6 Edline Edline is the place for class assignments, grades, interim reports, and attendance reports. s parents when new grades are posted Secure and password protected access for students and parents Middle School Edline accounts do not transfer to Northwood, so incoming 9 th grade parents must create a new Northwood Edline account.

7 Family Connection Family Connection is a valuable website that can help students: Search for colleges, research careers Locate scholarships Use scattergrams to analyze admissions information at specific colleges See the list of upcoming college visits in the College/Career Center Apply to colleges Complete a Career Interest Inventory Complete a Resume

8 Student Health Services No cost to Northwood families Services include, but are not limited to: diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems sports physicals comprehensive physical exams immunizations lab services confidential health counseling After-School Youth Groups Case Management Services (Individual & Family) Mental Health Services Current hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM. If you are interested in playing sports in the fall, practices start on August 17 th. Information will be posted on the Northwood Athletics website. 10 January Middle school teachers entered recommendations for students in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, & Foreign Language. February Students received registration cards Parents/Students return registration card to middle school counselor. Registration cards are sent to the high school.

11 The 8 th grade teams from all 9 middle schools meet with high school counselors and administrators to review course placement. These meetings occur in early April. The team examines the following data: MAP-R scores, MSA scores, grades Changes to course recommendations may be made at this meeting.

12 A course verification letter listing your child s course selections will be mailed home in April. Any changes made during articulation will be reflected in this letter. June 1 st is the deadline for students to return course requests with any changes or corrections. If there are no changes or corrections, there is no need to return this verification letter. Change requests after this date are not guaranteed.

13 Students received the following materials at the middle school registration visits last week: Northwood Course Registration Booklet MCPS Course Bulletin Registration Card (with recommendations)

16 Earn at least 22 credits (that must include the following): 4 English 3 Science (including Biology, Physical Science, and an elective science) 3 Social Studies (US History A/B, NSL Government A/B, and Modern World History A/B) 4 Mathematics (including Algebra, Geometry, any 2 elective math credits) 1 Physical Education.5 Health 1 Fine Arts 1 Technology Education Completer Program (must do one of the following) 2 credits Foreign Language 2 credits Advanced Technology Education 3-9 credits Career Development Program Complete Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours Pass three high school assessments

17 Many colleges require at least two years of study in the same foreign language in high school. Some prefer more. Many colleges require Chemistry and/or Physics. Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive colleges require or recommend four years.

18 We have an 8 period block schedule. Classes are approximately 85 minutes long. Students take 4 classes on A days and 4 on B days. Students will take courses in the 4 core subjects: English, Math, Science, Social Studies. Students complete their schedules with courses in the following areas: Music, Art, Technology, Physical Education, and Foreign Language.

20 Students can earn high school credit for high school courses taken in middle school, if they pass both semesters and the final exam. Some examples of these courses are foreign language courses, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Students must PASS the FINAL EXAM in order to receive credit for these classes. Applicable Middle school courses appear on the high school transcript and are factored into the cumulative grade point average.

21 Students have the option of repeating a course taken in MS for HS credit in order to have the MS course and grade removed from the transcript. The higher grade will remain on the transcript. The grade will only appear ONCE on the transcript. 9th grade is the best year to repeat a course taken in middle school.

22 Select Courses Carefully Remember your Graduation Requirements, (PE, Fine Art, Tech Ed, Program Completer) Select alternate courses and circle them on the registration card Parents and students sign the registration card Return the registration card to your middle school counselor by Friday, February 15 th. Get an Edline and Family Connection Account when you arrive at Northwood
