SBVC Counseling Office

Reasons why you got on probation 1. Failed to perform academically as expected 2. Failed to make the expected academic progress 3. Failed to perform academically as expected and to make the expected academic progress Differences between academic and progress probation Strategies for getting off probation Resources to help you stay a successful student

From Probation Level 1 Workshop I have learned Expected academic performance Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher Expected academic progress completion of over 50% of the courses enrolled Probation Level 2 Academic Probation Level 2 GPA is below 2.0 in each of the two consecutive semesters Progress Probation Level 2 Course completion rate is less than 50% in each of the two consecutive semesters The units of NP (non passing), I (incomplete) and/or W (withdrawal) are calculated as non passing/completion Probation Level 2 Combined (Academic and Progress Probation) A combination of the two patterns listed above in each of two consecutive semesters

Class registration hold Registration limited to a part time status (after the hold is removed) Prevention from graduation Prevention from transfer to a four year university

Complete SBVC online probation workshops Probation Workshop Level 1 & Probation Workshop Level 2 Complete SBVC Special Status Probation/ Dismissal Evaluation form Print out from Student Services Counseling Forms Meet with a counselor to create an educational plan and to remove the hold Register for classes

Follow the course sequences (from low to high) and start the courses at your academic levels Examples of the Course Sequence: Math Reading English Math 942 Read 920 English 914 Math 952 Read 950 English 015 Math 090 Read 015 English 101 Math 095 Read 100 English 102 Take a proper course load (per semester) Take 3 4 classes if you are a full time student Take 2 classes if you are working part time Take 1 class if you are working full time Check the learning outcome/grades at the end of the semester and adjust your course load for the following semester Utilize SBVC tutoring services Utilize SBVC counseling and/or student health services

Set aside enough hours for homework or course preparation 1 hour in class requires 2 hours course preparation outside of classroom Online classes require the same amount of time for class and coursework outside of classroom Take these factors into consideration when you try to decide how many classes you want to register for a semester Hours of employment/per week Hours needed to care for your child(ren) Hours needed to care for your family Hours needed to meet your social needs (boyfriend, girlfriend ) Keep balance between Quality (of your learning) and quantity (of the classes you are taking)
