2 Performance Coach Course Overview: The Australian Rugby Union Performance Coaching Course (Level 3) is designed to provide identified coaches operating within the Australian Rugby Union Performance Pathway with education, training and development specific to context in which they coach. The above Player Pathway diagram outlines the competitions and programs that the Australian Rugby Union are targeting through the Performance Coaching Course. These include: SuperRugby Pacific Nations Cup National Rugby Championship State Union Academy Premiership Rugby Australian and State u20s Australian Schoolboys Junior Gold Cup Course Structure: The course is comprised of two live in camps (pre-season and post-season), ten assessment tasks and ongoing personal development requirements. Camp 1: Narrabeen Academy of Sport, Sydney Thursday 28 th January 2016 to Sunday 31 st January 2016 Camp 2: Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra Thursday 27 th October 2016 to Sunday 30 th October 2016

3 Course Content: The course content is aimed at the holistic development of all coaches in attendance and consequentially is comprised of both rugby specific modules and coaching practice modules. Delivery will be varied and topics that will be covered can be seen in the table below: Rugby Specific Modules Performance analysis Attacking structures and shape Defensive structures and patterns Contact and tackle contest Individual skills coaching Restarts and set piece On field coach evaluation Talent Identification & Development Player welfare and education Performance Recovery Coaching Modules Skill Acquisition Athlete Learning Behaviours People management and effective communication Sport Performance Psychology and Motivation Management of High Performance Teams Leadership in sport Developing decision makers in sport Working with athletes from diverse backgrounds Self-reflection and continual professional development Course Delivery: Modules will be delivered by content experts comprising of professional coaching staff from the ARU and State Union Development Pathways and High Performance Units, professional coaches from other sports, expert technicians from leading sport institutions including the Australian Institute of Sport and leading academic experts from Australia s top Universities. Assessment Tasks: Successful completion of the Performance Coaching course will require participants to attend both live in camps and receive a pass mark on all ten assessment item tasks. These tasks include: Context Analysis & Annual Training Plan Law Exam University of Queensland Learning Module #1: Talent Identification and Selection University of Queensland Learning Module #2: Long Term Player Development Self-Assessment, Reflection and Action Plan Season Review and Board Report International Match Analysis Written Assignment Course Fees: A course levy of A$ (GST incl.) per participant either from successful applicants or their club/school is required by Friday 28 th November The ARU covers all costs of the course including flight transfers, accommodation, meals, facility hire fees, consultant and presenter fees, assessment and all course materials.

4 Nomination Details: Coaches wishing to attend the course must meet the following criteria: Currently SmartRugby compliant Possession of a current ARU Level 2 Coaching Accreditation or ARU approved RPL equivalency Recent completion of professional coach development (e.g. attended an Advance Coach Seminar, relevant tertiary education, formalised mentoring program) Currently coaching in the ARU Emerging Player, Performance or High Performance programs or competitions (see below) Currently identified as a coach of potential by State Union/Territory performance staff Potential to coach at the elite level, with an intent to keep coaching domestically for the next four year period Willingness to commit to continual professional development beyond completion of this course. Preparedness to assist in ARU and State Union Player Development Programs Commitment to fulfilling a coach mentor role for future Performance coaches

6 Selection Process: Please be advised there is no quota system for selection into the program. The selection process and timelines are as follows: 1. Coaches apply through their State or Territory Union Coaching Manager (cc: by 2 nd October State Unions prioritise and rank applications against the nominated selection criteria. A ranked list of coaches is submitted to the ARU Performance Coaching Course consultancy group 15 th October The ARU Performance Coaching Course consultancy group collates all state feedback and develops a national nomination list by 31 st October Interviews of potential course participants are conducted as required by 7th November In consultation with the State and Territory Unions the ARU Performance Coaching Course consultancy group selects the final candidates. Successful coaches are contacted no later than 14 th November Participants confirm their attendance through payment of the A$1795 course levy by 28 TH November *The Level 3 Consultancy group, made up of Australian Rugby Union Development Pathways and High Performance delegates. Performance Coach Course (Level 3) Accreditation: Performance Coaching Course (Level 3) accreditation will be achieved by participants who attend all face-to-face modules of both live in camps and successfully pass all required assessment tasks within the provided timeframes. Post Performance Coaching Course Development: Ongoing development opportunities may be made available to selected coaches post completion of their Performance Coaching Course (Level 3) accreditation.
