3 ABOUT EMILY CARR SECONDARY SCHOOL We are the home of the Emily Carr Thunderbirds.
4 EMILY CARR SECONDARY SCHOOL We are a semestered school: 4 courses from September to January 4 courses from February to June Each semester ends with an exam week and an exam review day
5 A TYPICAL DAY 5 periods per day 75 minutes each class Currently 2 lunches -75 minutes each School hours: 8:00 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.

7 S.W.A.T. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM AT E.C.S.S. S.W.A.T. is an acronym that stands for Students Working All Together S.W.A.T. is built on the belief that students can help other students succeed. At ECSS we have grade 11 and 12 mentors that will be supporting our entire grade 9 cohort. Each student in grade 9 student will have a mentor.
8 P.A.L.S. PEER ASSISTED LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAM Support program run by our Senior students, supervised by 2 teacher advisors All students can receive additional support from their peers for courses they are struggling in Currently, it runs on Mondays and Wednesdays during the lunch hour in the Learning Commons Presentation Room.

10 REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR YRDSB FAMILY OF SCHOOLS Students currently enrolled in grade 8 and attending one of our Family of Elementary Schools have already had a presentation and received instructions. All details are also posted on our Emily Carr S.S. website under the Guidance link.
11 REGISTRATION PROCESS FOR Wednesday, January 24, 2018 NON-YRDSB STUDENTS Pick up a registration package that will be available in the Main Office for Non- YRDSB students. Wednesday, February 14, 2018 Wednesday, February 28, 2018 Return registration package between these dates. Equal consideration is given to all students whose packages are returned within the dates listed above. At a Later Date: Non-YRDSB students/parents/guardians will be called in to attend a mandatory ECSS information session. PLEASE NOTE THAT EMILY CARR SECONDARY SCHOOL IS CLOSED TO TRANSFERS.

13 APPROXIMATE BOUNDARIES North -King/Vaughan Rd. West Hwy 50 East Pine Valley Dr. between King/Vaughan Rd. and Rutherford Rd. -Hwy 400 between Rutherford Rd. and Langstaff Rd. South Langstaff Rd. however there is a portion south between Pine Valley Dr. and Kipling that is not in the boundary

16 A MINIMUM OF 12 OPTIONAL CREDITS optional Credits (a.k.a. Electives) allow you to custom build your educational program depending on your chosen destination
17 THE GRADE 10 ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY TEST - OSSLT a diploma requirement administered in March or April of the grade 10 year accommodations, deferrals, and exemptions may be appropriate for some students if standard not met in first attempt, schools will provide remedial support; test is re-administered until student successfully completes the test or the Grade 12 Literacy Course
18 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A diploma requirement Encourages civic responsibility, promotes community values, and reinforces importance of volunteerism Complete 40 hours before graduation Can start the summer after grade 8 Requires prior approval Student s responsibility to keep record of activities For a list of eligible activities please refer to the YRDSB website at nvolvement or the Guidance link of the ECSS website for details and to print the form
19 CHOOSING COURSES FOR GRADE 9 Students will select courses in collaboration with their Parents/Guardians and the Elementary School support team. Consider your ability based on Grade 8 marks, the elementary teacher s recommendation, EQAO results, your work habits/learning skills, learning style, and your interests. Students should do an honest self-assessment, matching their ability with their interests and aptitudes. Remember that initial decisions made in grade 8 are not final pathway decisions. As interests, skills and aptitudes develop and mature, there will be many opportunities to re-chart your journey. There are many pathways to initial post-secondary destinations.
20 IPP-INDIVIDUAL PATHWAY PLANNER CREATING PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS As you move through school and in life, you will make many choices about your education and career plans. Beginning next year you will create an Individual Pathways Plan (IPP) and start recording: what you have learned about yourself opportunities available to you your goals plans to achieve your goals
21 COURSE SELECTION A grade 9 student at ECSS will take the following 6 compulsory subjects: English Mathematics Science Geography Physical Education French + 2 electives courses Please note: students are required to carefully select 2 Alternate elective courses as they may be used in the event there is a conflict with students timetables.
22 FRENCH AS AN OFFICIAL LANGUAGE French is a compulsory subject, mandatory from Grades 4 to 9. Students are encouraged to study French in Grades 10 to 12. French is one of Canada s official languages. French is recognized and valued as an integral component of Ontario s educational system. The vision of the French program in Ontario is that students will communicate and interact with growing confidence in French.

29 SWITCHING BETWEEN COURSE TYPES Applied Academic Crossover from 9 to 10 Grade 9 Grade 10 Academic Applied Applied Academic Crossover from one type to the other is possible for English, French, or Science
30 MATH IS DIFFERENT Switching from grade 9 Applied Math to grade 10 Academic Math is not possible. Both applied and academic Math pathways can lead to the most intense grade 12 university Math course, Calculus and Vectors, should you need it. The only difference is that the academic pathway is shorter by one course.
