3 Kentucky Business Education Association Annual Report Purpose The Kentucky Business Education Association is affiliated with the National Business Education Association and Southern Business Education Association. The Association is dedicated to... Promoting business education in the commonwealth; Providing opportunities for educators in the commonwealth to share educational experiences; Keeping membership informed of events affecting business education; Providing beneficial workshops and programs for teachers at the Kentucky Association of Career and Technical Education s yearly conference Publishing a newsletter twice yearly; Working with Kentucky FBLA and Kentucky PBL to provide assistance as needed; Representing the state at the regional and national levels; and Providing opportunities for professional growth. Governing Board The governing board of the Association is the Executive Board. The Executive Board is composed of the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, and six regional representatives. The Executive Board also includes as ex-officio members the Association s Journal, Newsletter, and Web Editors, the state Kentucky Business Education Association Annual Report 2

4 representative to NBEA/SBEA, the FBLA and PBL state advisers, the Association s immediate past president, and membership chairperson. Ex-officio, non-voting, members are the Association s Adviser, Conference Awards Chairperson, a secondary representative, and a post-secondary representative. The executive board meets three times a year to facilitate the business of the Association. Communication among board members during the year provides opportunities for additional initiatives to be expedited. 7 KBEA Professional Membership The Kentucky Business Education Association s membership year is from July 1 through June 30. For , there were 195 members. Currently, dues are $15.00 for professional and student members and $ for a lifetime membership. In addition to local membership, KBEA encourages its members to become involved in regional and national organizations. KBEA provides financial support to the president and president-elect to attend the NBEA and SBEA conferences. KBEA Journal The Association publishes the Kentucky Business Education Association Journal once a year. The Journal is included as a part of the KBEA membership package. The Journal is a refereed publication; a panel of referees determine the desirability of each article for publication. The Journal is published in the spring and mailed to all members. A few of the articles that are contained in the 2010 edition include... Methods to Provide International Marketing Coverage in Secondary and Lower Division Postsecondary Business Courses A Study of Differences Between Students and Faculty on the Essential Characteristics of Effective Teachers Business Education s Greatest Challenge The Perceived Economic Effects to Small Kentucky Cities with Broadband Internet Authors are encouraged to submit original manuscripts on topics that would be of interest to Kentucky business educators. 8 KBEA Website and Newsletter The KBEA website ( continues to provide members and interested individuals with the latest information about KBEA, SBEA, and NBEA. Additionally, the website serves as a location for various documents used by business educators across the state. The KBEA Newsletter is published in the spring and fall of each year and is sent via to all current members. CTE Annual Summer Conference The Kentucky Business Education Association, along with other professional associations, worked with the Kentucky Association of Career and Technical Education to implement the 2010 Summer Learning Program. The conference was held July in Louisville at The Galt House Hotel and was attended by more than 1,400 educators and 82 exhibitors from across the Commonwealth. Business education attendees totaled 321. The KBEA Executive Board Meeting was held Sunday, July 18, 2010, at 7:00 pm to prepare for its annual board meeting and awards brunch. The theme for the conference was Focus on the Future: Technology, Transitions, and Teamwork. Mr. Murray Banks was the keynote speaker. His topic was Technology, Transitions, and Teamwork: Keeping Our Focus on Students in Changing Times. The KBEA Annual Meeting and Brunch was held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, and the KBEA Executive Board members were installed. The KBEA Executive Board members are listed on pages 3-5. KBEA President, Kelly Holley, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The KBEA Awards brunch had approximately 150 business educators in attendance. 9 The following awards were given at the brunch: Outstanding Secondary Teacher: Ms. Mary Ann Hext, Greenwood High School KBEA Honorary Life Member: Ms. Janet Atwood, retired from Casey County Area Technology Center Student Organizations The Kentucky Business Education Association actively supports the Kentucky chapters of Future Business Leaders of America and Phi Beta Lambda. Last year, there were 8,000 FBLA and PBL members. Many KBEA members serve as active advisers to local chapters. Many members increased their professional development by attending FBLA/PBL sponsored workshops throughout the year. Kentucky FBLA attended the 2010 National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN. During the conference, members and advisers from around the country participated in state meetings, workshops, voting sessions, awards of excellence sessions, and social activities. Kentucky FBLA was proudly represented by more than 300 members, advisers, and guests. Kim-Mai Le from DuPont Manual High School campaigned tirelessly with her team to win her bid for National Secretary. Business Education in Kentucky Business Education in Kentucky has been affected by several new initiatives at the state level. These include... Financial Literacy for Math now counts as a 4 th math option. A pilot program was ongoing throughout the school year with several schools participating in this pilot. Curriculum was developed for this course. Each department chair present at the summer conference received a CD with this curriculum to take back to their schools. New Entreprenuership curriculum was developed to be used in any business course and distributed at summer conference. Kentucky Business Education Association Annual Report 9

11 Standards work is set to begin on Web Design and Multimedia skill standards in Practical Living/Career Studies Program Review is in the pilot stage for to be fully implemented and a part of accountability in There is now a College and Career Readiness promotional package for accounting including a DVD and administrators brochure. Without a doubt the school year will continue to see changes and improvements to Business Education in Kentucky.
