1 Physical Education Teaching Excellence Award 2013 Nomination Package Purpose The PHE CANADA/WINTERGREEN Physical Education Teaching Excellence Award (PETE) Nominations are being sought for teachers that provide outstanding teaching performance at the elementary, middle and secondary levels, and who have an exceptional ability to motivate students to participate in a lifetime of physical activity. Number of Awards One (1) recipient is selected for each recognized provincial association. Of the provincial recipients, three (3) are selected for national honours. Who may Nominate? Anyone may nominate an individual for this award. This includes provincial/territorial physical and health education association members, colleagues, parents, students, or any individual wishing to highlight the exceptional service of a physical education teacher. What are the recognized provincial associations? The recognized provincial associations are those that are members of the Council of Provinces and Territories: Physical Education in British Columbia (PE-BC) Saskatchewan Physical Education Association (SPEA) Ophea (Ontario) Association of Physical Educators of Quebec (APEQ) Association des Professionnel(le)s en Éducation Physique (APEP, Nouveau-Brunswick) Physical Education Special Interest Council (PESIC) Prince Edward Island Physical Education Association (PEIPEA) Health and Education Council (HPEC, Alberta) Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association (MPETA) Fédération des éducateurs physique du Québec (FÉÉPEQ) The New Brunswick Physical Education Society (NBPES) Teachers Association of Physical & Health Education (TAPHE) Eligibility Requirements To be eligible to receive the PETE Award, a nominee must meet the following requirements: y Primary teaching responsibility (minimum 60%) in one or more grades from K-12; y Hold a Bachelor of Physical Education, or a Bachelor of Education or Kinesiology with a concentration in Physical Education, be fully certified by the province, and follow provincial curriculum using sound pedagogical principles; Nomination Package Physical Education Teaching Excellence Award i

2 y Minimum of five years teaching experience in physical education; y Full-time teaching contract, current at the time of nomination and selection; y The individual must not be a previous PETE Award recipient. Selection Criteria The applicant must be a teacher who: y Conducts a quality physical education program as reflected in PHE Canada s definition. y Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and fitness, enjoyment of activity, sportspersonship, and sensitivity to the needs of students. y Participates in professional development opportunities related to the teaching of physical education. It is intended that the nominee not only attend professional development opportunities but that they share their expertise with fellow teachers locally, regionally, or provincially. Selection Process y Completed nomination packages must be received by the PHE Canada national office by February 28, Nomination information can be found on the PHE Canada website at Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. y PHE Canada will review each nomination package for completeness and eligibility, and will forward nominations to the appropriate provincial/territorial association for their review and selection. y Provincial/territorial physical and health education associations will select a provincial/territorial PETE Award recipient. The recipient s name and nomination package will be sent back to PHE Canada. y From the provincial/territorial PETE Award recipients, the PHE Canada Awards Committee will select three national Physical Education Teaching Excellence Award recipients. Award Presentation and Benefits All PETE Award recipients receive: y PETE Award recognition plaque; y Recognition in the PHE Journal; y Recognition during the Award Ceremony and in the program of the next National Conference; y One-year enhanced professional PHE Canada membership.
