3 9 th Grade Parent Activity Form a small group with your neighbors Try to meet someone completely new Introduce yourself and share: Your student s name The middle school your student came from One joy of raising a teenager One challenge of raising a teenager Use the slips of paper provided to write down a question your group would like answered from this information session Hold questions until the end if they haven t been answered, we will address them in the Q & A

5 Kennedy Catholic Counseling Department Academic Personal/Social College and Career Our conversations are confidential between student & counselor unless someone s safety is at risk or we suspect abuse. Students can sign up for a meeting on appointment sheets outside office doors; parents can call or to schedule a meeting. Our goal is to meet with all freshmen students before Christmas break to introduce ourselves and make a personal connection individually or in a small group.

This can be met by: Math class during senior year Algebra-based science class during senior year Waived if pre-calculus is completed by junior year

Use the NCAA sliding scale to meet SAT/ACT test score requirements. Graduate from high school!

16 Paving the Way for Success: FRESHMAN STUDENTS Academics 1) Check grades online with Skyward (every other week). 2) Use the student planner. 3) Ask for help from teachers/use tutoring options. MATH LAB 3-4 PM: Mon. & Wed. (Room B226) Tuesday (Room B167-2) LANCER ACADEMY: Mon Thurs. 2:45-4 (Library) Library open until 6 PM (Mon Fri) 4) Form regular homework, study, and sleep habits.

17 Paving the Way for Success: FRESHMAN STUDENTS Personal/Social: 1) Find a club, sport, or social group to connect with other students. 2) Talk to a counselor or teacher if you are feeling overwhelmed!

18 Paving the Way for Success: FRESHMAN PARENTS 1) Check grades online with Skyward (every other week). - Contact Mrs. Peterson for log-in at petersonp@kennedyhs.org 2) Work with teachers directly for classroom concerns. - Students should first advocate for him/herself. - If parent involvement is necessary after the student has talked to his/her teacher, parent should contact: - Teacher, then (if needed) - Counselor, then (if needed) - Academic Dean (Ms. Clark) 3) Help your students set up a routine/study environment. - Work together on a schedule time for school, sleep, meals, and fun!

19 Paving the Way for Success: FRESHMAN PARENTS 4) Be supportive & positive about school. - School and transitions are hard! 5) Help them handle the tough times, but don t do it for them. - Remind students it s OK to have a teacher you don t like, a rigorous class, or an awkward social moment. Offer support, but also give them a chance to navigate on their own and build skills. 6) Monitor their digital devices. - Students can get distracted, lose sleep, and develop drama with social media. Be informed of their activities! 7) Pay attention to any changes in behavior. - Significant changes (eating, sleeping, isolation) may be a concern.
