1 Update... This semester is moving fast and our students, faculty and coaches have been achieving at new heights and have already accomplished so much. If you are new to the Laboratory Schools, we welcome you. Life in the Lab Schools is a newsletter we provide in the fall, spring, and summer to highlight achievements and keep parents informed of what is going on in both the Thomas Metcalf School and University High School. Student Achievements ACT Results The Illinois State Board of Education will no longer give the PARCC test to high school students, but will now give a college entrance exam, the SAT test, to all public high school juniors during the school year. The Laboratory Schools have elected at this time to continue providing the ACT, at no cost to students, which allows us to use longitudinal data gathered over the past ten years for comparison to assess our overall achievement of our students and gain insight into our instructional program. The vast majority, if not all, of colleges and universities accept both the ACT and SAT for admission purposes. Below are this past spring's results in comparison to the state's average ACT score in each subject as well as composite. Our students continue to perform at high levels on the ACT, one indicator of being prepared for college education. U-High State English Mathematics Reading Science Composite

2 PARCC Results The Laboratory Schools administer the PARCC test to Metcalf 3rd through 8th graders. Thomas Metcalf students continue to perform well above the state average on the PARCC test. For Engligh/Language Arts, the state's percentage of students who met or exceeded the expectations was 36.5%, compared to 70% of Metcalf meeting or exceeding expectations. For Math, the state's percentage of students who met or exceeded expectations was 31.6%, compared to 71% of Metcalf students meeting or exceeding expectations. Here are this past spring's results for Metcalf students. 3 Raptor Visitor Management System The Lab Schools are pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System January 2017 in Thomas Metcalf School and University High School in an effort to build on our campus safety efforts for students and faculty. The Raptor system will identify any visitors who appear on the registered sexual offender list to ensure they are not entering Laboratory School buildings. This system does not gather any additional data and does not connect to any other system such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. In addition, the Raptor system will better allow us to track Laboratory School visitors, contractors, and volunteers and provide a safer environment for our students and staff. Improving safety procedures while still maintaining the open environment enjoyed by the Laboratory Schools is of critical importance. We will be sending a separate letter to families regarding procedures as we get closer to the implementation date. Children's Author, Patricia Polacco, Spends a Day at Metcalf Made possible by Laboratory School parent Dr. Robert Henderson, Patricia Polacco came to visit Metcalf on October 3rd. Patricia Polacco has published over 120 children's books and has opened her life's stories up to everyone. Patricia took a full day and shared her Keeping Quilt program with the PreK-2nd graders. She enjoyed a luncheon with the faculty and staff. She shared her Meteor Book program with the 3rd-5th grades. And she wrapped up the day with the Bully Book program with the 6th-8th graders that was based on Ms. Polacco's experiences with her disability. The Orff Cats gave her a send off at the end of the day to show her our appreciation for her time with our students.

4 STEM Education in the Laboratory Schools STEM curriculum is based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. By 2020, the U.S. will demand 123 million highly-skilled workers, but there will only be 50 million qualified people to fill STEM roles according to a Burning Glass study. The Laboratory Schools are taking the initiative to help our students be prepared. According to the U.S. Department of Education, only 16 percent of high school students are interested in a STEM career and have proven a proficiency in mathematics. Of our graduates, 94 percent take four years of math and science, and our additional emphasis on STEM will keep our students at the forefront of preparation for the workforce. Coordination among K-12 schools, universities, businesses and entrepreneurs is the focus of BN Tech Town, an effort by the Bloomington-Normal Economic Development Council to make the Twin Cities a hub of technology business. The overall vision for Tech Town is to develop the McLean County area into a premiere technology ecosystem in downstate Illinois that allows the area to connect, attract and develop world-class opportunities, as well as talent. Country Financial Mentoring Program As part of the Bloomington-Normal Tech Town Iniatiative, Country Financial has provided many wonderful opportunities to University High School students. They have purchased equipment for U-High, sponsored special events, and have brought in employees to provide career direction speeches to our students. Country Financial's latest collaboration with U-High involves mentoring our AP Computer Science students. When faculty associate Cory Culbertson asked what students would be interested in the pilot mentoring program, a staggering 95% signed up. Of these students, a small group was selected for this pilot program, with some future opportunities in the works for the larger group. These students will work with employees of Country Financial that work in computer security, software development, and program architecture.

5 ISU Solar Car Team Visits Metcalf This month Metcalf was part of the ISU Solar Car Team's presentation to students in grades K-4. Metcalf teachers were inspired to establish this relationship last year because their goals relate directly to the work in science in fourth grade (and others). The Solar Car Team discussed and showed the importance of collaboration, using the design process, and modifying designs. In addition, their expertise fueled the students' desire to learn more about energy, namely solar. They even brought the solar car into Hayden Auditorium. In fourth grade, Metcalf teachers align the curriculum to the Next Generation Science Standards, aiming to learn about a variety of energy forms and how they are used. In addition, fourth graders and their teachers, Mrs Minton and Mrs Schumacher, visited the ISU Rec Center to see how they use energy. Both the students and teachers were excited to see the solar umbrellas that allow people to plug in their devices, as well as the different ways they conserve energy. ChromeBook Replacement! The introduction and use of Google Classroom with Chromebooks at Thomas Metcalf School has been a success in many ways for student learning. However, the original batch of Dell computers, purchased almost 2.5 years ago, have had repeated technical issues. Dell has tried various fixes for these Generation 1 units, but failures have continued with more and more staff and student time expended. After many, many months of negotiations with the campus Dell account executive, the University's TechZone computer department including Director David Greenfield, and Metcalf Technology Coordinator Isaac Akins, we are close to an exciting resolution. Dell has agreed to replace every single Generation 1 with a new Generation 3 unit! These new units will be manufactured and expected to be delivered to us right before Winter Break begins. All students (with the exception of 6th grade who already have the Generation 3 units) will need to turn in their machines before leaving for Winter Break. When they return in January we will have a plan for the new machines to be redistributed. This is a good time to remind your students, both now and in the future, that they should always treat their computers with care to prevent drops (something we have seen too often) and to always protect the screen when transporting. Thank you for your patience as we have worked through these issues, and to Dell for partnering with us.

6 Boys SoccerWins 1A State Championship! Congratulations to the U-High boys soccer team on winning the State Championship October 29th by beating Westchester (St. Joseph) 3-1. This outstanding team was led by head coach Jeremy Stanton and assistant coach Dan Gibler. On November 1st we held a pep rally to honor the soccer team. The team finished day one in third place. Led by juniors Dallas Koth and Tony Palumbo the team surged to a first place finish on the second round of play. This marks the 10th championship in school history and the first title since The guys shot 308 in the second round for 624 total. Dallas Koth tied for runner-up with a 74. Tony Palumbo and Dylan Panizo shot 76, Alex Kullman shot 82 and Ben Bazan and Ethan Huynh shot 83. This team was coached by Darrin York and Jeff Wollenweber. Way to go Pioneers! On October 18th, we held a pep rally to honor these six students, and Illinois State Representative Dan Brady made a surprise appreance to help congratulate these athletes!
