1 Northrop High School Clubs and Activities: ACADEMIC TEAM The Indiana Association of High School Principals (IASP) sponsors state-wide academic competitions. The high school level Academic Super Bowl consists of several regional competitions that determine which teams go on to the state finals. The competition categories are English, fine arts, math, science, and social studies, with an additional interdisciplinary team comprised of students from the content area teams. The competition focuses on one theme each year, and the content area questions pertain to the selected theme. For 2018, the topic is WWI. Meeting Times: starting in January specific times TBD Dues/Costs: none Coaches: Mr. Rich Bailey (math and science) and Ms. Erin Smith (social studies, English, and fine arts) BIG ORANGE PRIDE MARCHING BAND Performs at all home football games and competes in the ISSMA competitive circuit. They are a 27-time ISSMA state finalist and a 6-time Bands of America Grand National finalist. Meeting Times: Tuesday 5 8 Thursday 5 8:00, and Friday at 4:30-6:30 for rehearsal or game (depending on football schedule) at the practice field in the parking lot. *There may be additional rehearsals during the summer months with participation in the Three Rivers Festival Parade. Dues/Costs: Dues are $325 each season Director: Mr. Rob Wilson BRUIN BUDDIES Upperclassmen who help with Freshman Orientation and assist our newest Bruins in getting off to a good start. Meeting Times: Meets occasionally when needed in A200 Dues/Costs: none Sponsor: Mr. Brad Ratliff CREATE CLUB Cook and bake a variety of foods while learning a variety of cooking methods. A fundraiser may be held in the fall to help cover the cost of supplies. Call-out meeting will be Monday, August 28, 2017, from 4:20 to 4:25 in E111. Meeting Times: Meets one Monday each month from 4:15 to 6:00 in E111 (additional meetings may be added as desired) Dues: $20 each semester Sponsor: Ms. Kia Miller

2 DANCE TEAM Our dance performance groups compete locally and throughout the state of Indiana. The Dance Team performs at school activities including basketball games, showcases, and the spring recital. We have a Junior-Varsity jazz team, Junior Varsity Hip-Hop team, Varsity Jazz Team, and Varsity Hip-Hop Team. Auditions are held in April. Meeting Times: Monday thru Friday during school and after school in the Dance Studio Dues: $150 - $250 annually Director: Mrs. Helmuth (other sponsors: Kyleen Helmuth, Sammi Jennings, Tremayne Trunbull, and Yusfa Ameir) FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES / BRUINS FOR CHRIST This group supports fellow athletes and students who just like sports in learning more about God through the avenue of sports. Meeting Times: Beginning in late September time and location TBD Dues: none Sponsors: Mr. Mike Cheviron, Mr. Jason Doerffler GAME CLUB This group will meet before school to play a variety of games, such as card games, board games, chess, etc. Meeting Times: Thursdays before school from 8:20 to 8:50 in D204, with additional yet-to-be-determined times after-school in C207 focusing on chess. Dues: none Sponsors: Mr. Aaron Smith and Ms. Sara Timmer GENDER/SEXUALITY ALLIANCE (GSA) Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia. Meeting Times: every Friday from 8:30 to 9:00 in the media center Dues: none Sponsor: Ms. Abby Harris-Correll GIRLS UNITED This club is about empowering women, serving the community, and connecting with peers. 3 INTERACT CLUB This is a Rotary sponsored service organization where students plan and implement service projects and fundraisers to benefit school, the community, and international organizations. There is a canstruction competition each spring where students design and build structures out of canned food at Glenbrook Mall in addition to the annual Operation Christmas Child project. Volunteer hours associated with Interact meet the requirements for volunteer hours for other organizations, such as National Honor Society. Meeting Times: Monday at 8:30AM in room D108 Dues: none Sponsors: Ms. Jeanine Tietz and Mr. Andrew Wyss JAZZ ENSEMBLE We offer one or two full jazz ensembles and one student led combo. Students are taught how to perform jazz music, as well as how to improvise in the jazz idiom. Students compete at area jazz festivals and perform in instrumental concerts. Students audition at the conclusion of the marching band season. Students wishing to be considered for the top jazz band must have been a member of the marching band. Meeting Times: Schedule will be given at beginning of season Dues: none Director: Mr. Rob Wilson NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY This organization recognizes outstanding scholars in leadership, character, and community service roles. Membership qualifications: must be a junior or senior with a 3.7 minimum GPA and complete required community service hours. Meeting Times: 8:30 am in Media Center on following dates 8/31, 9/28, 10/26, 11/30, 12/21, 1/25, 2/22, 3/23, 4/26, 5/24 Dues: $10.00 annually Sponsors: Ms. Kathy Neuenschwander, Ms. Dena. Wierks, Ms. Abby Harris- Correll, Ms. Nicole Hines NORTHROP MOVIE APPRECIATION SOCIETY Watch examples of classic and contemporary cinema and discuss the various aspects of each film after the screening. Meeting Times: Thursdays after school in A203 (may change dependent on student input). Dues: none Sponsor: Mr. Will Jacobs PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE We offer a percussion ensemble that performs throughout the winter and spring months after the marching band season ends. This ensemble is concert percussion as opposed to winter drumline. Meeting Times: Monday and Thursday 5 to 9 in H104 per schedule given to students Dues: $7/season to cover ISSMA entry fee Sponsors: Mr. Schneider and Mr. Wilson

4 POETRY CLUB This club provides a place where students can read, write, and share poetry in a comfortable atmosphere. Meeting Times: Friday mornings from 8:20 8:50 (may change dependent on student input). Dues: none Sponsors: Ms. Sarah Parrett and Mr. Eric Lorber SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Students work to provide an opportunity for students within the building to make safe and smart decisions regarding drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, etc. Meeting Times: TBD Dues: TBD Sponsors: TBD SHOW CHOIR Northrop has two show choirs that perform rock, pop, and vocal jazz with all types of choreography: Allure and Charisma. Both choirs are auditioned classes that meet daily in addition to some after school and evening rehearsals with some weekend and summer commitments. Allure is the only women s show choir in FWCS; this 60 voice ensemble competes and performs several times a year. Charisma is Northrop s mixed show choir. It is open to all grades, and performs forty or more times per year at various contests, Christmas shows, and private parties in the Fort Wayne area and across the Midwest. All members of Charisma are part of our Concert Choir as well. Auditions for show choirs are held in the spring for the following year s groups. Meeting Times: varies by season Fees for each group will vary from year to year depending on costuming Director: Mr. Tom Maupin SPEECH TEAM Speech and Debate offers a unique opportunity for students to individually represent Northrop High School at all levels leading up to an including Nationals. Students graduating from the program leave with the skills necessary to become expert public speakers and artfully deliver key presentations and information to employers and other speaking venues. Speech season begins in the fall and runs through March. Meeting Times: Tuesdays after school in D102 Dues: $10.00 Sponsors: Mr. Gene Harding, Mr. Joe Brooks asst. STUDENT COUNCIL Provides the opportunity for student leaders to create a sense of community within the school. Elections for student council representatives will be held at the beginning of the school year. 5 THEATRE / FINE ARTS (Troupe 7536) Directs, casts, rehearses plays and musicals which are performed during evening presentations at Northrop High School and at various Elementary and Middle schools during the day. Auditions are open to all students. Auditions may be held during the school day or after school. We are looking for students interested in costuming and makeup. This year s fall play is Heaven Can Wait. Meeting Times: will vary typically Monday thru Friday in the auditorium after school, 4:20 5:45 (we occasionally meet in H108) Dues: None! Directors: Mr. Tim Miller and Ms. Kia Miller THE DEN TAILGATING Members attend home sporting events to show the Bruin teams support and the club holds other Bruin events throughout the seasons (such as cook-outs and theme days).
