March 2013 President s Message Scott Powell, HCTM President I hope you have had a good 2 nd semester and that you are in good health. I had the pleasure of welcoming over 250 teachers to our annual spring conference. I would like to personally thank all the teachers who attended, all the presenters who gave everyone something to think about and hopefully gave them some ideas to put into their practice. I would especially like to thank our special guest and keynote Mr. Dan Meyer who is always entertaining and inspires us all. I would also like to thank the HCTM board members and the many volunteers who helped us on that day. The folks at Sacred Hearts Academy are always so gracious and allow us to invade their space and, this year, enjoy their new cafeteria. It was just a really great day. We had a lot of positive comments, a lot of smiling faces and hopefully we made some new friends and connections. Call for Candidates The Elections chair of the Hawaii Council of Teachers of Mathematics is looking for dedicated teachers who would like to help promote the purposes of HCTM by running for a position on the HCTM Executive Board. Individuals interested in running for a position must be a current member of HCTM. Individuals may volunteer to run for any of the following elected positions: President Elementary director Vice-president Middle school director Vice president- elect/conference chair High school director Secretary Two-year college director Treasurer Four-year college director Membership director All interested parties should contact Brendan Brennan at brennanrps@gmail.com by March 20, The following amendment to Article II, Section I of the HCTM Constitution has been proposed. Proposed additions to the statement are noted in bold. Voting on the proposed change will take place in April. Article II, Section I EXECUTIVE BOARD (Current) The Executive Board shall consist of the officers of the Council, the Representative of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Editor of the newsletter, a student representative from a College of Education. The Editor and student representative will be appointed by the President with the approval of the Executive Board. Article II, Section I EXECUTIVE BOARD (Proposed amendment) The Executive Board shall consist of the officers of the Council, the Representative of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Editor of the newsletter, a student representative (s) from a College of Education, a Historian, and Webmaster. The Editor, student representative(s), Historian, and Webmaster will be appointed by the President with the approval of the Executive Board.

3 Annual Spring Conference Re-cap Deborah Kula, Conference Chair On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, 245 math teachers gathered to participate in a very special conference. Finding Common Ground: Standards, Technology & More was the theme for HCTM s annual conference this year hosted in conjunction with PiMATYC (Pacific Islands Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges) and Texas Instruments Professional Development - T 3 Teachers Teaching with Technology Regional Conference. Thirty-seven workshop presenters delivered 48 sessions on 21 st century learning, turning on your human calculator, Common Core Standards, TI-84, TI-73 and TI-Nspire technology, creating a learning community honoring culture and place, Singapore Math, origami and kite making, statistics, National Board Certification, kindergarten explorations of 10, math software, free math technology ideas, geometry (and more). In addition to the valuable workshop sessions, participants enjoyed the hospitality of Sacred Hearts Academy and the many exhibitors who displayed materials of interest to math teachers and contributed generously to door prizes. Many thanks to the presenters, participants and exhibitors for a wonderful Saturday experience. 4 Math Competitions Results of the MathCounts Chapter Competition MathCounts is a national math enrichment, club, and competition program for grades 6 8. Founding sponsors are the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Foundation. National sponsors are Raytheon Company, Art of Problem Solving, Next Thought, ConocoPhillips, Northrop Grumman Foundation, Texas Instruments Inc., ThinkFun Inc., 3M Foundation, National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics,and CNA Foundation. The title sponsor of the MathCounts National competition is the Raytheon Company. The MathCounts Honolulu Chapter Competition was held on Saturday, February 9 at Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama with 28 school teams (each with 4 students) and 124 individuals competing. The top six schools from this competition proceed to the state competition. They are: 1. Washington Middle School 2. Iolani 3. Punahou 4. Mililani Middle School 5. Highlands Intermediate 6. Kawananakoa Middle School At the end of the written portion of the competition, the following individuals took top honors: 1. Neo Ko Washington Middle School 2. Thomas Yang Washington Middle School 3. Alvin Yang Washington Middle School 4. Branden Tsuji-Jones - Washington Middle School 5. Vincent Tran Washington Middle School The MathCounts Hawaii State Competition will be held on Saturday, March 9 at Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama. Besides the Oahu schools listed above, the neighbor islands schools participating will be Waiakea Intermediate School (Big Island) and the winner of the Maui Chapter competition being held President s Day weekend. Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to the teams and individuals participating in the state competition. The top four individuals from the state competition will serve as the state team for the national competition that will be held May 10 in Washington D.C.
