Prakash Javadekar Inaugurates Plastic Waste Free Kolkata drive at KV No. 2, Salt Lake Kolkata, Oct 2: Hon ble Union Minister for Human Resource Development Sh. Prakash Javadekar appealed the school students to keep their cities and towns clean by committing themselves to regular cleaning of their respective vicinities of plastic refuge while coming to and returning from their schools. This has become mandatory to do away with the evil of plastic waste which has become a major hindrance in clean India drive, Sh. Javadekar said in Kolkata. He was speaking at a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan event organised to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2, Salt Lake. Sh. Javadekar on this occasion launched the Plastic Waste Free Kolkata drive by leading a team of school students and cleaning the IC Block school vicinity at Salt Lake. He pointed out that only the nine thousand tons of plastic waste is collected and sent away for treatment out of the 15 thousand tone produced daily in India. This imbalance leads to a daily addition of a load of six thousand tones untreated plastic waste, which is not biodegradable, on our civic systems causing 6

The only way out, therefore, is rendering of a helping hand by all citizens to our civic bodies who are struggling hard to manage the additional load of e-waste and bio-medical waste that are highly hazardous, he said. Celebration of Swachh Bharat Mission in Kendriya Vidyalayas Carrying forward the Swachhata initiative, students of different Kendriya Vidyalayas along with their mentors took part in various activities specific to the age group in and around the school campus. Students were guided to maintain cleanliness and practice it at their homes, schools and neighbourhood. The activities carried out are as detailed below: a) CLEANATHON/RALLIES: Students marched out in the vicinity of their Vidyalayas to educate people on the importance of cleanliness with Slogans/Placards to practice simple changes that lead to keeping the environment clean. b) HUMAN CHAIN: Students formed a human chain to pass on the message of SWACHH BHARAT with the help of Slogans, Posters, and Placards etc. c) VIDEOS: Swachhata related inspirational videos were screened to sensitize about the initiative and to incorporate healthy habits from childhood itself. d) COMMUNITY SANITATION: Teachers and Students took up the work of cleaning the litter at the Community places to set an example for others. e) MEDICAL SESSIONS: Medical sessions on Swachhata and personal hygiene were taken up by the school Doctor and nurse. f) PUPPET SHOW: Message of Swachhata through Puppet show was also organised in some KVs, especially for young students. g) SLOGAN WRITING AND POSTER MAKING: The students took initiative and engaged themselves in expressing their ideas with zeal and interest through colour posters and slogans. h) SKIT: Students enacted short Plays/ Skits on the need for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. i) Debate: Various activities like debates, declamations etc. were organised to spread the message of the Swachh Bharat Mission. 7

Santosh Kumar Mall presented the major highlights of various sports activities in the ambit of KVS and said the Olympic Medal winner and Central Minister Sh.

Additional Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy Smt. Rina Ray had to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest, but due to some unavoidable reasons she was unable to attend the Programme.

On this occasion KVS Commissioner announced that KVS is planning to sign a MoU with Sports Authority of India so that we can use the existing infrastructure of SAI for the benefit of KV Students and

The five-day long Sports Meet concluded with colourful cultural programme and prize distribution at Thyagraj Sports Complex in New Delhi on 30 th September.
