1 SHALER AREA HIGH SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTION BOOK HIGHLIGHTS SY Prepared by: Thomas M. Misko High School Assistant Principal From Previous Year CDB Adjusted course pre-requisites throughout Description Book based on new grading scale implemented during school year o Prior pre-requisites: 64%, 72%, 82%, 89% o New pre-requisites: 60%, 70%, 80%, 89% Changes per department: English Language Arts Due to low enrollment over consecutive years the following courses were eliminated from the Description Book: o Media Literacy o Public Speaking o Advanced Public Speaking o Word Power Music Jazz Ensemble 1, Women s Chorus, Chamber Choir, and Wind Ensemble will be weighted as an honors course. Ex. Honors Jazz Ensemble 1, etc. Elimination of semester course, Music Appreciation, due to low enrollment over consecutive years Addition of semester course, Percussion Ensemble. o Percussion Ensemble is a semester long course designed for students who have a desire to learn and play percussion instruments. This course will include guidance and direction in developing techniques of performance, notation, reading, and musicality using a wide variety of percussion instruments and musical styles. Students will develop techniques for playing all percussion instruments in a variety of musical settings including marching percussion, concert percussion, world drumming, and small ensembles. Students enrolled in Percussion Ensemble are required to participate in all performances during and after school.
2 Science Addition of year-long course, Conceptual Biology (Keystone ) o Conceptual Biology is an introductory biology course for high school students. The curriculum focuses on six major units: Introduction to biology, biochemistry, cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, and ecology. Laboratory investigation, projects, discussions, and web-based activities are strategies used to develop these concepts. This course is a single period biology course that focuses on the core concepts listed. Conceptual Biology is appropriate for college bound students but is not sufficient for students intending to pursue degrees in engineering, science, or the allied health professions. Art Addition of semester course, Anime & Illustration o Anime & Illustration will explore the evolution and impact of Cartoons on our culture. Students will learn to draw characters using multiple methods of illustration and dynamic composition. Characters will be created on paper and through digital formats. Anime & Illustration will compare and contrast cartoon art from the past to current Anime graphic novels today.
