3 TEKS Streamlining and STAAR As revisions are made to the TEKS, changes are subsequently made to the assessment program to maintain a strong, direct, and effective link between the TEKS and the statewide assessments. In April 2017, SBOE adopted streamlined TEKS for science with implementation set to begin in the school year. Please keep in mind that for any school year, the state assessments will always align to the curriculum in place across the state for that school year. November 2016 TEA STAAR SCIENCE UPDATE 3

4 Science TEKS Streamlining The streamlined science TEKS are available on the TEA website Science TEKS Streamlining SBOE Adopted, Not Yet Effective webpage until their scheduled effective date, August 27, Once effective, the TEKS will be incorporated in the Texas Administrative Code with Adopted 2017 in their title. Additional information and links to the adopted rules will be included in future communications through the science bulletin. The current TEKS are the required TEKS until the implementation of Streamlined TEKS.

11 Testing Requirements Based on federal requirements, students are to be tested in mathematics annually in grades 3-8 once in high school If a student is receiving accelerated instruction in mathematics, the student should take the assessment that best matches his/her instruction. 13 Testing Requirements Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in Algebra I should take the STAAR Algebra I assessment. The results of the STAAR Algebra I assessment can be used to fulfill high school graduation requirements. TEA discourages double testing these students (i.e., giving the student the Algebra I assessment and the grade 8 mathematics assessment). November 2016 TEA STAAR SCIENCE UPDATE 13

14 Testing Requirements Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in biology should take the STAAR biology assessment. The results of the STAAR biology assessment can be used to fulfill high school graduation requirements. 15 Testing Requirements Grade 8 students who are receiving instruction in a high school course that does not have a corresponding STAAR EOC assessment, for example IPC, do not have an assessment option that matches their instruction. These students are required to take the STAAR grade 8 science assessment to meet their federal testing requirement. 42 Individual Graduation Committees The Texas legislature has extended until 2019 the provision that allows students who have failed no more than two of the assessments required for graduation to be awarded diplomas by means of an Individual Graduation Committee. 42

43 TAKS The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) will no longer be administered. Former students who have not qualified to graduate because of one or more TAKS tests will have two pathways Students may make a qualifying score on an alternate assessment Students may graduate through a district decision 43
