1 CIS HEADLINES Upcoming Events May 8 May 8 May 9 May 11 May 11 May 13 May 13 On Friday morning, a battalion of bikes and scooters lined the corridors of our Early Childhood classrooms in readiness for Ride-a-Palooza! Accompanied by their teachers, children from Nursery through PreK4 strapped on their helmets and saddled up to enjoy an hour of fresh air, sunshine, and exercise here on the CIS campus. In addition to learning about the importance of fun physical activity, the children had a chance to practice what they know about bicycle/scooter safety. After the ride, each child enjoyed a refreshing popsicle. It was a fun filled activity for sure! Congratulations to all CIS Athletes who participated in the first annual CIS Triathlon, You Gotta Tri! There were over 140 participants this year! Wow! Students had a lot of fun at the event and challenged themselves physically. Individual students completed the entire triathlon and other students were a part of a team. 2 CIS COMMUNITY NEWS Page 2 Next week CIS students will continue taking the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment for math. The reading portion ran smoothly, and we look forward to another successful week. The average time for each MAP test is an hour. However, it is not a timed assessment, and each child will be given the necessary amount of time to complete each section. Additional preparation and studying is neither necessary nor required prior to taking the MAP test. This year the following teams are competing for the two BOB trophies that are passed to the winning teams each year. CIS is proud to support students from Ms. Darcy s and Mr. Jason s class with Ms. Leanne W-G!). These students have worked very hard since September, reading and memorizing facts from 30 different books. The event is at Sir John A Cumber Elementary in West Bay from 9:00am to 1:00pm, Saturday, May 9th. Stop by for even just one battle if you can and support our kiddos! And, if you find that you are interested in mentoring a group next year (like Ms. Leanne), please let us know. We hope that we can get more kids interested next year it is open for grades 5-12! Have a big bag of books that you need to find a new home for? CIS will be hosting a book swap on Monday, May 25 th in the MPR. If you are interested in receiving new books, please bring all of your gently used books to the library from May 18 th - May 22 nd. You will receive a ticket for the number of books that you bring in. Students are then invited to stop by after their dismissal, accompanied by an adult, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm on May 25 th. Donations must be children s or young adult literature.

3 CIS COMMUNITY NEWS Page 3 Congratulations to NATHAN M, grade 9, for being selected as a finalist in the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman's Adventures in Citizenship Essay Competition. As a selected finalist, Nathan will have the opportunity to visit the Legislative Assembly, the Courthouse, and if selected as the top winner, will have lunch with Her Excellency, The Governor. Congratulations, Nathan! Last Friday the CIS Geo Rocks team faced off against Cayman Prep and Hope Academy for the Final Challenge. Sadie F. and Natalie S. represented CIS and demonstrated outstanding knowledge during the final round. The questions were very challenging. Cayman Prep took the lead in the early questions, and the girls came back and finished strong, winning the final round The event was sponsored by The Water Authority, and along with a trophy, each student received a generous gift card from Books and Books. This was the inaugural year of the Geo Rocks Challenge which is part of a worldwide program offered by The National Geographic. We hope to make it even bigger next year and will be recruiting more team members in the fall. On Friday May 8, Niklas W, Erik B, Zoe B and Olivia F participated in the annual Minds Inspired Math Challenge held at UCCI. The event consisted of 8 individual rounds of questions and one team round where students from different schools were grouped together to answer separate questions. CIS performed extremely well, with Niklas winning top overall prize, and Erik winning top prize for his age group. Great job!

Sincerely, the PTA" Dearest Parents, The end of 2014/15 school year is rapidly approaching, and you are invited to the PTA s final general meeting on Tuesday June 2nd, 1:00pm to 2:00pm. At this meeting we will provide a brief review of the PTA s work this year, share upcoming plans for our healthy school initiatives (playground enhancements, etc.) and take nominations for the 2015/16 PTA Board! For the 2015/16 Board, we will be seeking nominations for the following roles: President, Vice President and Event Planning, and we would certainly consider other ways for parents who may not have as much time to commit to be involved. Keeping in line with the PTA's mission, which is "to build community and promote school spirit in ways that enhance our children s educational environment," the PTA meets once per month, for 1-hour, and discusses various ways in which the it can be involved and support the school community. Thank you to Ragazzi, Calypso Grill and Gelato and Co. for their delicious and generous donations! Also, a huge thank you to our students and staff for making and donating their lovely ceramic bowls. Finally, thank you to the entire CIS community who came out to donate to our fundraiser to help FILL CAYMAN S EMPTY BOWLS!

6 Page 6 SECONDARY HEADLINES IB Exams Grade 12 students started their IB exams this week, and the exams will continue for the next few weeks. This is a milestone for our grade 12 students. We wish them all the best. CIS community when you see grade 12 students around campus, please offer them a few words of encouragement and inspiration. Transition Meetings Parents On Monday, May 11, CIS will meet with students to discuss the transition from elementary school (grade 5) to middle school (grade 6) and from middle school (grade 8) to high school (grade 9). On Wednesday, May 13, we will also host transition support meetings for parents. The transition meeting for grade 5 parents is at 5:30pm in the MPR, and the transition meeting for grade 8 parents is at 6:45pm in the MPR. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information, guidance, and support that will ensure a smooth transition to the next educational program at CIS. Homework Club Students and Parents Homework Club is offered at CIS every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Homework Club is from 3:30pm to 4:30pm and meets in D3 Mondays, Science Lab 2 Wednesdays, and D2 Thursdays.

7 Page 7 Seen on Campus In their Habitat Unit the Essential Question is: How do animals adapt to survive in their natural habitats? Our first graders answered that question through independent research using their ipads to access and navigate websites such as Pebbbego.com, Brainpopjr.com, and Animals A-Z. They began their quest by deciding which animal interests them and then researched that animal, its adaptations, and habitat, using the internet and nonfiction books. Students compiled the information and then completed a written research report to prepare them for their final project. Using a variety of media, each student created a poster project depicting their animal in its natural habitat. Our first graders are thrilled to share their projects with their peers, parents, and the CIS community!
