57 Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry Hindu University of America Namaste 1. I am seeking your expertise and help in auditing the attached Digital Educational Source material on Patanajli s Yoga sutra. 2. This document is functionally looked at as an Original Text Resource which has: - Multilingual text characters display (Devanagari Sanskrit and Roman script characters with diacritical marking) - Searchable text in Non-Roman script (Devanagari) - Searchable text in Uni-code / IPA diacritical marks - Generally secure as per the standard security of the Software, permitting the copy rights option /e-book options for ISBN numbered publication. - Web deliverable Sanskrit text with IPA notation in a browser friendly-user friendly way. -Usable offline - online courseware references for teaching. 2A. The focus here is just not limited to this one text that has been created; the text can be any other classic in any non-roman script- Brahma sutra, Sayana bhashya or Tirukkural! This is just a model. 2B In the current status of TITUS and Clay library projects, it is seen that the Devanagari Sanskrit and other Indic language texts are presented in the roman script; and at some points in the IPA notation / Kyoto convention / I-Trans and the like. This creates difficulty in appropriate referencing and documenting. The imagescan model does not help in the text string search! And that could be frustrating. I know the word is there in this text, but where? and how many times is it used in what contexts? How do I quote the text reference? that is the perennial difficulty of the writers of papers and articles, students and scholars in general. Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry sastry_bvk@hindu-university.edu 1
58 Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry Hindu University of America 3. The eventual goal is to bring out multilingual, text-searchable version of the Sanskrit source works and promote Sanskrit Research ( an of course research which can use the non-roman script documents related to Sacred traditions). One off shot of this could be the complete Veda with accent markings, in a searchable mode, with voice- all integrated for on line users. That is combining the Sacred language Tradition and language technology. I believe that the presentation of the source material should be matching the pace of the technology trends and society be it the good old hand scripting on palm leaves model which evolved through the phases of parchment paper, cloth, hand printing, type writing, machine printing, soft copy on user system to the online resource sitting in cyber space at some url! That is the way to keep the connection of the traditions with the current generations, based on the inspiration of the Maha-Narayana upanishadic statement reading < vedanta-vijnana suniscatartha> -The true and vigilant investigators of Vedas assess their understanding of Veda on a combined three fold platform of logic of revelation (Vedanta darshana), objective investigation ( Vijnana) and following it up with the experiential yoga. 4. The attached PDF file is version 1.0 of the Yoga sutras of Patanjali. This version has used some features of the software s, which would meet the basic requirements of the scholars. The update versions would bring in the advanced features of interactivity, notes and voice. The tools are already there. Now it is the time needed for putting together the pieces in a user friendly way and traditionally acceptable way. Of course the costs issue will always be there. Right now, it is a labor of love. Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry sastry_bvk@hindu-university.edu 2
59 Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry Hindu University of America 5. What I request from you is your critiquing observationsguidance on the following aspects. You may respond to the following questions in the normal mail mode: (For the tech-savvy users:- I have not moved to the use of Online form response submission at this point! Please excuse the inconvenience to hold you back on the response mode please). 1. Do you feel that this model of presenting the Sanskrit source works with multilingual feature meets some need of the users beyond the currently available models/ web sources? 2. What other features would you like to see in this model of Digital text presentation? 3. Would you be interested in participating this venture in any/all capacities of contributor, reviewer, Editor, User, Any other? 4. What would be your expectation as the next text in this model- (Grade your preference )Bhagavadgita, Panini s Ashtadhyayi, Manusmriti, Vedas, Upanishats, Commentaries of Upanishads, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Any other? Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry sastry_bvk@hindu-university.edu 3
60 Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry Hindu University of America 5. What is your preference for the additional (Indic -?) language to be seen along with Devanagari script and Roman alphabet character with diacritical marks? 6. Any other suggestions? Regards BVK Sastry Dr. B V Venkatakrishna Sastry sastry_bvk@hindu-university.edu 4
