1 Competitive advantage in college admissions Eighty-five percent of selective colleges and universities report that a student s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions. There is a great deal of focus out there on GPA and ACT/SAT scores, which are important, but course rigor is also a main factor in admissions decisions. College credit for qualifying AP Exam scores Many colleges and universities offer credit or advanced standing for a score of 3+ on AP Exams. Many colleges and universities assign their course registration windows according to the number of credits a student has. Coming in with credit through AP often gives an advantage for future class registrations. Financial benefits Success on AP tests saves the student (and parents) time and money at the post-secondary level as they will not have to take those courses (or electives) at their college or university. Research also shows that students who take AP are much more likely than their peers to complete a college degree on time. Greater course depth Students have the opportunity to dig deeper into subjects that interest them, develop advanced research and communication skills, and learn to tap their creative, problem-solving, and analytical potential. Preparation for college-level work AP courses give students access to rigorous college-level work. AP students build confidence and learn the essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success. Who do I talk to if I am interested in taking an AP course at MHS? The best place to start is the student s current teacher in that subject area. They see that student s learning style and potential in their specific subject and are the best predictors of success at the AP level. If you have doubts about the student s ability to succeed in an AP course it can also be a good idea to talk to the teacher of the AP course; they can give you a concrete idea of what to expect. Lastly, the student s School Counselor can be a great support in terms of ensuring that the student s course load is well balanced and they are not taking on too much.
