tuition Paid 3.7 HOPE GPA and earn a 1200 on the math and critical reading sections of the SAT or an ACT composite of a 26 There is no longer an allowance for books and fees. Must have a 2.0 at certain checkpoints Pays a percentage of tuition depending on the college. HOPE GPA doesn t include elective grades or honors points. An extra.5 is added to AP/IB courses on a 4.0 scale Zell Miller Grant pays 100% of tuition if student has a 3.5 previous semester Go to for detailed information.
15 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS IB is an internationally infused program that is considered one of the most rigorous programs a student can complete in high school. Students apply spring of their sophomore year. Students participate in this program 11 th and 12 th grade year. Students can complete the program and receive an IB diploma or take a few IB courses and earn IB certificates. Considered college level courses. Students can earn college credit based on IB test scores. Curriculum provided through College Board College level courses taken in high school and taught by a trained high school teacher. Must pass AP exam with a 3-5 to earn college credit. Scores needed to earn credit depends on college. Can take courses 9-12 grade 9 th grade-ap Government Advanced Level Courses Honors/Gifted Advanced Placement (AP) College Courses(MOWR) IB Courses Focuses on International Studies Aligns with Riverwood s IB Programme. In grades 10 and 11, students take additional courses focusing on cultural exposure. Additional World Language and Social/Global Studies credits taken Completion of the MYP Personal Project Earns students a seal of distinction on their diploma, special recognition at graduation. MAINTAIN ELIGIBILITY: Maintain a minimum of an 80 average in magnet courses. 70 or better in all other courses No major discipline/attendance infractions Seven (7) additional points are added at the end of each semester to passing grades in advanced level courses. *Student can receive college credit.
