1 Sixth Annual Australian Road Safety Awards Presented by Caltex COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AWARD PRESENTED BY CALTEX SCHOOL DRUG EDUCATION AND ROAD AWARE KEYS FOR LIFE PRE-DRIVER EDUCATION The Keys for Life program is an evidence based community road safety initiative delivered to year 10 students in schools and agencies. The program was created as a direct result by SDERA and the WA Government to mitigate accidents and fatalities involving pre and novice drivers. The program underpins a combination of sound teaching and learning methods and frameworks that have been shown through research to be effective in helping young people to adopt safer behaviours. In turn, students, parents and cares will develop the knowledge, attitudes and resilient capabilities to become safer, compliant and more responsible drivers SCHOOL PROGRAMS AWARD PRESENTED BY BOB JANE-T MARTS BLUE DATTO FOUNDATION LTD KEEPING SAFE PROGRAM Blue Datto Keeping Safe Program was founded by the Vassallo family after losing their 17-year-old son in a motor vehicle accident in July The Vassallo family believes by year 10, students should learn about increasing awareness, changing attitudes and modifying the behaviours on the roads as both passengers and drivers. The program aims for a mandatory behavioural Road Safety education program to be rolled out in schools and community groups by the year The program is facilitated by trained university students (as near peers - so the students can relate to the content differently than they do with their teachers) creating a further tier of road safety ambassadors. The interactive program also allows students to make safety pledges and Blue Datto s these to them at different milestones (ie. Birthdays) as a reinforcement of the program. INDIGENOUS ROAD SAFETY AWARD PRESENTED BY CALTEX ACE COLLEGES LICENSED AND ON THE ROAD This program was established in 2005 in response to the high level of driving offences and road fatalities experienced by Aboriginal and disadvantaged people living in the

2 Northern Rivers region of NSW. ACE Colleges worked closely with Roads and Maritime, Transport NSW, NSW Attorney General s Department and the Lismore Local Court to introduce Licensed and On the Road in rural communities, in particular Grafton, Armidale and Tamworth. The purpose of the program is to facilitate the attainment of learner licenses, P plates and full driver s licenses for Aboriginal people in the NSW North Coast region with outcomes including reduced contact with law enforcement agencies for driving related infringements, reduced incarceration rates and greater employment and education opportunities for Aboriginal people. INNOVATION AWARD PRESENTED BY LICENSYS THE ROYAL NORTH SHORE HOSPITAL P.A.R.T.Y PROGRAM SUPPORTED BY AAMI SKILLED DRIVERS This program is financially funded by AAMII Skilled drivers and administered by the Royal North Shore Hospital health and emergency service professionals. Each component of the program has been designed to ensure adolescents between the ages of gain a deeper understanding of the physical, social, psychological and financial consequences of risky road behaviours and its effect on the wider community. There are currently three program types which run across NSW. These cover Sydney metropolitan areas, youth who do not attend mainstream education institutions and regional/remote hospitals. LOCAL GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES AWARD PRESENTED BY TRANSPORT FOR NSW BAW BAW SHIRE COUNCIL BLACK SPOT PROGRAM The aim of the Baw Baw Shire Council Black Spot Program is not only to reduce the high rates of casualty crashes in the region but also on a state and national wide level. This program was developed under the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan as part of the shires commitment to reducing the number of crashes in black spot areas through educational and road improvement initiatives such as; better signs and messaging, culvert protection and intersection treatments. STATE GOVERNMENT INITIATES AWARD PRESENTED BY CALTEX NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT DRIVESAFE NT REMOTE DriveSafe NT Remote is a driver licensing program that recognises the complex multi-casual and interdependent barriers faced by indigenous and disadvantaged people. Low rate license participation is likely to contribute to economic and social limitations. Some of the most significant barriers include education, employment and healthcare services. For this reason, DriveSafe NT Remote is working collaboratively with the

3 Department of Education to ensure road safety is well integrated into the school education curriculum and to improve road safety outcomes in rural communities. Above all, this program is a strong advocate for providing a pathway for indigenous Territorians, to obtain a driver s license permit. ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD PRESENTED BY TAC QUEENSLAND TRAFFIC OFFENDERS PROGRAM (QTOP) QUEENSLAND TRAFFIC OFFENDERS PROGRAM (QTOP) This program is aimed to protect the community from road trauma by offering intervention to first and second time offenders charged a traffic related offence including; drink/ driving, speeding, inattention/mobiles, dangerous driving. The program provides education and rehabilitation services to remind the offender of their responsibility to know all road rules which apply to themselves and surrounding vehicles - in hope they reform their dangerous habits. The program also addresses behavioural issues like drug and alcohol abuse meaning it can contribute to an improvement in the greater health of the community. The program runs weekly in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and attendees must complete a mandatory three sessions to receive a certificate of completion. PANACHE DRIVER TRAINING PANACHE PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS IN SCHOOLS This program aims to foster dialogue amongst primary school children on the dangers for pedestrians and cyclists on or near the road, and how to identify these hazards. It does so by addressing primary school assemblies to deliver an interactive presentation that highlights their role as a pedestrian or cyclist; and the increasing concerns the advent of technology plays such as listening to music, talking on their mobile phone or playing mobile based applications. The goal is simple, to provide a trigger that gets primary school children to start to talk to their parents, siblings and other drivers about road safety, in as many schools as possible. COMMUNITY ROADSAFE MILDURA CALD DRIVING PROGRAM This program introduced road safety and licensing initiatives to migrant arrivals in the Mildura area. For these community s, mobility and licensing is a major challenge due to economic accessibility, language and communication barriers and limited conceptual understanding of Australian road rules. The CALD Driving Program is responsive to the sizable Sundanese, Afganee and Islander population by providing face to face classes on general road safety including; sharing the road, signs, the role of the police and licensing requirements. As part of the program, the participant must complete all four sessions to obtain 4 driving

4 lessons with an accredited driving instructor. The initiative entailed joint collaboration between Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council (SMECC), Roadsafe and VicPol. KENTISH COUNCIL SEE US SAFELY AND FACTOR THE TRACTOR This program aims to raise awareness amongst tourists visiting the North West Coast of Tasmania of the prevalence of road fatalities within the area. The dual program is geared towards school buses, motorcycles, learner drivers, horse riders and cyclists by highlighting their responsibilities as a motorist in a foreign environment. In any given year, over 300,000 interstate and international tourists visit the region each year. Based on this evidence, the overarching campaign is to reduce possible countermeasures, with a particular focus in the Latrobe and Kentish regions through broadcast media, direct mail campaigns and displays at community events. SHIRE OF CRANBROOK SPEED REDUCTION AND COMMUNITY SAFETY PROJECT The aim of this project is to reduce the fatality and injury rate of heavy vehicles using the CranbrookFrankland East Road in the town of Cranbrook, and generally improve the road safety strategy in the area. Along with MainRoads WA, Condition CV17 was introduced to help maintain this road in a trafficable condition and provide an alternate route to deter users - especially heavy vehicles speeding in a 60km zone. The key motivations are to restrict heavy vehicles from using the Cranbrook Frankland East Road, as a through route (main thoroughfare), and allow local pickups and deliveries only and; issue a permit from the Shire to use this road. NSW ROADS AND MARITIME SERVICES TOWARDS ZERO: TAFE NSW ROAD SAFETY PARTNERSHIP Towards zero is a campaign being delivered by the NSW Centre for Road Safety with a vision for a future free of deaths and serious injuries on our roads. This program provides practical road safety information sessions for TAFE students aged in western NSW. These students are the most at risk drivers on our roads and are also a group who depend heavily on their driver s license for work. In support with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and TAFE Western, Towards zero addresses the audience on the importance of prioritising road safety and the most common causes of fatalities through a safe system approach. These are; speed, fatigue, animal strikes, distraction and drug and alcohol use.

5 GK CREATIVE PTY LTD PLEASE SLOW DOWN CONSIDER OUR KIDS The Please Slow Down Consider our Kids road safety initiative was developed utilising the unique and widespread medium of wheelie bins as the hero. The movement aims to foster a consistent and recognisable line of communication between schools, local government and community bodies across Western Australia against speeding; and the presence of children in built up areas. Having distributed over 225,000 stickers since its conception in 2000, the initiative has since grown to involve additional products such as times tables posters, air fresheners and keyrings to support the range.
