1 Kell High School Rising 10 th, 11 th, 12 th Elective Courses Descriptions KELL SCHEDULE Kell High School will move to a modified hybrid block schedule. L = ear Long Courses that meet every other day for the entire school year on A day or B Day = ear Courses that meet every day for a semester (Both A and B days).5 = Half a semester courses that meet for 45 days of the semester and part of a required pair (Ex. Before you begin the elective registration process, you should be aware that students register for the ENTIRE SCHOOL EAR at one time during the March registration period. Read over all of the elective course descriptions to become familiar with courses that will be offered. Be sure to pay close attention to L-courses, -courses, and.5-courses taken for 45 days during a semester. 2. Write down the (4) core courses (1 each from English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) for which you were recommended by your teacher and have at least four (4) elective courses in mind to help you fill out your sample schedule as well as some alternates. Choose alternate electives wisely as it is very likely one or more will end up on your schedule. 3. *Students who do not complete the registration process will have their courses for next year selected for them by Administration and Counseling. Requests for schedule changes will not be honored. 4. ou are allowed a maximum of one PE course per semester. 5. Please keep in mind that many A/B courses come with a pre-determined pairing. For example, if you sign up for Honors Spanish IV, you will automatically have AP Spanish V paired with it as well. Other A/B pairings offer options, so please be mindful of what those options are. 6. Courses selected during registration should be considered final. Students will have the opportunity to review their schedules and request changes during schedule preview prior to the end of this school year. Please understand that it is not possible to honor requests for specific teachers, lunch periods or class placement within the day. The last day to request schedule changes for the academic year will be during schedule previews in April/May.

5 CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) GRAPHIC DESIGN Intro to Graphics & Design will teach you all about graphic design how to use Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. Learn to create custom graphics, publications, and how to make your own t-shirt design. This class meets everyday for a single semester. Graphic Design and Production L provides an opportunity to gain fundamentals of graphic communication including image capture, digital file, output, illustration, page layout, press operations, and job application. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP English Lit, AP English Language, AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Environmental Science, AP 2D, AP 3D, Painting, Guitar, Criminal Justice (Law 2), Team Sports, or a CVA or GVS on-line class. Advanced Graphic Output Processes L will continue to explore the principle of design and layout procedures as they relate to graphic design. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE Intro to Drafting Design instructs students in bridges, rockets, catapults, cars, cardboard furniture and more! Learn drafting practices by hand and using Autodesk AutoCAD to create multi-view drawings. This class meets every day for a single semester. Architectural Drawing and Design I introduces students to the basic terminology, concepts, and principles of Architectural Design with an emphasis on house design, floor plans, roof designs, elevations and foundations. This class meets every day for fall semester. Architectural Drawing and Design II emphasizes schedules, plumbing, heating and air, graphic presentations, plot / site plans, specifications, and building estimations. This class meets every day for spring semester. Survey of Engineering Graphics L develops skills in dimensioning, tolerancing, pictorials, sections, auxiliary views, and intersection and developments. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: Outdoor Ed, Culinary 1, Audio & Video 2, Intermediate Band, Intermediate Orchestra, and AVID 3. 3D Modeling and Analysis L is designed for students interested in mechanical drafting. Emphasis is placed on 3D drawings, wire frames, rendering, solid modeling and graphic presentations. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: Outdoor Ed, Culinary 1, Audio & Video 2, Intermediate Band, Intermediate Orchestra, and AVID 2 GOVERNMENT & PROTECTIVE SERVICES Intro to Law and Public Safety explores the history and development of law enforcement and the challenging field of criminal justice. Learn basics of criminal law, forensic crime investigations, and police station operations. This class meets every day for a single semester. Criminal Justice Essentials L emphasizes the structure of the American legal system while examining constitutional legal issues. Students will also attain skills for dealing with disasters and emergency situations. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. 6 Forensic Science and Criminal Investigations L provides students the opportunity to explore the basic processes and principles of forensic science as it relates to criminal cases. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP World History, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, Advanced Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Advanced Orchestra, Beginning Band, 1 st Aid Safety, Sport Medicine or a CVA or GVS on-line class. FAMIL AND CONSUMER SCIENCE Intro to Culinary Arts will teach you all about the fundamentals needed to work immediately in the food service industry. Want to become a chef, own a restaurant,or operate a catering company? This class will get you there. This class meets every day for a single semester. Culinary Arts 1 L includes the development of skills in food safety and sanitation, accident and injury prevention, kitchen basics, operating and maintaining commercial utensils, and preparation of commercial food. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: Intermediate Band, Intermediate Orchestra, Outdoor Ed, Weight Training, Survey of Engineering Graphics, 3D Modeling and Analysis, Audio & Video 2 and AVID 2 or Avid 3. Culinary Arts 2 enhances competencies by providing a broader exposure to the food and hospitality industry including controlling costs, food management functions and customer relations. This class meets every day for a single semester. BROADCAST/VIDEO PRODUCTIONS Audio & Video Tech 1 will develop skills in basic theory, practice, and operations of a television studio, the portable camera, and videotape editing. Students can learn how to operate a camera, edit using Adobe Premiere, and be a part of a working TV show either on camera or behind the scenes. This class meets every day for a single semester. Audio & Video Tech 2 L will enhance level-one skills by providing more in-depth and specialized experiences in video and film equipment operation. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Audio & Visual Tech 3 will enhance level-two skills by providing entry level occupational skills. This course will also assist in producing the live television show to be aired during LASSO. This class meets every day for a fall semester and is automatically paired with Audio & Visual Productions 4 spring semester. Audio & Video Tech 4 will enhance level-three skills by providing entry level occupational skills. This course will be the on-air talent for the live show as well as Unbelieve-A-Beef. This class meets every day for a single semester and is automatically paired with Audio & Visual Production LAB. Audio & Video Productions LAB will enhance level-three skills by providing entry level occupational skills. This course will be the on-air talent for the live show as well as Unbelieve-A-Beef. MARKETING Marketing Principles will introduce learners to marketing strategies, different meanings for different businesses, as well as teach you about the different approaches that affect marketing campaigns. Advanced Marketing L offers a comprehensive examination of the major components of a marketing strategy and its integration into an organization s business plan to understand marketing efficiency, effectiveness, and a return on the marketing investment within their organization. 7 Entrepreneurship L is the process of starting a business or other organization. The entrepreneur develops a business model, acquires the human and other required resources, and is fully responsible for its success or failure. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP World History, AP Psychology, AP Statistics, Forensics & Criminal Investigations, First Aid Safety, Team Sports, Beginning Band, Advanced Orchestra and CVA or GVS on-line class. NAVAL CAREER NJROTC Navy 1 teaches Navy leadership skills as applied to drills and unit organizational duties. An introduction to naval physical fitness, military drills with rifles and related health topics are covered. This class meets every day and is automatically paired with Navy 2 for the next semester. NJROTC Navy 2 includes the study of nautical plotting, rules and regulations and aids to navigation. Other topics covered include oceanography, military commands, the study of naval intelligence, and national security. This class meets every day for one semester and is automatically paired with Navy 3. NJROTC Navy 3 includes the study of geopolitics and opposing theories, along with the study of meteorology, astronomy, and naval electronics basic radar and sonar theory. This class meets every day for one semester and is automatically paired with Navy 4. NJROTC Navy 4 includes the study of navy career fields for officer and enlisted specialists, military justice and the international laws of the seas, as well as naval research and development. This class meets every day for one semester and is automatically paired with Navy 5. NJROTC Navy 5 includes the study of navy career fields for officer and enlisted specialists, military justice and the international laws of the seas, as well as naval research and development. This class only meets second semester. World Languages SPANISH Spanish 1 introduces the language and culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. The course will enable the student to attain a beginner s level proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This class meets every day for a single semester. Spanish 2 is designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on oral proficiency. Key vocabulary and grammar is acquired for limited personal communication. This class meets every day for a single semester. Spanish 3 Honors is designed to further develop the student s communication skills and cultural appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world. The course will provide additional study of grammar, vocabulary, translation, derivatives, mythology and Roman civilization. This class meets every day for a single semester. Latin 3 Honors is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to understand works of classical authors with emphasis on prose selections; along with the study of culture and history of the literary selections. This class meets every day for a single semester. Latin 4 Honors is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to increase oral and written fluency and to provide intensive study of the culture, geography, and history of Latin. This class meets every day for a single semester. The Fine Arts AP Art History L is a college level course exploring the history of images, objects, and buildings. Critical thinking and understanding of diverse historical and cultural contexts of architecture, sculpture, painting and other media are explored. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP English Literature, AP English Langauge, AP English Lit, AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Environmental Science, Guitar, Advanced Graphic Output Processes, Criminal Justice, Team Sports, or a CVA or GVS on-line. Intro to Visual Arts introduces the creation of art with drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. It covers the elements of art and principles of design, art history, and art criticism. This course is a prerequisite for all other visual art courses. This class meets every day for a single semester.

9 Vis Arts: Draw & Paint 1 introduces drawing and painting techniques and a variety of drawing/painting media. Emphasizes development of drawing/painting skills and utilizes problem solving skills to achieve desired results. This class meets every day for fall semester. Vis Arts: Draw and Paint 2 introduces advanced drawing and painting techniques and focuses on individual expression. Problem solving skills are challenged to achieve mastery of techniques and materials. This class meets every day for fall semester. Photography 1 investigates photography and its role in design. Design elements and principles in the production of artwork are emphasized. Proper use of equipment, vocabulary and technical terms are stressed. This class meets every day for fall semester. Ceramics & Pottery 1 introduces clay hand building and the potter s wheel. Evaluation & aesthetic judgment of student work is emphasized & personal expression in clay is encouraged. This class meets every day for spring semester. Vis Arts: Sculpture 1 introduces sculpture production techniques. Includes additive and subtractive modeling methods; explores traditional and non-traditional materials for sculptural work. This class meets every day for spring semester. AP Studio Art: Drawing / Painting I L requires submission of original works & images to be evaluated on quality, breadth, and concentration of a concept or idea. Different drawing media and approaches are emphasized. Both classes meet every other day for the entire school year; this is the automatic pairing. AP Studio Art: 2D Design L requires submission of original works & images to be evaluated on quality, breadth, and concentration of a concept or idea. 2-D art production, including photography, printmaking, and computer generated work, is emphasized. Possible pairings: AP English Lit, AP English Language, AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Environmental Science, Guitar, AP Studio Drawing, AP Art History, Sculpture 2, Graphic Design & Production Criminal Justice, AVID 4, and Team Sports. AP Studio Art: 3D Design/ Sculpture 2L requires submission of images to be evaluated on quality, breadth, and concentration of a concept or idea. Experiences using different 3-D design, media, and approaches are emphasized. Both classes meet every other day for the entire school year; this is the automatic pairing. Theater Arts Theater Arts Drama 1 serves as the prerequisite for all other Drama courses by giving an introduction to improvisation, acting, playwriting, directing, and technical theatre including set design / construction and costume and make-up design. This class meets every day for a single semester. Theater Arts Drama 2L enhances performance skills of Drama 1. It deals primarily with internal techniques of acting and lessons in performing monologues, auditioning, and improvisational techniques. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP English Lit, AP English Lang, AP US History, Sociology, AP Psychology, Beginning Orchestra, Intermediate Chorus, Advanced Band, Weight Training, CVA or GVS online & AVID 1. Theater Arts Drama 3L shapes performance skills of Drama 2. It develops advanced acting skills with a focus on character / scene study and monologue / scene work. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing. Possible pairings: AP English Lit, AP English Lang, AP US History, Sociology, AP Psychology, Beginning Orchestra, Advanced Chorus, Advanced Band, Weight Training, CVA or GVS online & AVID 1. Theater Arts Drama 4L perfects performance skills of Drama 3. Students will be introduced to audition and resume skills. This course offers opportunities to utilize scene work and audition techniques though performance. Meets every other day for the entire school year and you will have a choice on the pairing.

TECHNICAL THEATER Tech Theater 1 serves as the prerequisite course for other technical courses. It introduces technical considerations of play production; covers set construction, scene painting, lighting and settings, make-up and costumes. This class meets every day for fall semester and CAN be paired with Tech Theater 2 second semester. Tech Theater 2 enhances level-one skills and introduces aspects of drafting, creation of lighting, sound, properties, costumes and make-up design. This class meets every day for fall semester and CAN be paired with Tech Theater 3 second semester. Tech Theater 3 shapes level-two skills in drafting / set design and includes in-depth exploration of light operation, sound operation, stage management, costume construction, set development, make-up and production staff. This class meets every day for fall semester and CAN be paired with Tech Theater 4 second semester. Tech Theater 4 perfects level-three skills and offers opportunities to solve problems in supervising and managing all aspects of production; it explores technical directing and directing responsibilities. This class meets every day for fall semester and CAN be paired with Tech Theater 5 second semester. Tech Theater 5 allows for set improvisation and exploring new technical enhancements and directing/editing. This class meets every day for second semester only. BAND Beginning Band 1 is a band performance class that focuses on the basic fundamentals of tone production, music reading, and performance. This class can meet every day for fall semester and is automatically paired with Beginning Band 2 for spring semester. Intermediate Band or L is a performance class for instrumentalists with teacher recommendation to continue. Students can read music and have an understanding of individual and ensemble performance skills. This class can meet every day for the semester or it can meet every other day for the year. Just indicate on your form if you want it every day or every other day. If meeting as a for the fall semester it is Int. Band 1 automatically paired with Int. Band 2 for the spring. If meeting every other day, it is Int. Band 1A in the fall and Int. 1B for the spring. Possible pairings are: AP Physics 1, AP Calc AB, AP Cal BC, Intermediate Orchestra, Culinary 1, Audio & Video 2, Survey of Engineering, 3D Modeling & Analysis, Weight Training, and Outdoor Education. Advanced Band or L is an advanced class with teacher recommendation to continue. It is a performance class for instrumentalists that have solid training in performance fundamentals. This class can meet every day for the semester or it can meet every other day for the year. If meeting as a for the fall semester it is Adv. Band 1 (or Adv. Band 2) automatically paired with Adv. Band 2 (or Adv. Band 3) for the spring. If meeting every other day, it is Adv. Band 1A (or Adv. Band 2A) in the fall and Adv.Band 1B (or Adv. Band 2B) for the spring.
