1 School District of Lee County Advanced High School Programs of Study Application- IB/AICE Applications must be received at the appropriate Cambridge (AICE) or International Baccalaureate (IB) school in your zone between January 22, 2018 and February 16, Applications may be submitted in person or by mail. Any application received for a program out of zone will be routed to the appropriate zone school. Parents will be notified via letters of acceptance or denial into the AICE or IB program starting March 9, Parents must submit the letter of intent back to the appropriate school postmarked by March 23, Parents may accept enrollment in only one advanced program of study. Please note: Parents must complete a student assignment application with the Lee County Student Assignment Office either in person or at studentassignment.leeschools.net and attach the receipt to this application. Any student accepted into an AICE or IB program will not be officially assigned to the corresponding school in his/her zone until an intent form is signed by the incoming student and his/her parent or guardian. 2 FAQ- Cape Coral High School I.B. Program What is the admissions process to be accepted into IB? Submit your Student Assignment Application with the Lee County Student Assignment Office Complete IB Application and return to Cape Coral High School IB Office along with the following items: Word Essay Student Assignment Receipt Most recent report card All applications must be received between January 22, 2018 and February 16, 2018 When will I find out if I am accepted in the IB Program? All applicants will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance starting March 9, Students will have until March 23, 2017 to return an Intent Form, which will void your Student Assignment Application and ensure your seat at Cape Coral High School How are applicants evaluated? Applicants will be evaluated based upon grades, standardized test scores, and the essay. Students who do not have test scores, or who do not fully satisfy the test score requirement (a level 4 on the FSA reading and /or Math) will be evaluated holistically. o The academic record, attendance, disciplinary history, and teacher input may be considered. Who should apply to be an IB student? People who are curious about their world, who want to be among the best, and want a challenge are ideal candidates for the IB Program. The DP is a rigorous course of study for motivated students. That being said, prior academic success is less an indicator of ability to earn the diploma than a student s determination to do his or her best. Students who demonstrate a willingness to complete the work while leading a full, balanced life, and a strong commitment to learning in and beyond the classroom are the ideal candidates for the IB Program. What will a student s schedule look like while in the IB Program? Students enroll in the Pre-Diploma in grades nine and ten and then advance to IB in grades eleven and twelve. During the Pre-Diploma (or Pre-IB) years students will take a mixture of high honors and AP classes. While IB does have this defined course structure, it offers a high level of flexibility, while maintaining a rigorous academic path. Students will select the math and science course best suited toward their needs, an IB as an area of focus, and open electives, which allow for development of other interests. 3 Can I still be involved in sports, clubs, and other activities? Absolutely! Most successful IB students lead very full lives. IB requires students to do more than just academic coursework. This is why so many students develop exceptional time management skills. IB students are among the most active students at Cape Coral High School. They can be seen as the leaders in sports, clubs, and organizations within the community. We expect all members of our IB family to grow in academic and non-academic ways. What is the difference between Cape High s pre-ib Program and IB Program? The Pre-IB Program at CCHS is offered to students in grades 9-10, to establish a foundation for success in the Diploma Program. Time is taken to develop academic skills. How much homework can I expect as an IB student? On average, students should expect to dedicate 90 minutes each day to homework, studying, and practice. Do I have to maintain certain grades in order to remain in the IB Program? Academic success is the most important factor to ensure. Students are required to maintain an unweighted GPA of at least a 3.0. Students who fall below this level will be offered support or may be encouraged to find an alternative educational path. What percentage of pre-ib students complete the IB Program? We expect that about 75% of students will complete the IB Program. What happens if I choose the exit the IB Program? Students who have completed four semesters are allowed to continue at Cape Coral High School. Otherwise, students must submit a new Student Assignment Application. Can I get the same benefits from other college preparatory options such as AICE, AP, or DE? Simply put, the answer is no. IB is the only option where: Research is embedded in every courses. IB is better known throughout the US than AICE. It is more highly regarded for rigor than any other option. Coursework in 6 subject groups provides a well-rounded foundation. Oral presentations and commentaries are conducted. Students become more comfortable speaking in front of groups and to adults. Non-academic components are valued and embedded within the program.. What are the other benefits of the IB Program at CCHS? Being around fellow students who have a passion for learning will drive many to strive for excellence. The IB program at Cape Coral High School encourages a collegial spirit, offering the benefits of smaller, family oriented program, within the larger structure of the school. Greater opportunity to develop relationships with peers and with teachers. Older students have developed a tutoring and mentoring program to support their younger peers. Parents appreciate the active IB Parent Organization. The IBPO works to support our students and their parents throughout the high school experience. This year, the IBPO has sponsored student socials, organized cultural celebrations, held a seminar on college admissions, hosted a service fair community, and conducted sessions on study techniques. Do IB Diploma recipients qualify for Bright Futures? Students who earn the IB Diploma automatically qualify for the highest level of the Bright Futures Scholarship. For those students who sit for IB Exams, but do not earn the diploma, they can still qualify by meeting the grade and SAT / ACT requirement. How many college credits can I receive through the IB Program? Colleges and Universities determine their own policies for awarding credits to incoming students. These policies are always quite transparent and can be easily accessed through simple searches of a university name along with the phrase IB Credit. At the public universities within the state of Florida, IB students are eligible for up to 45 credits. The official IB website also has an acceptance sheet by college for 2117 colleges worldwide. What if I do not pass an IB exam or don t receive the IB Diploma? Do I lose all credit? Students will receive college credits for the exams where a passing score is earned, regardless of Diploma Status. Even when a student does not earn the IB Diploma, they have gained a valuable educational experience that will make the transition to the next level much easier. The high school diploma is not impacted in any way. Who can I contact with questions? 4 10 Reasons why the IB Diploma Programme (DP) is ideal preparation for university 1 2 IB students care about more than just results It increases academic opportunity Research*shows that DP graduates are much more likely to be enrolled at top higher education institutions than entrants holding other qualifications. Through creativity, action, service (CAS) you learn outside the classroom and develop emotionally and ethically as well as intellectually. It encourages you to become a confident and independent learner For example, the extended essay requires independent research through an in-depth study. 5 6 The IB encourages critical thinking Learn how to analyse and evaluate issues, generate ideas and consider new perspectives. Graduates are globally minded 4 Language classes encourage an international mindset, key for increasingly globalized societies. It s an international qualification The DP is recognized globally by universities and employers. 9 7 DP students have proven time management skills Take good study habits and strong time management to further education and the working world. 3 8 Subjects are not taught in isolation Theory of knowledge (TOK) classes encourage you to make connections between subjects. 10 It encourages breadth and depth of learning You are able to choose courses from six subject groups and study subjects at different levels. 5 What current students have to say about their involvement in the IB Program: I.B. has pushed me above and beyond my "limits." I would have never thought I would accomplish some of the things I have if it wasn't for the program. I.B. reminds me everyday that I do have the potential to be the type of person I want to be. It has allowed me to see that a person is more than his/her grades; that behind every achievement, there is a strenuous effect made that makes a person who they are and makes it all worth it. You should take any advantage you have in high school to set yourself apart from everyone else and this provides you with that opportunity. The comprehensive framework develops your curiosity and takes that curiosity one step further with practical application of interests in IA's, EE's and an engaging classroom experience.
